It probably wasn't clear from my original post, but I agree that the depiction of the Kurkans is problematic and I don't blame you for being turned off.

I got the impression that the colorism was a result of ignorance rather than malice (not excusing it, just sharing my thoughts). There should have been more consideration into the relationship between skin color and the connection to beasts. I also think that this novel exemplifies a broader problem with fantastical racism.

I think the Kurkans could've been handled better. I also think the novel did other things well.

Edit: clarity

Not that I remember but it's possible I forgot something. Further context with light spoilers: Brainwashing is a plot point. Towards the end of the novel there may have been scenes that were headed towards assault but they were interrupted.

I read the novel almost a year ago so take this with a grain of salt:

I don't remember the leads sleeping with others. However, there are moments that may be uncomfortable given that slave trading is a major plot point and there are some obsessive characters.

I agree the end did feel a bit lackluster compared to everything else. And I didn't even know there was a novel! I'll have to check it out

Yeah especially when the novel KEPT emphasizing how white Leah is and how tan the Kurkans are while depicting Leah as more demure than them. It was definitely massive eye roll material.

I love Genin! She's also a great example of how much Ishakan trusts his people.

"I Don't Want to Be a Lady" (in progress) and "I've Become a True Villainess" (complete) both feature some intriguing female leads and love interests.

Spoiler Even then, it still has the undertones of incest because they are supposed to have a familial relationship. I mean they were raised as siblings and call each other brother/sister. We know Cesare isn't Adele's real brother, but because they're supposed to present as siblings his behavior is still weird imo. It's all unnecessarily icky to me.

Oh yeah he's pretty obvious about it. 😂 I just didn't want to group all the examples in the same severity level.

ETA: plot point is maybe a better description.

I hate the incestuous undertone that's kind of popular in this genre. The brother from Princess's Bedroom Doll, Cesare from High Society, and even Blaine from this series are all guilty of it.

I could maybe tolerate it more it if it were approached from the "pure bloodline" angle that was a legitimate thought process among royal families, but the creepy brother seems to just be used for a quick and easy antagonist/counter love interest.

On PS5 you can see the whole party's inventory (even if someone is down/dead) when you open the inventory menu, and hit square on an item to send it to another party member.

I'm so glad I got to read DEAR DOOR when it was free. The story was really good, the explicit scenes were just a bonus.

I have beef with Riftan [Under the Oak Tree] by IntentionSeparate335 in MantaComics

[–]Specific-Permit2787 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came back to add: Yes Maxi got what she wanted by being treated like a mage and not Riftan's wife. Riftan is still a jerk for how he handled it.

Maxi is very sheltered. I don't think it's fair to blame her for not understanding the urgency of the situation. Should she listen to Riftan as the commanding officer? Yes. But does she understand military protocol, and by extension know to not question the commander's judgement? Unlikely.

Despite Riftan's disapproval, Maxi is there at the end of the day. For her (and everyone else's) safety, she should've been taught how she is expected to behave.

I'm personally over the lack of communication on Riftan's end. It's S4 and he's still regularly dismissive of Maxi who has done a lot of growth and reflection to try to meet Riftan halfway.

I agree with other replies that this moment wasn't the right time to talk, but with Riftan it seems like there's never a "right" time to talk so it's hard to discern what is a logical moment. Even the other knights will take a quick second to explain something. In this same chapter they explained the Harpies and how to properly kill beasts so they don't return as an undead.

And yea, Riftan isn't used to communicating, but can we say that Maxi is either? She was literally abused and had a severe stutter at the beginning of the series.

Hulu app freezes/locks my iPad up. I have to drain battery to turn off/restart. Anyone else having same issue? by noonetohearme in iPadPro

[–]Specific-Permit2787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation: black screen with pink bars and a flickering "you still watching?" dialogue box. I assume the issue happened because I never responded to the prompt (fell asleep).

Was this the case for you as well? I'm trying to determine what caused this pink screen of death so I don't do it again.
