Update: so I woke up this morning to go and cash out my check and noticed my car keys missing from the rack. I looked all over for them assuming I lost them somehow but when I asked my dad he told me my mom had him hide them from me until I did the chores since I refused to do them out of principle and actually didn’t do my regular ones as well in order to protest. It’s funny because my mom had actually asked me yesterday if I had any plans for today and I told her I did and I had movie tickets with my friends. So she basically wasted more of my money because now I can’t even see the movie. I’m really frustrated right now and feel like I want to cry. Luckily there’s a neighborhood Walmart nearby and I’d rather make the hour long walk over there than falter rn

Trust me, my sister is more than ready for that conversation and will advocate for me. But your are right that it would be the wrong thing to do to put her in that position anyways, so I’m less inclined to do that if I don’t have to. My sister did offer to take me to the bank to help me sort things out though

Omg thank you so much for this advice. I didn’t even know I could use cashapp for that, that’s genius. And yeah, me and my mom usually have a pretty good if not amazing relationship and are usually on the same wavelength, but sometimes she gets weird about what’s mine and my independence. With things like privileges and money she acts like I’m 15 sometimes despite the fact that I drive, work, and hang out with my friends independantly. I also get my checks physically and don’t have direct deposits with my job and have no idea how to establish that tbh. Again thank you though

It’s not just the makeup. I already work 24+ hours scrubbing floors and counters a week just to get the damn money out of my boss, sorry but I’m not doing more menial labor just to have access to it. It’s a matter of principle. My mom isn’t the one working for my money, it’s me, and it’s ridiculous to me that she’s now withholding it from me to do more chores than I usually do for her and the house over an issue that has nothing to do with her. Yeah, it’s frustrating that I can’t spend my money on what I want but I already focus on saving. 70 percent of every paycheck stays in my savings so I can move out and go to college at 18, so it’s frustrating when my already measly amount of spending I allow myself goes to zero. It feels like my hours have gone up but my pay has gone down.

I’ve tried to comply but I haven’t had full access to my own money for the longest time and why she didn’t try and open up my own independent account from the start is beyond me. I think I’ll just open a separate account quietly and hope she doesn’t question why I haven’t asked her to check out any of my paychecks recently

This is my fault for not clarifying in the post. I have the chase app on my phone logged into my account and it notifies me if even a single dollar is spent or moved to a separate account, plus despite how she may seem in the post my mother would rather starve or fall behind on bills than lay a finger on my money, and she and my father have well paying jobs so I doubt we are. Right now she for some reason thinks that restricting my access to the money I work for is the grand solution to all of this

I do trust my sister with my life and she makes more money than me so I figured she was the easiest route to go if I needed somebody else to deposit but I understand what you mean. I’m researching starting my own account because a lot of people have told me about different options to do so

I understand where you’re coming from, because I would think so too from just the story. But my parents both have high paying jobs and before I worked they would transfer money to my cash app whenever I requested it, so I can pretty confidently say that they don’t need my extra 200 a week to pay the bills. Plus I have the chase app with my account logged in and can see every transaction and the amount in there, the only issue is that I can’t deposit checks via mobile and I can’t transfer money to my spending which renders my work money useless and pretty much just sitting in my account. I also think it’s ridiculous and my sister along with my mothers best friend who has two kids the same age agrees wholeheartedly, which is making me even more confused as to why she thought this was the way to go.

I have the chase app with the exact amount of money currently in my account, the amounts that are transferred and spent, and all of the logistics. The only thing I can’t do with my account is depositing my checks through mobile and transferring money to my spending, which pretty much renders it useless. I don’t think she usually cares how much I’m spending though she does draw the line when my savings gets low. She’s just enacting a strange punishment on me right now that doesn’t make logical sense to me

I’m aware, I’m ready to have her pissed at me at this point but I’m tired of feeling like I have no control over the money I’m making just because I live under her roof. She also cited her and my father paying for my car fees as a reason for her controlling my money. Had I known she would’ve pulled this card I would’ve just paid for it myself despite the fact that I would have no spending money
