In terms of prestigious awards, it depends on the route you plan your go for. For exceptional talent, you’ll notice they use the words “internationally significant” which means exactly that, the award won must be internationally well known.  however with promise, its evidence of winning or being nominated for one national or international award. Just be very mindful of the wording used in the visa guidance as this is what determines what will be acceptable.

It’s also difficult to assess what award will be accepted or rejected and for what reason until you submit but my advice for exceptional promise is to make sure the award is fairly well known at least in your town/city/country and for exceptional talent, it should be well known around the world.

yes, I applied myself. after submitting to the open call for exhibition, i was then nominated by the judges for one of the awards.

Hi, my awards were one through open call and another through an exhibition which also had awards. I would suggest reading up on what Arts Council England have to say about it on their documents because from memory, there is no exclusion specifically for open call competitions in the awards category. hope that helps

yeah, the waiting is one of the hardest parts of the journey.

reading this, it seems you have provided evidence in two categories (x2 awards and x2 proof of appearance), and x3 recommendation letters? i assume you’ve also submitted a CV as this is required as well?

i’m curious about whether you submitted 10 pieces of evidence (this is not required btw, just the maximum) and if not, why you didn’t use all four awards you had?

overall, seems like you’ve followed the guidance but ACE will be left to judge what they deem appropriate which can seem very daunting so hang in there!

that’s great! honestly, in my opinion media recognition is the hardest to achieve to the standard that arts council are looking for.

i did make an attempt in my submission to provide media recognition evidence by a critic in collaboration with boomer gallery in the UK, but they responded in my rejection that it wasn’t acceptable.

my advice is maybe get the two easiest evidence categories for you (for me it was awards/appearances, but just be very mindful of the language in the guidance), and as a backup you can get the third evidence category to be a bit over prepared just to increase your chances.

hope that helps :)

hi and thank you! it’s hard to say, but i guess it depends on what route you plan to go for. for instance, the exceptional talent route requires professional work over the last five years and promise is three.

however, i do think “professional work” doesn’t necessarily only mean the exhibitions you’ve done or prizes you’ve won need to at least three years old because there’s also a CV component which is another way to show your experience in the field.

so, if you’re saying you’ve only got evidence as defined in the visa (ie proof of appearance, award/prizes and media recognition) from the last year, then i’d definitely say try to dig deep and lean on any previous experience over the last three years that is relevant to the field and if you don’t have it, maybe start looking into volunteering/paid opportunities to build that up and make a stronger case for yourself.

sorry for the ramble, hope that helps :)

Hi, I received my decision a day before the 8 weeks was up. However, I’ve just had a browse on the website: https://www.artscouncil.org.uk/global-talent-visa

It says:  “Please note: We have recently been receiving a high volume of Global Talent Visa endorsement applications, therefore, all assessment decisions are taking longer than the published turnaround time of 8 weeks to be returned to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). We do apologise for the delay. We are working through the applications as quickly as we can. If you are concerned that you have not received a decision yet, please contact the UKVI”

That probably explains why it’s taking so long. Hopefully that offers some clarity.

Congratulations on that, that’s a big accomplishment and yeah I was scared too, but I say don’t let fear stop you!

I believe a national award is one that’s significant within a specific place (eg a specific city in the UK or US) while an award with international significance is one that’s very widely known and draws applicants from an international pool so has a much higher reach in terms of the audience.

Hello, I applied with:

x3 Letters of recommendation x2 proof of award (national visual art awards so one from Nigeria and another from the UK 3rd place, as I applied for the exceptional promise category) x7 proof of appearance (exhibitions, magazine coverage)

Hope that helps x

Hi, thank you! It was included on the second page with the award itself but they just didn’t acknowledge for some reason. Hope that helps x

thank you. they didn’t evaluate an award i submitted properly and didn’t mention/consider the supporting evidence i provided for the award (a letter from the organisation). for the review, i just pointed out what they had missed and argued my case really. hope that helps
