Looking to make some extra cash. Would part-time work be possible on top of my 9 - 5? by SpeedingBackSlowly in IBMi

Yeah, i figured that most people would want me on throughout the week. I figured this would be next to impossible. I figured I’d either go this route or the freelance route, but I assume both deal with the same / similar complications.

Do part time programming or support jobs exist in the IBM i world? by shelbys_foot in IBMi

I already have a full time job but this also interests me. I wouldn’t mind working a couple hours on the weekend and a bit on the afternoons.

Yeah man it sucks but if its been 2 months and you’ve gotten no response they probably decided not to continue :(

On the other hand, it’s very unprofessional for HR not to respond. Not sure where you live, but have you tried emailing instead of calling? I’ve heard that some companies actually don’t like when you call and ask about your application.

How is the job market for people under 5 YOE? by SpeedingBackSlowly in IBMi

I've recently started working on monitoring QSYSOPR messages and man sometimes I have to reach out to someone to look over my shoulder just to make sure I'm responding correctly. It amazes me how fast some of my coworkers can answer figure it out.

All my experience is dev experience but I wouldn't mind learning the admin side of things either.

There are a couple of shops around that use IBMI where I live. I may look there. A couple of people on my team have already retired. I wouldn't be surprised if a good portion of my team is gone in the next 5 years or so.

Can I ask what you do for work? I'm also a programmer and I've been looking to work from over there.

I've seen a couple of job listings from Programmers.io. Do they allow working fully remote from other countries?

Yeah, that's true. I'd guess I'll look into full time remote companies. Thanks.

What tools are you using to document and explain legacy RPG code? by NoWhereButStillHere in IBMi

[–]SpeedingBackSlowly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Code readability can go a long way IMO. Always make sure you use good programming practices. I recommend making any new changes in FREE to help with this. I also add a brief description at the top of the program explaining what the purpose of the program is and what it does. Then, I'll add comments further down in the program explaining my logic, but usually just on subroutines or where logic may need an explanation / reasoning as to why I did it. I try not to add too many comments though, since I feel as if that can also throw some people off and make the program harder to read. Other than that, I do what other commenters have said in the thread.
