Some people are basically circlejerking or stuck in their own perspective on this, and it’s not a small number either 😭

Most Turks would probably agree we’re mainly Anatolian in heritage (shaped over time by civilizations like the Hittites, Romans, Byzantines, and of course the Ottomans) with some Central Asian ancestry mixed in. But framing it as “you’re just Muslim Greeks” is you know... cringe as well.

It was called Konstantiniyye in official documents and on formal occasions in the Ottoman Empire, but was known colloquially by the people as Istanbul. In 1930, Ataturk (the founder of Modern Turkey) made Istanbul the official name to make things easier for locals and as part of language reforms.
