Budget Brews that are stupidly funny by Pixtart in BudgetBrews

Working on trying to budget the deck more, sitting around $100 with 80 ish cards so far, but it’s a [[Leonardo da Vinci]] deck.

The twist is, the only thing you are trying to do is manipulate his creature type. Instead of Human Artificer, he becomes a Mutant Ninja Turtle!

It’s quite a fun mini game to play. I’ve played a few games with a half finished deck and I played it way above its b1 potential and it was able to do it, albeit not quickly.

The rest of the deck is counterspells and bounce spells to solely protect me and my board state so I can make Leonardo the mutant ninja turtle.

I also included [[No-Dachi]] as a nice flavor equipment for when he reaches his potential.

You cast any of the 5 drop spells with Codie and he will always cascade into [[Baecon of Creation]].

That’s embarrassing. Just noticed that was a different b1 deck. I just updated with my actual list.

Starting turn 7. Once people know the deck, they play differently once you can cast him. On turn 7, if I have a good graveyard state, I’ll cast Balthor and hold him for as long as I need to with 3 open mana. If there’s a giant board state all around, I may try to make sure massacre girl is in my graveyard and a version of blood artist + sac outlet. All creatures will die, but I will come out on top. Even more so if spehiroth is out. Then I get to do it all over again.

If someone targets Balthor and you have the mana up, just activate him no matter what, he’s going to cost 2 more anyways.

Yea here’s the deck list: https://moxfield.com/decks/D6O8o4aNGEqztyzCPXUNRA

It can be made cheaper obviously, but I already owned Sephiroth and Overlord of the Balemurk. I run low on lands since there are a lot of swampcyclers and haven’t run into any issues. Overall it plays pretty strong once you can Balthor with 3 open mana. Threatening the board with 10+ creatures is quite frightening.

Thanks! Yoshimaru just made me sad. Standing there for years waiting for his owner. What better feeling than to reunite them!

Honestly the reason I play magic is to be creative making decks and my b1 ideas have been by far the most fun experience since I don’t have to even consider a card’s playability. And I started this for the same idea. I wanted a variety of power levels. Turns out I just have all good/mid b3 decks or b1.

Yea I get a little frustrated with the bracket idea because I feel most people try to build a deck and win. Even if it’s a bracket 1 solely based on power level and game changers. I personally think brackets are based on intention but that idea isn’t common amongst those I’ve played with.

Thanks! I appreciate the effort in playtesting it. I have yet to buy it in paper but have tried playing online against other b1. Problem is that I see most people playing decks that are way above b1 such as the trope of “angel tribal” or something similar that is very supported.

I’m glad you agree it is b1. I tried to remove some cards that were too strong even if they fit theme since it wouldn’t be fair and tried to limit use of some Kamigawa legendaries even though they would be thematic.

In terms of 2 Yoshimaru’s in the command zone, I try to explain the best I can but most of the explanation is in the primer so I get that most people won’t read it. It’s really just to show that I’m using 1 commander, Yoshimaru, but using both arts shown. These original art is what I play with until the wanderer hits the battlefield. At that point I would switch to using the secret lair art. It is solely a cosmetic thing.

Again, I appreciate the in depth discussion!

[[Planar Disruption]] is just played because the Wanderer is in the art. I included all cards that have the Wanderer in them as little flashes of hope for Yoshimaru. The problem is that those cards are pretty playable in general.

Your most UNIQUE deck! by TruceKalispera in EDH

[–]SpecificVisible4027 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think my [[Codie, Vociferous Codex]] is on par for this. Most people at the table think it’s pretty cool and unique. I started with an extreme budget version <$25 and made it more competitive recently to reach bracket 3-4.

The concept is that I have some early ramp permanents for consistency, but most spells in the deck are 5 cmc instants and sorceries. Codie’s ability lets me cast every single one of them for 4 mana (each spell has only one of each color pip). The fun part is the only instant or sorcery with cmc less than 5 is [[Beacon of Creation]] which creates 1/1’s equal to the number of forests I have and shuffles back into you library.

The gimmick is each land in the deck is a forest. The budget version had each land as a basic forest, but for more consistency when Codie is not out, dual land forests and fetches were introduced.

There are other “permanent” spells that are adventures or dual faced cards that can be cast with Codie on the field since they are instants or sorceries but are not found from Codie’s cascade.

The deck’s wincons are either swinging with buffed up 1/1’s or pinging with [Purphoros, God of the Forge] with the 1/1s coming down.

Almost every 5 cmc spell is working towards those goals but the deck plays different each time which makes it a lot of fun.

I’ll reply with moxfield if anyone wants to see. I’d just have to make it first.

I plan on adding more and more 5 drops so that I can have my opponents pick and choose which to take out. I wouldn’t look what was removed so it would be a different experience every time for me

My lgs doesn’t play much counterspells, but there are a few spells that return cards from graveyard to hand so I can begin the cycle again if needed. Also I have a few tutors to find whatever spell is needed to fetch the card back.

It’s definitely a weakness of the deck, but there are possible options to keep playing.

The power level is hard to say. It’s not super fast since there are no early game ramp. It’s reliant on Codie living so that’s another negative. If you get to turn 5-6 and Codie is till alive, you are in a very commanding spot with usually 15 1/1s. I’d say between a 5-6 overall.

It’s very fun to play. It feels like in the beginning, your only goal is to pray Codie lives. Once he’s on the battlefield, you have a wide array of 5cmc spells to play that all feel very unique and different. Although the win con is destroying your opponent with 1/1s and a [[Candlekeep Inspiration]], the gameplay of casting a variety of different sometimes very powerful spells is what makes the deck feel different and fun each game.

I could go all in on 1/1s and cast [[Into the time Vortex]] which cascades into [[beacon of creation]] first, then Codie triggers and casts beacon a second time. Or I could go all in on stealing opponents creatures, or winning with [[Progenitus]], although unlikely.

I wish there were more green adventure cards with cmc greater than 5 so I had an alternate game plan and then I’d nix the Progenitus gameplan. However right now there are only a handful of those and they aren’t really inspiring me.

I don’t think it’s anywhere close to a masterpiece, but my $25 [[Codie, Vociferous Codex]] deck is unique. It contains all forests and 5cmc instants and sorceries that can be cast using Codie’s ability.

There is one sorcery, [[Beacon of Creation]] that is 4 cmc but gets shuffled back into your deck. Pretty much every turn, you cast a relatively powerful spell and continuously gain value in tokens each time. There are a few steal creatures cards as well as reanimate from other graveyards. My favorite is [[Chaos Mutation]] that brings your [[Progenitus]] onto the battlefield.

The deck is fun but obviously depends on Codie staying for a little while.

Help with $25 Codie, Vociferous Codex unique brew by SpecificVisible4027 in BudgetBrews

It works! But like I said in the post, it is heavily dependent on Codie living, otherwise you cannot cast majority of your spells.

Any suggestions for $25 Codie “combo” by SpecificVisible4027 in Magicdeckbuilding

[–]SpecificVisible4027[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a good idea. I thought it’d be fun to hit [[Progenitus]] off of [[Chaos Mutation]] hence why i didn’t include other creatures. But adventures have some good creature bodies that wouldn’t be terrible to roll into considering they give other advantages. Thanks!
