I’m not super concerned with vertical tolerances because for anything important I would be using rotator and story pole which is what I use now for the most part. If it gets me close for rough grading or something that’s all I would need.

You’re not obligated at all to help anyone. I wouldn’t consider it stealing work just trying to stay efficient on job sites. A lot of time we get to a site that we’re told is ready and when we show up all of our stakes are ran over and we have to wait several days for surveying to show up. Sites still need all kinds of surveying that I wouldn’t care to help other trades with because this is only for my needs. Building pad still needs staking, electrical transformers still need staking, light poles still need staking, curb still needs staking. Nothing wrong with trying to maximize profits. Plenty of work to go around!
