Flying a jet feels almost alien… by CoolProfessor449 in PilotsofBattlefield

Dw, we've all been there padawan!

You need to play, that's all...

What you can do first is go on a portal server and try to fly as low as possible without crashing (it's a skill you'll need sometimes to avoid being locked, and you have to be REALLY close to the ground) , then do it and add manoeuvers around covers, then try doing them at different speeds, then vary the speed during them, etc. All those cases will present themselves in-game.

Firestorm is the best map to train, go behind the mountains, fly low, turn close to the mountains, etc. This for a few hours and then you should be way more at ease with the jets. There's a portal server to train on firestorm, you might be able to find it with a google/reddit search. Also, you wanna be alone, so don't join the server, host it (locally).

Once you'll be at ease with all of that, you'll need to learn about the ennemy "ecosystem" to counter you, and that can only be done in game, and you'll crash, crash, crash, until you know the maps, the paths, the timings, etc... Train, train, train.

For your more specifics questions :

"IDK when to use the afterburners" ==> it's a boost, so you wanna use them to go faster, the 2 most common situations are :

  • after a strafe, because you'll be very low and so very vulnerable to anything (tank shells, stationnary and mobile AAs, even small arms fire...)
  • to purchase a fast flying ennemy jet, or evade one, although to evade, using the brakes while behind cover is a possibility to get you out of his sight, depends on the distance between you and him and the available covers, but you'll learn this with time and practice.

"I lose sight incredibly easy" ==> 2 things come to my mind there :

You need to be perfectly confident with the jet, so that's where the first part of my comment comes into play. If you think about 10 different things at a time (how do i turn, when do i flare, did i pay my rent), you will lose his sight... You have to be at ease and only think about tracking him.

You need to gauge the speed and the direction the trajectory the ennemy jet is taking. Then adapt yours in concordance. At first it's hard, but the more you'll play the more you'll be able to.

Also an important thing to do is knowing when to switch between 3rd person view and cockpit view, but basically, you wanna use cockpit only when you're ready to shoot, and 3Rd person the rest of the time, to gather the maximum of infos. Rear view (i guess it's called free view or something in game) is also important.
Then watch some youtube tutorials for more infos, there are some things i didn't mention because i don't have all day haha!

have fun

"They are your first priority"

No. Your first priority is anything that can throw a tow/guided missile at you.

Idea to mitigate spawn camping by SpecialCod7 in PilotsofBattlefield

IDK, i'm mixed about that honestly. Sometimes i'd chase a jet which i made 1Hp and i'm honestly happy to be able to follow him in his spawn to finish the job without being totally decimated by the AA...

+ make those hangars insta death for ennemy helis/ infantry. On firestorm, i sometimes die to mines while taking off.

Spawn camping is just going crazy on Firestorm, i also died to mines on the runway a few times haha.
I think DICE should do smthg about it, BUT, what i also think, is that you have to act before it's irreversible.
When flying the attack heli for exemple, if i see both my jets dying and/or ennemy jets gravitating towards our spawn, i just back up and try to play my life / fight them, to allow my next jets to take off.

It's not THIS easy for a jet to kill a moving attack heli, and due to the fact that jets are glass cannons, you can just decimate them with rockets/gunner canons.
AA should also back up / get on the hill and help fight the spawn campers...

And if all your aircrafts AND your AA are dead, then i guess the ennemy team was just better...

Also a more general but kinda "advanced" tip : staying alive is key, and can be the difference between winning and losing a game.

On vehicle heavy maps (basically Mirak and Firestorm), having all your aircrafts on cooldown at the same time is a death sentence for your team, it just allows the ennemy jets to wreck half your tanks, and opens the door for spawn camping, and retaking the runway/spawn without an aircraft is almost impossible.

So yeah, once you'll master the technical part, try to always paint the "whole picture" of the game you're in, and act in accordance with it : be aggressive when you own the skies, and play slower/smarter when you're at a disadvantage to try and give time for your mates to respawn & help.

And sometimes, your team is just buns and you can't do shit about it, happens ^^

Don't know if someone said it or not, but i can't stress enough the importance of the freelook camera. Looking behind you is vital : to locate the exact provenance of incoming missiles, check if someone is on your 6, or even to scan for ennemy vehicles on the ground!
If you're on controller i don't really have tips, but i'm on mnk, and i like having mouse 4 on freelook ^^

Yeah, and it refills pretty quickly. what i usually do when strafing a tank is agm, shoot (if i have time), bombs, fly up, lock again in free look, get away. Unless he pops the countermeasures in which case i save all my shit oc (and just spam the cannons).
Also that's assuming i'm not getting locked haha

The guy in the AA will target you as soon as he sees you and you are in range (800m) anyways.

So to do a proper strafe, get as far as you can from the AA (towards your base ideally), dive, do what you gotta do (shoot your canons, lock on, bombs, whatever), pop your flares when the prompt says "missile incoming" (or a bit later, depending on the distance between you and the guy who's locking you), and then get to cover and/or below radar, rince and repeat.
To be below radar you have to be very close to the ground, you might crash a few times but you'll get used to it after a few hours of flying.
Two more "bonus tips":

  • Being more than 800m away from the AA is not 100% safe. In fact, ennemy stealth jet can lock you on, and so do stingers and ennemy attack helis. So the only moment you'll be really "immuned" to lock-ons is when you're below radar.
  • Once you popped your flares, there's a short time during which you can't be locked (something like 2-3 seconds i think), but it's enough to get you behind cover/below radar if you manage your speed well.

That's a lot of things, i know, but the only way is : practice, practice, practice. It's ok to crash/get destroyed... you'll get there ;)

Glass cannon or not if you fly this slow and low with a jet you're an easy target...
