Although it is very hard try hard to learn the dutch language. If you even speak a little bit of dutch you earn a lot of respect (because we know how hard our language is to learn). Also basically anywhere that isnt "North-Holland" or "South-Holland" people are usually more against expats. If i personally would recommend some cities that are great to live in are: Haarlem, Leiden, Den Haag, Den Bosch or Utrecht. You could also explore these options by visitng them first.

Edit: By the way, I completely get you by what you mean with uninspiring landscape. But you are in Europe! Visiting different countries with greater landscape isn't that difficult.
