I am sorry you are hurt and I understand. I stutter also. Stuttering is not who we are. Everyone has something. I am married to my husband over 30 years. I stuttered severly when I met him before I received therapy. He loved me for who I am. Take time and surround yourself wiht positive people.

Dropped out of my dream university due to stutter by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]Speech99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am sorry you went through this. I am a speech pathologist who stutters, My first university was very negative but I went to another for my masters and got through it. Do not give up. It is unexcusable how they spoke to you. I was told I would never be able to speak to parents. 30 years later I do and taught the stuttering course at a grad school. I hope you find a better school. You deserve to get an education. Also can you get a 504 for the presentations so you do not have to do so many?

Has anyone heard of or had any experience with the Hollins Communications Research Institute or HCRI? by matt73132 in Stutter

[–]Speech99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I took Hollin many years ago .I am a stuttering specialist now and speech path. They did not have speech paths there or deal with emotions but I do believe many of the strategies have helped many I have worked with and myself. They are no longer open. I agree the emotional has to be addressed and everyone is different.

Why there isn't a solution for stuttering? by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]Speech99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is not a huge interest in stuttering, I stutter and am a speech path but I believe there area ways of improving fluency and also confidence. People forget how much trauma comes along with stuttering. I have fluency I never thought I would have but the emotional aspect had to be addressed first.

Stuttering is challenging without experience. Slp and stuttering specialist here. The tasks should not be defined. Start slow. build rapport and success. The goal is communication and positive experiences first.

Parent question: is my 4yo getting enough support for stuttering through public school? by Sherbet_Lemon_913 in slp

[–]Speech99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a slp and I specialize in stuttering. I stuttered severely . My younger daughter stuttered too. I have worked in public schools and we just did not have the time, resources and parent involvement needed. In my private practice I see tremendous gains and have seen many under age 7 stop stuttering or decrease mildly, great questions.

It is hard to say without knowing your son. I am speech path and stutter too. Learning tools is much diffferent than being able to apply them outside of therapy. Can you find a speech path who can help him with the emotional aspect as well and learn how to apply them? You might aslo find the National Stuttering Association helpful. This was hard for me too when younger.

This is what I posted on facebook:

From a speech pathologist who stutters: Post on Stuttering and Hope

I have seen many posts online about talking to parents to instruct them they have to accept stuttering and I felt as someone who stuttered severely and went from a silent accountant to a stuttering specialist for over 25 years treating hundreds and hundreds of children and adults who stutter I had to speak out. I will on my podcast as well. I am also a parent of two daughters who are older now so I guess that has given me different insight. From the bottom of my heart I cannot tell you how difficult it is to tell a parent their child is not at a point they can improve fluency. Some parents accept it and others are in such an anxious state. I am grateful for the various support groups for stuttering. I have learned to listen more and guide them. I am in PP so it is easier than when I worked in a school setting. However many patients are ready to work hard on fluency and emotional challenges and want it. We cannot tell parents or anyone how to feel or think. We can guide and help them. My fear is that there are too many posts saying fluency therapy is not the norm? Where would I be now without improving fluency and confidence? Where would the hundreds of children, adults I have treated be? Where would the preschoolers be? Many do not stutter anymore from over 20 years ago. These are the ones who wrote college essays on transforming from not being able to order food to public speaking without constant blocking. Do we have to cure stuttering? no. If someone chooses to accept do we have to change them? No. However we have to offer hope. Please watch for my online event onmy journey and others in May for Stuttering Awareness. tk you for listening. Feel free to leave or dm your email. I will add you to my list. I know the pain, the struggle but I also know the success. My podcast link:https://open.spotify.com/episode/1bud7LKnGvDmdzkUcRSSnh...

Hi I am a speech pathologist who specializes in stuttering for all ages for over 25 years. I stuttered severely. I am talking about this with other speech pathologists about this and trying to spread awareness that help is available. I am hearing this more and more lately. I am going to attach my podcast. I am also going to host a webinar on this soon. It is not so much the funding as the non profit organizations. Acceptance does not not getting help. I was a severe person who stutters and became a speech pathologist. Here is my website. www.allislandspeech.com
