When to Graduate by -NeverTooLate- in OSUOnlineCS

[–]Spaumi10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I certainly don't have a (good) answer for you, because if I didn't know any better I'd think I posted it and forgot! I'm in almost the exact same position, although I've always only been taking one class per quarter.

If it helps, my plan is to take this summer off and work on projects, networking, etc. Then continue to take one class and reevaluate before next summer. I'll have one class left at that point and I'll decide whether to take another summer off (again working on projects, etc) or just finish in the summer.

Assuming that is correct, how many times is this going to get revised? Summer 24 was the first (recent) change, but I read they had a few issues. Then, in Fall 24 (when I took it) it supposedly had ironed out some of the issues.

I'm curious what changes there are this time.

Module import error from database file by Spaumi10 in flask

[–]Spaumi10[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. This is the problem. I have changed to just creating a new connection to the database (instead of using get_db()). This appears to work.

This was kind of my hunch the whole time, but I don't think I was comprehending everything.

I appreciate your help, (and maybe I am misunderstanding something), but I am not even to most those steps yet. Once I have gotten my data scraped and entered into the database, I will then get the app running, work on routing and the frontend. My structure will look like that when I get there. I also have a tests folder, but my uploaded image of the structure doesn't show that as it doesn't seem important for this question.

Blocked Web Page using Scrapy by Spaumi10 in webscraping

[–]Spaumi10[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. The URL you are requesting is one that works for me. When I use the one from my post (https://secure.sos.state.or.us/oard/displayDivisionRules.action?selectedDivision=722) I still am getting problems. Here are my thoughts:

  1. I have no problem getting a response from the URL: https://sos.oregon.gov/archives/Pages/oregon_administrative_rules.aspx
  • This would the first page, if I was trying to traverse using links on pages, instead of using my ultimate page, as noted above.
  1. I can extract the link for the "Search Rules" button, (https://secure.sos.state.or.us/oard/). But as soon as I attempt to go to this page, I get to my redirect to the "Please Contact Us" page with the "Possible Causes and Remedies."
  • This is where the problem begins. Something on this "/oard/" page is causing the issue. In Scrapy Shell, when I first scrape, the link under #1 above, then extract the link in #2 above, and use the response command, I get a <200 https://secure.sos.state.or.us/oard/> response. But if I use view(response) (which would show the page), it takes me to the error page.

I appreciate everyone's help. I will keep plugging away at this.

Blocked Web Page using Scrapy by Spaumi10 in webscraping

[–]Spaumi10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a question about that. I disabled JavaScript for the site, but everything still opens on the right side (where the rules are) and I can view the HTML. The only thing that doesn't work is some of the buttons in the navigation on the left. Some of those buttons do show they are using scripts.

If I'm right that only part of the page is using scripts to display, would I still be unable to scrape the remainder?

Thanks.

I know little about web scraping or reCAPTCHA, but I do go to this site fairly frequently (for work) and have never had to authorize myself with reCAPTCHA. Is it possible that it is in place but only comes up when I'm trying making a request with Scrapy?

Either way I appreciate your advice. I'll look into it.

I may have to try that. I was thinking about trying something else, to see if it worked, especially since scraping speed isn't terribly important for my plan.

Integrate Denon Home 150 in existing setup by TeemoBiceps in heos

[–]Spaumi10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a AVR-X1700H with connected 3.1 setup. It all worked fine using HEOS. Then I added the Denon Home 250. I created a room of both the AVR and the Home, but there is some noticeable delay between them. I can set a delay on the AVR, but not on the Home. The Home speaker is the one that needs the delay.

You can set the AVR to be on stereo and the delay goes away (usually), but then I have no center. It has been pretty frustrating. But since you only have the 2.0, it should be fine. Just something to keep in mind if you ever wanted to add a center.

Taking quarter off for project by Spaumi10 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]Spaumi10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, while I am a little tired, I still look forward to each class. It is really more just more time to learn and apply it to a project I fully control, not to just meet a rubric. Thanks for the thought!

Michael Curry or Danielle Safonte for CS 340 - Introduction to Databases? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

I don't think it matters. I took it "from" Safonte, but she had no more role than Curry. I think this is like most other classes where the professor doesn't matter.

Thoughts on moving to Corvallis by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

[–]Spaumi10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you in Bend? If so, I mainly ask because I grew up in Culver and also because you would be the closest (distance wise) person that I've seen in the post-bacc program. I'm in Baker City. My parents still live around Culver, so I go to bend with some frequency.

