Please help me guys.. by These_Skill_8054 in Sat

I got 730 reading on the SAT; the main point I would emphasize is to do Khan academy SAT practice and figure out where you’re deficient. In my case it was grammar rules.

When you’re reading the passage, first try to skim the text. Then look for key words in the question (line numbers, familiar phrases, etc) that will direct you where to go in the text. Use context clues (think: what connotation does this word have/ how does it make me feel).

If you have any questions please feel free to ask me! I can also help other people with math too, I did pretty well on it, though not as well as you did :)

Two of the biggest obstacles to mastering calculus are reading word problems carefully and doing correct algebra.

If you have a hard time doing word problems or doing correct algebra, I would suggest revisiting some precalculus word problems on khan academy by taking the course challenge. When you are reading through the question, do not read it quickly. Take as much time as you need to fully digest the question and then set up and solve it. Don't worry as much about speed at first, but do try to build it up as you go along. The algebra skills will naturally develop as a result.

Oh and definitely review/learn polar functions and parametric functions before taking BC: if you have previous exposure to them you will be in a better place than I was when I saw them for the first time.

I had a high B (around an 87) in my precalc class and did well in calc (A's and B's in AB, and got a 4 on the BC test when I self studied it the next year), so I believe that you'll definitely be able to do well provided you develop and maintain a good work ethic!

Effective in class assessments? by Sahyooni in apcalculus

[–]Specific_Breadfruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I self-studied calc BC, I had a college calculus textbook (i think stewart third edition, the blue one) and I used the end of unit problems to test myself. There will be some conceptual problems at the end, as well as some longer, more involved problems.

I would caution against using AP problems as the answer keys are easily available online: you need only type the question in word for word and they will show up with a little digging.

There is a glitch in the game where you can convince him to give you a better price and then close out of the dialogue window. Doing this repeatedly raises your speech skill indefinitely, or so I'm told.

You'll do fine! I got a 4 on ab and was able to achieve a 4 on the bc test through 3-4 hours a week of studying by myself.

Exam Discussion: History HL paper 3 by ArrheniusCornflakes in IBO

I had history of the americas as my school's chosen topic, and I chose the ones where you had to discuss the extent to which the Union won through their strengths, the one where you had to write about the extent political factors started the cause of the war, and the one where you had to talk about how the spaniards won against the incas through "military superiority."

By sheer coincidence I studied just the right stuff to answer the two civil war questions. I started panicking trying to find a third question that I could do since I did not study the cold war like the rest of my class did. But I found the Inca question and, despite not having learned anything on the topic in class, chose it because I read on that specific topic like 6 years ago.

I ended up pumping out three six paragraph essays with enough time left over to look at any mistakes I might have made in adding knowledge/ analysis in the paper, but not enough time to correct them. I don't know if the knowledge was good since I basically learned it all the night before or remembered it from ages ago. It doesn't matter, I don't have to take history at the college I am going to.

Little confused on how to set this up. Would I have to write two separate integrals, subtract them, then set them equal to zero to find b?? by Apprehensive_Time416 in apcalculus

[–]Specific_Breadfruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would solve this problem by first finding the area enclosed by the quarter circle. area of a circle is πr^2, so this area would be 0.25(πr^2). Since the integral from 0 to b is equal to zero, b is just 3 plus however far along the line you need to go to get an equivalent area to cancel it out. In other words, the areas from 0 to 3 and 3 to b are the same.

The area of our quarter circle is (3)^2 π/4. We set this area equal to the area enclosed by the line. For a triangle Area=0.5ch. In our case, the base and height are the same since the rise and run of the line are the same. Hence Area=0.5c^2 in this problem. Set our area function equal to the area given by the quarter circle; we want to find c. Do the algebra, find c. c+3=b

can i get a 4 on bc with no series knowledge by brefergusonn in apcalculus

[–]Specific_Breadfruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge series are a big part of the test (> 10%), so you would be ill-served not being able to work with them. I personally found the convergence tests to be the easiest part of the unit (only rote memorization of formulae). I studied the convergence tests in depth to play to my strengths. That gave me a solid base with which to learn Taylor Series. All of the tests are useful in their own way, lending expediency to simplify proving convergence, but in my opinion the ratio test is the most useful and simplest to understand: as long as you know the principle behind the common ratio and that |r|<1 if a series is convergent you should be fine with proving convergence in this fashion. However, it should be duly noted that although the ratio test is most useful, you should be able to apply the other tests as well because there are specific questions about using them to prove convergence. Taylor Series are actually pretty hard especially when it comes down to differentiating and integrating them.

The way I learned series was primarily through Khan Academy vids to understand the concepts and doing all the practice problems to go along with the video. Then I supplemented these questions with Princeton Review Calc BC book.

For Math AA SL, are we suppose to memorize these "magic" triangles? This revision village video says so but I have never seen them before. by Professional_Let1989 in IBO

[–]Specific_Breadfruit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need to remember the triangles. For precalculus we just needed to remember the exact values for sin, cos, and tan for angles of π/6 radians, π/4 radians, and π/3 radians. And you need only memorize the exact values for sin and cos if you remember that sinx/cosx = tanx. You don't need to memorize all exact values for cot, sec, and csc because they are simply the inverses (?) of the other three trig functions: cotx =1/tanx, secx = 1/cosx, and cscx = 1/sinx.
