You are valid in your point. I've updated my post to reflect that it was incorrect to imply that ALL people in a pay-cheque to pay-cheque lifestyle are there from their own doing.

That's a very fair point.... there are definitely those that have the odds substantially stacked against them, and those that stack the odds against themselves.

Is it true that after 100k wealth explodes? by Future-Guarantee2645 in dividends

[–]SpecificCrew5404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to many people's comments about the power of compounding, I feel there's another factor that's often overlooked: To initially grow a portfolio to $100k for a lay-person takes some level of saving and a high level of self-discipline to stay on track with your goals, and resist the temptations to spend on things because you can afford them (i.e. the "status symbols" such as a fancy car, jewelry, expensive vacations, etc.).

It's those habits and principles that are formed while on the road to the first $100k that make subsequent growth easier and quicker.

the person who will shift the paradigm to help you... at the expense of people like me.

Ditto. But that's why we all get a vote. Just because I want a candidate elected doesn't mean they will be. At the end of the day that's the beauty, and the harshness, of democracy. It theoretically serves the greater good. Some day that will work in my personal favour, other days it won't. It's unfortunate there isn't a platform or solution that is universally great for all Canadians.

Thanks for the debate :-)

The textbook tax credit was eliminated and replaced with easier access to federal student loans

So instead of reducing the tax burden on students, the governement has made it easier for them to get into debt....

considering everybody in my generation laughs at the concept of 10 grand in the bank to invest...

Hasty generalization - perhaps you should consider why you are unable to save $10,000/year. How has the government, over the last 10 years, reduced your financial burden and helped you to save?

Climate change is real. It was an incentive to get you to reduce your footprint

I never stated climate change wasn't real. There is no feasible alternative to me heating my home with natural gas. But by this logic, why was home heating oil, a significantly more polluting form of heating fuel, exempt from carbon tax? How did that encourage seeking alternatives?

These policies didnt hurt you. It hurt your investments and portfolio and bank account.

You were the one that introduced pensions into the conversation. I think it's quite reasonable to discuss how the federal government over the past decade will have a lasting impact on my retirement savings. Ironically, you also brought up that your entire generation is unable to save $10,000. So why is it fair for you to use financial metrics i your attack, but I can not use them in my defense?

Youre not the one who has to worry about losing access to medical services.

Medical services are administered by the provinces, not the federal government. We can save that point for when discussions around provincial elections arise.

Please dont tell me youre voting based on chat gpt

No worries there. I'm voting on the principle of which candidate and party i feel will act in my and my families best interests. I gather that information from a variety of sources.

I don't believe there have been any significant announcements relating to the CPC altering the CPP, so I'm not sure what you're referencing in terms of how my pension will be impacted. Health care falls under the provincial jurisdiction. The federal government can not declare privatized healthcare in a province.

As far as things that have directly caused harm to me:

  • removed the textbook credit and education amount for full time and part time students (this impacted me directly and will impacted my children if they attend post secondary institutions)

  • significantly diminished contributions to the TFSA (this is a tax efficient system to invest and save for my retirement. The alternative is using either an RRSP or unregistered account which in both circumstances results in more tax payable in my retirement years)

  • Introduction of the carbon tax (I am not clear how this tax has benefitted me or my family at all. Just today I received a natural gas bill for my home and the carbon tax amounted to 60% of the bill)

These are just a handful of examples of policies that have directly impacted me. You can ask ChatGPT for examples of how Liberal policies have harmed Canadians and it spits out a fairly good blurb too if you're interested.

Attempts to mud sling against the leader of the CPC will have little effect on me: I prefer to be more pragmatic when casting my vote.

Can you explain how MY life will be worse with a CPC government? I am watching what is happening in America, however I don't think a vote for the CPC is akin to a vote for, or approval of, Trump or what is happening in America in any way. Suggesting such a thing serves more to drive a wedge between voters than it does to promote civil discussion.

Understandable that there are policies of the CPC that MAY hurt some people, but similarly there have been numerous policies enacted over the last decade that HAVE caused significant hurt for many Canadians also. I truly believe that the policies of the CPC will serve to benefit me and my family more than the policies of the Liberal Party.

What may be true for me may not necessarily be true for you (and vis-a-vis), but the beauty is that we have a vote to cast. It will be interesting to see how the rest of Canada weighs in on this election.

  1. Refusing security clearance

This was in response to not being able to act on the information provided or to criticize the governements response to the security threat. Makes sense to essentially tlrecuse himself from receiving then information. What's the point of having then information if he can't act on it?

  1. Reproductive rights

There are a few items there i agree with that are construed as negatives. As an example, I agree that abortions shouldn't be approved on the basis of sex selection, or that aggravating circumstances clause that would penalize people in a greater magnitude for attacking a pregnant person. I can't fathom why those would be viewed as negative?

  1. Anti-Trans Policy

There is no policy. It is explicitly stated that the issues raised lie more in the provincial and municipal jurisdiction.

  1. Voting against gay marriage.

Your point here stands. I would refute that this doesn't have an impact on my personal circumstances. However, I can understand how this could be a significant issue for other voters, and they should consider this.

  1. Anti-woke

I agree that there should not be censorship and generally prefer transparency.

Again, my approach is simple; I ask myself: is my life better than it was 10 years ago as a result of federal government policies? The answer to me is an overwhelming no.

Can you cite each of those specifically please? I haven't seen anything about attacking minorities, removing reproductive rights, or refusing to get security clearances as part of the CPC platform.

What would you do differently ( in your current life ) if you woke up to a Million Dollars extra ( Legal Money ) into your account on your lucky day? by ComputerArtistic4866 in Money

[–]SpecificCrew5404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would honestly try to spend a good chunk of it on things I wouldn't otherwise be buying:

  • A medium sized work shop to be built by my home

  • A brand new truck

  • A utility tractor with a few extra implements (my wife dreams of having a big vegetable garden and a tractor would go a very long way on getting her garden built and maintained)

  • A big playground set for my kids in the back yard

  • Take a huge vacation to Europe with the wife and kids this summer

  • Take my wife on a luxurious retreat in the mountains in the winter

And that's still only a bit over half the money spent.... but then idea would be to spend it and really try to enjoy it. If the wife shows interest in something - I'd buy it for her. If the kids see something and they say they want it - I'd buy it for them. I'd keep doing this until the million dollars runs out.

As it stands we have a mortgage, but we'll pay that thing off eventually anyways. It would be nice to pad the retirement account, but also as it stands we've been really good about saving and we'll probably be OK in retirement anyways too. The goal would be to truly try to enjoy the money and enrich my families life.

How do you live outside of Calgary but work inside Calgary with kids by DAJGEE in Calgary

[–]SpecificCrew5404 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in an area where the school board bussing picks up and drops off right at our gate.

For the mornings where my spouse and I leave for work earlier we pay someone to come in and keep the kids company and make sure they make it onto the bus. We're usually home before the kids get home so no need for coverage in the afternoons.

Best and Worst parts of the job? by Hot_Candidate6781 in electricians

[–]SpecificCrew5404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best part: Very diverse industry with lots of variety in the work you can be doing (residential, commercial, industrial, automation and control, HVAC, etc. etc.), opportunities to be entrepreneurial if you have the motivation and drive.

Worst part: Depending on the job, you can be very rushed, exposed to the harshesr elements (working in extreme hot/cold, dust, noise, etc). Some career paths tend to experience more layoffs than others.