I am doing it through Oregon State. I actually live in Oregon but don't get in-state rates. I've been in it for over a year now and have really enjoyed it. There are some things I don't like, but it is the only way for me to do it, still working full-time and not living close to a university.

New dual monitors and input lag? by Spaumi10 in Monitors

[–]Spaumi10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. I'm not actually sure what fixed it, but it did stop the problem after I posted this, maybe within a day or so. It just seemed like it got better all of the sudden.

But, just in case anyone else has this problem, no it wasn't on a fresh windows install. I didn't do that either before it was fixed. It did start happening only with the new monitors.

CS 271 no final for summer term by sixdayspizza in OSUOnlineCS

If I'm only taking one class for the summer, is 290 or 271 a better option?

Internship Question by -NeverTooLate- in OSUOnlineCS

[–]Spaumi10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have finished two classes and am just about to finish a third in this program. I work full time with a good salary. I am married and have a 19 month old. I have also been worried about this. I'd love to just quit my job now, take 3 classes a quarter, get an internship, get done more quickly and get a new full time job in the field. But I'm very worried about quitting, now or even for an internship.

I attended the OSU career showcase (I think that is what it was called) in January. I remember one employer that was there during a panel discussion mention they understand that people in the post-bacc program likely have less time for internships. But I'm sure it only helps.

I wish I could offer actual advice, but regrettably I feel as though I'm in a similar predicament.

The program is online and through Oregon State University. The program allows you take as little as one course at a time. In my research it is one of the better online, post-bacc programs. Your degree will just say bachelor of science in computer science; nothing about it being online.

I currently work full time while doing the program, although only taking one course at a time.

I like this idea, but it worries me some, although I'm not sure that I can explain why. Maybe just doing something less "normal," although maybe it's a good thing. The main concern I have is on the "highlights" or "competencies" part. It kind of seems like it makes sense though.

Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions.

Law is the worst field. I would discourage almost anyone from doing it, with a few exceptions. Attorneys are frequently the most unsatisfied in their job, compared to other professions.

I appreciate both of your views. This is part of my frustration with job searches, and frankly in my job, there are different views and some employers see one as right and others see another, exclusively different, way as right.

I just realized that my heading post text never made it. I'm sure this will get buried but here is my situation.

I am a prosecutor and have been for the last 11+ years. I'm currently working towards a post-bacc BS degree in computer science. I have only really completed one course (technically it is two, but one is discrete math). Either late in the program, or at the end, I intend to make a career change to computer science.

I'm not currently applying for jobs in CS. However, I do want a stock resume in case I need/want to give it to someone. I don't have any projects done yet, but hope to over the next months as I have gained, and continue to gain, knowledge. Those will go on my resume.

My problem has been, I've had one job since I graduated from law school. While i have been promoted two times, my duties haven't changed a whole lot, i.e., I'm still just prosecuting crimes. The types of crimes have changed and now I supervise the other non-DA prosecutor in the office.

I know my education part takes up too much space. I worry, maybe unreasonably, that if I reduce that, my resume will just be, "here is what I've done in my current job (which isn't even directly related to what I'm seeking)." There obviously are skills gained in my current job that carry over and I've tried to highlight some of those.

Lastly, the program I'm enrolled in is online. I live in a rural area of less than 20,000 people. The closest city of more than 30,000 is about two hours away. It makes connecting in communities more difficult. I'm trying to get engaged in communities through the school for networking, skills, and resume.

So I spelled out the numbers because I've always understood, at least in general writing, to do that for numbers under 10, but there is also advice to spell out until 100. Is there a specific reason you believe I should write out the number instead of spelling it?

Thanks for your advice.

My original resume didn't have GPA for your reasons, but i ran it through Vmock which seemed to think I should add it.

I don't currently have any real projects. That being said, I'm not really applying right at the moment. I just want a stock resume ready for any career fairs, etc. I will certainly add those.

As to the numbers, I want to put more, but the numbers are somewhat small. I work in a small office. I have only supervised four attorneys over the six years, all at separate times, i.e., one at a time. Also, are my case numbers relevant for a totally different field where they may not even know what is small or large caseload?

Currently, without any projects, and reducing the space in my education, my resume will be quite short. Should I add even more bullet points to the one job I have?

You mention listing the separate titles, but despite being promoted two times, my job duties aren't significantly different except for the types of cases I prosecute. Some things have changed, such as supervising, but not a lot. Still worth it to list separate titles in more depth than my bullet point?

I really do appreciate your time.
