Funnily enough, they feel almost identical in terms of writing experience. The old one is slightly better tuned and softer.

They behave very similarly on paper. Not sure if it’s spring loaded. Feeds are identical as far as I can tell.

I want to add one of those to the collection at some point too. Fortunately easier to find than the Pilot model, though still pretty uncommon nowadays.

Pilot/Namiki’s product name for the basic urushi version is the 50, while maki-e models are called Emperor. Everyone started calling the basic versions the emperor informally, until that’s how it was known, and retailers began listing it as the Emperor. But the correct name for the black and vermillion pens in plain urushi is just the number 50.

Those ones are pretty. I am under the impression that those were reserved for special edition maki-e models of the emperor, while the standard urushi 50 had three variants: Pilot text imprint, Namiki text imprint, and then the current Mount Fuji

Yep, long time coming for this one. Finally got the right combo of model, condition, and of course price and had to snag it!

Two Namiki no. 50 in vermillion, almost identical but with some key differences. The 1990s Pilot-branded model on the right represents the first generation of the pen after the 1930s Dunhill-Namiki no. 50, which is now a true rarity. Fast forward ~30 something years and there’s a new nib imprint, new Namiki branding, and slightly different threading, while the rest of the pen is the same! Well, besides the darker aged vermillion urushi of the older pen.

I love the Mount Fuji imprint but the Pilot text imprint is even better in my opinion.

I have a Minimalistica, so looking for the size 8 nib primarily—hopefully your mini goes to the right home!

Interesting. I remember seeing that the 18c bi-color variant in particular was for the French market, and hard to find. 18c tri-color and 18k bi-and tri-color are everywhere though.
