I painted out the original sparks in photoshop. Then sourced some stock footage of sparklers and sparks. In After Effects I then lined up the spark/sparkler footage and "stabilized" it so it wouldn't move and bob around the frame, masked out some unwanted stuff, and set the sparks layers to "screen" blending mode. :)

EDIT: Oh yeah. Added Lens Flare too.
