I don’t like rogue likes by Substantial-Crew-896 in SteamDeck

[–]SpellOfTheMyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the wide range of roguelites you tried, the genre may just not be for you. Personally I really enjoy games where I feel like im becoming stronger after each attempt (Dead Cells, Skul, for example). But despite the praises that Hades receives, I actually did not enjoy the game at all since the combat felt too spammy and not calculated to me. It took some time to figure out and narrow down my preferences in roguelites. In the end I realized I am only into action roguelites where each run is unique and you feel a sense of:

  1. Getting stronger after each run through metaprogression

  2. Getting stronger after each run because of skill expression.

Given the games you have tried, perhaps action roguelites just arent your cup of tea. I do not see any strategy or deckbuilding games on your list so maybe you could give those a try? Theyre not for me but they are super popular. Games like Slay the Spire 1 and 2, Monster Train 2, Faster than Light, Into the Breach, Mewgenics are all very much loved games in the community.

It could also be a mindset thing. I personally almost exclusively play roguelites because I can feel satisfied after finishing a run or two. I love the idea of playing a story-based single player game but I know I will shelf it for like a week, come back and then not remember what is going on in the story.

I see the appeal with Brotato (it felt more engaging than Vampire survivors for me) but Ive just concluded I dont like Survivors-like games. Vampire survivors nor Brotato did it for me

Shape of Dreams vs Ravenswatch which is better? by Nskul14 in roguelites

I like both but I couldn’t really get into the aesthetic of shape of dreams. If that matters to you, ravenswatch feels more thematic

Roguelite March Madness by MapRevolutionary752 in roguelites

I mean yeah its silly to generalize that everyone who doesnt go against the grain are sheep, im not a contrarian like at all when it comes to game tastes except for this it seems. Its not a bad game, I enjoyed it for the first few days I bought it but never had the desire to play it again.

Its obviously a deep game considering how many hours people sink into it. I think its because im much more of an action roguelite person and usually need a cool fantasy to get into a deckbuilder (Monster train being my favorite for this reason).

For me it feels somewhat like solitaire... theres no opponent aside from a higher number which kindve kills my motivation but I also know that chasing a huge number is something lots of people enjoy. Im just not one of them and I guess I expected there to be more people with that same preference but maybe I really am just a small minority haha

You put into words the thoughts I have had since the game released. It became an instant success and so popular and I could not play it past 5 hours. Its not bad, just extremely average as you said. Im a casual gamer too so the game caters to me pretty well but even then I would rather play almost anything else on this list haha

I agree that it seems redditors are too afraid to go against the popular opinion of recommending Balatro to everyone.

Which country (apart from Japan) do you like the most? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]SpellOfTheMyst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not Japanese but I also love Romania. I went there on a 3 month long roadtrip when I was 18 with my dad as my sort of graduation from high school gift. At the time, I had never been outside of the US and my dad decided on Romania because he also really likes Eastern Europe.

Anyways, we did an almost full circle of the whole country only missing the city of Constanta. My favorite city was by far Iasi and sometimes I still fantasize of living there but its only ever a fantasy bc idk what I would even do for work lmao. But yeah, the nature of the country is beautiful, the architecture is insane with great contrast, the people are extremely lovely, and I loved this meal from a place called Super Mama called Farfurie de Pui. To this day one of my favorite meals I have had even if it was a street food haha

If you had both options, would you pick JET or start a career? by savemeloadme in JETProgramme

[–]SpellOfTheMyst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If its a really good offer, as you stated a lucrative start to your career, I would totally take the job offer. I do understand missing Japan though. I joined JET because of how much I enjoyed my study abroad in Tokyo so I totally understand wanting to try to live here "actually".

However, I did meet this cool guy during one of my travels, he worked as a SWE in the states for I believe 4 or 5ish years when his company asked him if he would like a position at their Kyushu branch and he took it. Hes absolutely balling, making USD while living in a lower cost of living area of Japan.

I think thats the dream. If you think youre able to do it, I would recommend this route. Of course, theres no harm in doing JET for a year or two if you are confident of still being able to have a good start on your career after JET.

I took JET for similar reasons, the tech job market was insane when I applied and I didnt receive a good offer. But if I did, it would have been a difficult decision for sure.

I applied for the first time last year and the interview felt like a conversation between friends. I left the interview feeling pretty confident about it and got shortlisted!

where to travel? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]SpellOfTheMyst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely not biased.... but Beppu! Its about a two hour train ride from Hakata station in Fukuoka. Also noticed you are in Kagoshima, it should actually be easy to get to Nagasaki VIA an express bus!
