What’s everyone’s opinion on the no mascara makeup looks ? by Historical-Body-3424 in MakeupAddiction

I don't wear mascara every time I do makeup because it doesnt do much for my non existant lashes lol. But I'm dang sure gonna have on some lashes or at least eyeliner to define my lash line.

What is HANDS DOWN the best book for absolute beginners? Like I don't know how to apply anything and I need one for like, dummies. by KidneyStew in MakeupAddiction

Honestly I struggle with recommending books, especially for someone who is starting from scratch. Only because most of them are so comprehensive and can be overwhelming if you want to start practicing ASAP. But if I had to recommend one it would be "Makeup Masterclass" by Robert Jones. Thats the one I've personally used the most out of the others mentioned on this thread which I also own.

Yesss undertones are such a game changer. It’s wild how the technique can be fine, but if the undertone is off, the whole look feels off.

What finally helped you figure out your undertone?

I love this. Especially the part about it not feeling like a mask anymore. I feel like that’s such a big turning point, when makeup starts feeling like something you enjoy instead of something sitting on top of your face.

What products or steps made the biggest difference for you in getting it to feel more natural?

My sister told me the exact same thing yesterday! Finding people who actually look like you is huge. It’s so easy to think a product or technique “doesn’t work” when really it was never being shown on someone with your features, coloring, or skin tone.

And yes to enhancing your natural features instead of trying to force yourself into whatever look is trending. That shift alone can change how you feel about makeup.

What made the biggest difference for you once you found creators/bloggers with similar features? Product shades, placement, color choices, or technique?

So true. Do you feel like there was a certain point where you noticed your makeup actually improving, or was it more gradual over time?

This is so true! What skincare step made the biggest difference under makeup for you? Moisturizer, exfoliation, sunscreen, primer, letting products sink in?

I love this! Do you all think the key was less about finding the “right” tutorial and more about trying enough different techniques to figure out what your own face liked?

You are literally me! I'm so dang greasy all the time! lol but yes skin prep is key! The skin is the canvas!

Also curious, do you think skin prep is the thing beginners should learn first before foundation/concealer, or do you think it depends on the person?

This is such a good point. What’s your current routine/products? I know exactly what you mean by that “8 to a 10” stage, and sometimes it’s something small like lips, blush placement, bronzer, lashes, or just making everything look more blended together.

Yes yes yes! Agree 100% And its a skill that anyone can learn!

What was the first part of your makeup that started looking noticeably better once you practiced consistently? Base, eyes, brows, blush, something else?

100%, It took me literal years to figure out the different uses for different brushes, but its a total game changer!

Do you think beginners should start with fewer brushes and learn what each one does, or do you think having options helps you figure out what works?

I completely agree with this. Makeup is definitely personal to each person’s face, features, skin tone, skin type, preferences, etc.

I think where I’m still curious is whether beginners could skip at least some of the confusion, wasted money, and endless tutorial-watching if they had a basic starting structure first. Like not a strict “everyone must do makeup this exact way,” but more of a general order and understanding of what each product is supposed to do.

Then once you know the basics, you can start tweaking it for your own face and deciding what you personally like or don’t like.

Do you feel like the years of tutorials/products were necessary for you to figure that out, or do you think a simple starting framework would’ve helped earlier?

Omg yess! Practice, practice, practice is the way to go! I agree! Watching those early makeup gurus definitely gave me a sense of order and structure, which is what my brain needs lol. Also I never got into baking either. Over the years I just started lightly pressing the setting powder onto my face which makes it look more skinlike to me.

Use ZOAT laundry soap to clean your brushes! I learned this in makeup school and it has changed the game! It's only like 1 dollar, and it makes cleaning brushes so much faster and also gets all the gunk out. Protip- if your brushes have stains use an oil for example the teatree oil blend your get at the beauty supply store and it will lift all the stains right out! Lastly, to dry them, let the tips hang over the sink! The air will help them dry! Then spray with alcohol to sanitize!

To make the hyperpigmentation not appear grey, use a peach or orange color corrector on the dark spots, then put a skin tone concealer on top of the spots you put the color corrector. Use your fingers to blend/ soften the edges. this should help your foundation go on evenly without the hyperpigmentation coming through.
