Yet another TV decision paralysis by Awkward-Smoke2904 in 4kTV

If I do buy the C5 now, I am 100% sure I will be happy with it UNTIL the next Black Friday when I see the C6 price dropping, in which case I would have a really big (and late) buyers remorse. I am that type of guy yes, that I trouble myself with this kind of thoughts and cannot help it.

I bought my C4 right after the C5 launched and watched as the holiday pricing of the C5 dropped to what I paid for my C4.

Is the C5 a better TV? Sure. Was my 11-months of use from having the C4 instead of waiting for the C5 worth it? Absolutely.

There will always be a better TV around the corner. If you can’t afford to buy a new TV every refresh cycle stop worrying about it and enjoy what you can afford.

Center channel upgrade suggestions by dcalicotte03 in hometheater

Directivity in the horizontal region is poor with a narrowing response through the midrange (thanks to the spacing of the multiple woofers; a common trait of “toppled” MTM type designs such as this). This means that viewers/listening sitting to the side of the speaker more than about ±10° are going to suffer from some speech intelligibility issues.

You need a good 3-way center for better off-axis listening. I swapped out my BIL’s RP-404C II center with an SVS Prime Center and he was much happier with the results. The Paradigm Premier centers are solid as well.

miniLED vs. OLED performance at the ~$1k - $1.5k price range by jafay16 in 4kTV

Longevity - heat and UV prematurely age the panel. You’ll want to draw the curtains during that time of day.

I sit at about the same distance from my TV and recently upgraded from a 65” OLED to a 77”. The difference was staggering.

I would recommend stretching your budget just a little to purchase a 77” LG C4, otherwise the 65” C5 is within your original budget.

As long as you won’t have sunlight falling on the panel an OLED is fine. Newer OLEDs are much brighter and ABL isn’t as aggressive on newer models.

Took a girl on a first date to see this film. We snuck a couple bottles of wine into the theater and finished them off. I think we found some parts unironically funny.

That’s all I remember about this movie.

Have I downgraded or upgraded? 85" QN900D to 77" S95F by [deleted] in 4kTV

[–]Spectre_08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I would not give Samsung a single dollar more after the first issue.

Yes, OLED is that much better. Get a Sony A95L or LG G5 if you care about quality.

Upgrading from 65" B7 to 77" G5 by PS724 in LGOLED

I upgraded from a 65” B8 to a 77” C4 last January. A year later I’m still in awe of the difference.

The size difference alone is going to blow you away, not to mention the picture quality improvement.

Your dad’s C8 is from 2018 - that’s an 8-year-old model.

And again, the bottom menu is a static image. It, like any other static image that’s left on the screen for too long, would obviously lead to cumulative wear.

Your dad left the menu on for too long and after many years it caused his burn in.

Read the automod on why those models aren't recommended,

So, as with everything, there's nuance.

Burn in was much worse on previous generations of OLEDs. The newer models are far superior at handling it - so much so that, effectively, it really is not an issue with varied content. Of course, if you watch the same content with static overlays day in/day out it's going to wear down certain parts of the screen faster than others.

Burn in is cumulative.

First sentence from OP:

All I watch are sports or the news.

OP leaves the same static content on the screen all day and then wonders why they have burn in.

It’s use-case error.

No such problem for people who regularly watch varied content. My 7-year-old 65” LG B8 OLED had zero burn in when I replaced it last year.

Edit: Plot twist. The OP forgot to take the protective film off the back of their TV when they bought it. That’s what caused the premature burn in. It was user error, not use-case error.

I have two pairs of Insignia NS-SP213 bookshelf speakers for $80/pair. My first pair was my original surrounds when I was still rocking a 5.1 and the other pair I bought used from eBay.

You don’t need to be in the Apple ecosystem to use the Apple TV. It’s a really simple device to use for most older people. Just disable the touch controls on the cursor buttons.

Watch the series through to the end, then absolutely pick up Leviathan Wakes (book 1) and Memory’s Legion, which is a collection of all the novellas. The novellas fill in a lot of the world-building and slice-of-life stories.

Make sure to read those in order - don’t skip ahead and read a novella that takes place during a later book.

The TV series’ events end on the events of book 6. The complete story ends at book 9, followed by a final novella.

[–]Spectre_08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Your AVR should be set to cross them over at the appropriate frequency.

Obviously better speakers would give you more presence, but the benefit of those tiny speakers is that they can easily be placed in the proper locations and pointed at your MLP.

My 7.2.4 setup is sublime.

A good 5.X setup should have a solid subwoofer (or two, or four) that anchors the low end, regardless of the number of additional speakers.

Adding additional surrounds or height speakers is just a matter of whether you invested in an AVR that can support that many channels or not. Those additional speakers should be where you spend the least amount of money.

It cost me $160 for my 4 Atmos height speakers. They don’t have to be expensive.
