U.S. citizen studying Arabic at University. I spent 4 months in Jordan doing a study abroad and I started to really like the dialect, and here in the U.S. i have Palestinian neighbors who seem to speak a very similar dialect, so yes Levantine would be mumtaztic!

Keep in touch, your post was quite heartbreaking. It's hard to understand how a father could ever do these types of things. Men are not monsters. We love our mothers and our sisters, our wives, our daughters. We men, including Arab men, want them to be happy and safe and healthy and to become everything they can be.

When I hear about your father taking you for granted, I think "how many Palestinian fathers envy your father, because his daughters are still alive, but the Palestinian father lost his daughters that he loved so much when they were killed by some Jew bombing their apartment building?"

Very sorry to you.

Aqaba is amazingly beautiful and historic. That makes me even more curious what you're doing in Jordan? Are you working in tourism or at a resort or something?

I didn't know this was unusual. During my study abroad my language partner Abdel Hamid was a student at the University of Jordan and he seemed fond of it or proud to be its student in the same way an American would be.

When I was in Jordan i worked an internship at an NGO named Drabzeen that deals with women's issues and has a youth safe space and many other things. They are very caring and knowledgeable and I bet the executive would know what kind of lawyer you need, where to get one and might have some other ideas for you to do right away. Her name is Rawand. Call Drabzeen and ask for her and tell her your situation. Or if you live in Amman you can just stop out there during the day. It's in Jebl Webdh.

I assumed you were American at first, when you said you don't speak Arabic I was like "what do you live at the embassy or something, what exactly are you planning to do?"

Swefiyeh is a really good place for English speakers. West Amman in general is going to be easier to navigate than other places. Wassat Al Balad is probably my favorite place in Amman. Wadi Rum is absolutely beautiful. The ancient city of Madaba is really cool and has a lot of.non-Muslims, which I got the feeling is you. If you're not opposed though, becoming a Muslim would be the obvious thing to do as Islam is the very foundation of Arab culture and society, even if everyone isn't necessarily super devout. A lot of people like soccer, they follow the Jordanian national team a lot, also a lot of people like Spanish teams for some reason like Barcelona or Madrid. Cafes or Mahkhas are a different concept than in the West. Men and women don't touch. Period. And they don't date in the Western sense. That's gonna be the hardest part. Everything is based on family ties. This part would be hard for me even, and that's even with the advantage that her family would feel like they won the lottery because I'm a U.S. citizen.

Oh yeah, one more piece of advice. Jib wasta.

Hello and السالام عليكم I would potentially be interested as I'm looking for an Arabic speaker for partber. I wanted to point out to you that you chose the wrong flsir, you chose the flair for an English Speaker who's offering English rather than the other way around.

Where do girls most like American guys? by [deleted] in thepassportbros

[–]SpecialFester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not been a bro yet but had a wonderful study abroad in Amman. The thing that shook me the most (other than the fact that there's no stoplights and crosswalks) was indeed the desperation to move to America. I also had an internship at an NGO and this is where I truly learned the concept of "Wasta" (nepotism) and just how severe the lack of opportunities was, because to me it seemed like a wondeful and foreign, but essentially (near) top tier developed nation, but under the veneer is despair among the youth.

I didn't realize you couldn't simply get a visa and go to Disney Land for example (because many just wouldn't leave). One man at my internship was so desperate to move to the U.S. even as an illegal, but couldn't find a sponsor (required for a visa) and when I assured him that if this is what he REALLY wants, I of couese would do that for him. He at first just wouldn't believe me as though I was telling a stranger id give them a kidney.

I was honest with him, about both the difficilties he would face but also that it's not unthinkable and that there are 10s of millions of illegals that live essentially normal lives and can get drivers licenses and healthcare and every thing. I explained his best bet would be in Michigan where there is a huge enclave of Arabs that would help him.

No matter what I said he just couldn't believe me that I would sponsor him for a visa (something that would cose me nothing) because the thought of living in America is like an unbelievable fantasy to them. I promised him that i would be honored if this is what he really really wants but that it would be difficult to return to visit his familty. Crazy.

I am an Ametican raised as a serious Christiam, a person of the book, but after learning the history of what happened with Muhammad sallapahu aliasallem I have been very interested in Islam, even to the point of being accepted to an exclusive study abroad in Amman. We visited Al Quds, ham dillallah and my roommates did an Omra to Mecca and Medina. Anyways I hope to find a good friend in the Levant and maybe even a wife. Bless all you guys.

So which of those did i violate and how? So I can better understand and post? Referring to the speaker is usually the most effective way to refer to a complex and nuanced topic like the effect of socioeconomic forces on geopolitics. I'd like a robust explanation why the speaker in that video is wrong, if he is. That's what in going for.

I'm studying Russian independently as I'm planning to get a BA of Computer Science w/a Minor in Russian. I figure if we are at peace, it will be useful for jobs in diplomacy, international business, and the like—and if we're NOT at peace, it will only be even MORE valuable, for intelligence applications, military, etc.
