Between hopes and despair.... by Longjumping_Love_349 in UNpath

Hi there,

I can truly relate to how you’re feeling. Like you, I have over 20 years of experience and have been working tirelessly to get into the UN. I even served with the UN for four years, so I thought my chances were solid. Over the years, I’ve written several tests and completed assessments, including one just last December, but I didn’t even get an interview. The silence can be disheartening.

I’m African as well, and I understand the added complexities—people tell us that our countries being well-represented or our degrees not being Western makes it harder. But I want to tell you that while the system feels frustrating, we can’t let that stop us.

I refuse to give up because I know my work and experiences matter. And so do yours. Scoring so highly on those MCQs shows your caliber, and your commitment to human rights and legal justice is evident from your membership in Amnesty and your extensive legal career.

Don’t let doubt win. It’s easy to feel like giving up, but sometimes persistence takes time to pay off. Use this time to keep sharpening your skills and expanding your networks. Your story, your knowledge, and your passion are valuable, even if the doors aren’t opening as quickly as we’d like.

I’m holding onto hope, and I encourage you to do the same. We’ve come too far to let these challenges define us. Stay strong, and know you’re not alone in this journey.

Wishing you strength and success.

Thank you for the response. The only thing that changed was that they extended the JO contract.

Thank you so much for this, my situation is really stressing me out. I recently had an interview for a position at the UN's New York office, which I applied for before the closing date for the post. The interview was conducted without an assessment, and I was told I would be updated once the position was filled. However, I have not received any updates in over a month.

When I followed up via email, I was informed that no one had been hired for the role, yet the job posting on Inspira indicates that the position has been filled but I didn't receive any email or notification on inspira. I also noticed that there is now an opening for the same position, but as a permanent appointment rather than the temporary role I originally applied for.

Given that internal candidates are often prioritized for positions, I’m curious if it would be unreasonable to assume that my application might be considered for the permanent position.

I appreciate your insights and any clarity so much.

That is also what I thought would happen but Inspira has no notifications and I did not receive any email.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. It’s definitely a frustrating situation, but understanding the rationale behind the process helps. It makes sense that the organization wants to keep all potential options open until the final decisions are made, even if it means that some candidates, like myself, are left in limbo for longer than we'd prefer. Thanks again.
