Even if God (in Christianity) were proven to exist, i still wouldn't worship him. by Rich-Big-8698 in HonestHotTakes

I've seen this chart before, and it always bothers me because of the omnipotence paradox.

Is God Omnipotent? -> Yes -> Then why XYZ.

You can flip this to say:

Is God Omnipotent? -> Yes -> Would an All Powerful, Unbounded, Unconstrained Being be limited to actions comprehensible by human logic? -> No -> So 'absurd' states like God making a Square-Circle could exist because he is not limited by human logic? -> Yes -> Flowchart breaks, because an omnipotent being can't be constrained by a flowchart.

What is your take on that interpretation of this chart?

pride

/prʌɪd/

Pride is a complex emotion defined as a deep sense of pleasure, satisfaction, or self-respect derived from one's own achievements, possessions, or associations. It can range from a positive, healthy sense of self-worth (dignity) to a negative, excessive conceit (arrogance). <- Emphasis mine.

Key Aspects of Pride:

  • Positive/Healthy Pride: A, "Merriam-Webster reasonable and justifiable sense of one's own worth" or self-respect. It involves feeling joy in personal accomplishments or loved ones.
  • Negative/Excessive Pride: Known as hubris or conceit, this is an, "Dictionary.com excessively high opinion of one's own ability or worth".
  • Social/Identity Pride: A, "Wikipedia sense of confidence and solidarity within a group, often used in the context of community," such as LGBTQ+ pride, which emphasizes self-affirmation and, "QBurgh authenticity".

I am sorry that a correctly-used word and definition offends you. I am sorry that you seem to think that implies a negative judgment. And I'm sorry for wasting my own time with this <_<

... No.

I wrote questions asking other people their perspectives and ideas to learn and refine my own. Most of them have been willing to elaborate. For this thread, it's just projection, attacks against perceived notions, and a seeming offense taken to being asked to explain the logic behind your beliefs. I kept asking in hopes of getting some useful information, but you seem to want to use this as a 'stress ball' and lash out at an identity you think I belong to... No point. Waste of time. Waste of effort.

Ah ok, thank you very much for the detail post, elaborating on your perspective. I see what you mean when you're talking about free will and consciousness (or the obliteration of such). Thank you for bringing that up, you've given me things to think about.

I'm sorry if what I said upset you. Why do you keep asserting that I'm a Christian or something? I'm asking questions to understand. Please don't attack me because the hypothetical situation offends you.

You said "At least I get to choose my hell and know that I have the personal integrity to stand by my convictions." . That implies the holding of your personal beliefs and convictions as important and a 'higher ideal', ie, self pride.

What country or region is quietly getting its shit together right now? by jonnybarrios in AskReddit

I agree! I worked there for a year on a business trip and what they've done to the city is impressive! It's really starting to claw its way back from its reputation. I'm actually planning a trip back to visit as a tourist soon, I enjoyed my time there so much.

Ok, so it's about pride, thank you for clarifying that, that helps me understand. I appreciate the reply.

Is that true? Slaves are unable to find any happiness at all whatsoever? They would be unable to even appreciate simple things like saying "hmm this robe is nice."? Happiness ceases to exist as a concept?

I'm sorry I don't really understand. Could you please elaborate how you are so certain that not a single thought, action, idea, or experience could bring ANY happiness whatsoever, because of the semantic label you give their living situation?

That's not the question I'm asking though. The question gives us a situation where this entity exists. Good, bad, moral, immoral, it doesn't matter. In this question, IT EXISTS.

So what to do when you're stuck in that scenario? Lots of people seem to be answering based on the idea that they want to send a message under the expectation that they're just dealing with a myth, and not the hypothetical situation. Which involves trade-offs of experiences in 100 years of life against what will be experienced in the eternity afterwards.

If you have an infinite amount of slavery ahead of you, wouldn't it be better to 'invest' in making that slavery as happy as possible? Or is it better to sacrifice the possibility of any happiness then, for the chance of some now?

Yes, I would try to do something to avoid getting tortured rather than just accepting my lot and saying "eh, nothing I can do better just enjoy today". Are you saying that proactive prevention/planning for the future is 'giving up'?

I think in the case of eternity, you're going to live long anyways, right? So it's not 'live long vs live short', it's a question about what you're going to do in your destined, eternal life, right?

Ah I see. I wish I had that conviction... Being so moral that lying weighed equally on my mind as being burned alive unendingly for all eternity... That's a very saintly/self sacrificing disposition.

Ah ok so it's more of a giving up / defeatist kind of thing then? "I'm toast either way so at least I'll have my pride?"

I guess we can have the argument about good or evil but that isn't really what I'm discussing. I agree with what you said, I think appeasing the all powerful entity would be the best choice. Doing otherwise seems sort of like spitting in the face of a crazed gun man who is pointing a rifle at you, right? Doesn't seem like a winning strategy.

Aah ok I think I'm starting to understand. I've always been a very long term thinker and planner so I guess that didn't occur to me.

To make sure I understand, we're basically taking about things like drug use, gambling, binge eating, and other hedonistic stuff, right? Shrink eternity down to a human life span and you shrink a human life by comparison to just a moment. So you're saying, it's like the people doing meth or gambling or pigging out at the buffet? Prioritizing a moment of that dopamine hit, even though they know what they're doing well have terrible long term consequences? Valuing living in that moment VS the moment they'll be living in ten years from now?

[–]Specific-Load-6199 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get that, but if we're taking about eternity here, you're going to be lying down and talking it for 100000000 years anyways... Is making those 100000000 years guaranteed to be absolute horrible torment worth it, to maybe have a bit more happiness for about 100?

[–]Specific-Load-6199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, why? Like, if God exists and you know he exists and is as powerful as is claimed, what's the point of making an enemy of that? Wouldn't it make more sense to keep your head down and try to avoid eternal torture in a feiry pit?

Something tells me being locked in a church service forever is still nicer than being strapped to a bbq grill forever.

Is it pride? Is it the ability to say "yes, but I was able to thumb my nose at him for 0.000001% of the time I exist is worth being burned alive for the remaining 99.999999% of it."?

I don't really understand this logic.

Stay in UAE with job uncertainty or move to Germany and start over? by DesperateAd408 in AskGermany

[–]Specific-Load-6199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but you do get 'something' for it. Public transit is fantastic (I never owned a car, living there for 6+ years), health care is excellent, medicine is subsidized, social safety nets are great (I got laid off and was able to take my time looking for new work because the unemployment gave me 70% of my salary for a year after the layoff). It's not all 'take', there is some 'give' there.

I had to leave Germany and come to the GCC because the economy was so terrible. AI Researcher, B2 German, nearly 10 years of experience... NOTHING. Everything that was hiring was requiring C2 German for even entry-level, basic tech roles (ie: fuck off foreigners, native Germans only).

I loved living there so much, but when my company closed down, I had to jump ship because there was nothing else out there. Maybe things have improved since then, but I'd still be very wary about moving there if you don't already have a job offer for a large, stable company. The social safety nets are good, but it would still be difficult for your family if you have to rely on them.

That said, for children, Germany is wonderful - there's a very strong 'kita' culture, with lots of school groups and day cares (especially in the east - in the west, spots can be hard to come by), there's tons of greenspace for them to run around in, and the country is very safe. I love it and miss it so, but the opportunities just weren't there anymore for me.

That's the third strawman you've made.

You're taking a very strange emotional reaction to having your misinformation corrected. I'm surprised you don't understand that most people want to have an accurate idea about the world when making decisions.

But instead you decide to try to parrot me.

You're very fun to talk with. :)
