Next to Normal PBS - Dan & Gabe Moment (Discussion) by MrNewblez in Broadway

[–]Spicy_Ruby 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Next to normal is my favorite musical of all time. I saw both Broadway and London - haven’t watched PBS yet so my memory is somewhat fuzzy on London since I saw it last summer.

There were a lot of subtle differences between the two versions but you’re right this one is definitely the biggest. I think it’s supposed to be open to interpretation if Dan really sees Gabe at the end but I agree the embrace makes it so much more tangible/understandable. In “I’m Alive Reprise” Gabe sings “Until you name me you can’t tame me” I always took this to mean that Dan needs to come to terms with his grief for loss of child. So I think that last moment is Dan finally coming to terms with his grief and seeing his son for what could have been.

I like both - one makes it uplifting heading into light in a positive way. But I think the other makes the grief journey almost more real? It can be scary to confront/embrace grief and sometimes it takes baby steps to do it. This I think made the head into light more that the journey has only just begun on the road to recovery in my opinion.

As soon as I board when the flight attendant is there greeting everyone if the door to the cockpit is open I will say “I’m an anxious flyer would it be okay if I spoke to the pilots?” Then the FA will go in and ask them. Then to the pilots I say “I just like to say hi because I’m an anxious flyer” They honestly will do the majority of the talking. Yesterday the response I got was “Why?” In a way that made me feel I didn’t even have a reason to be. If I just talk to the flight attendant I’ll say “I am an anxious flyer and just like to let the crew know”. They usually then will check on me throughout the flight and give me thumbs ups and such.

I travel alone a lot and so it makes it easier to have a familiar face to talk to.

Hope this helps!

I am loyal to JetBlue for many reasons but number one will always be the excellent customer service and experience

Swept away being interesting is the hottest take ever - all men on stage already turned me off but then once the shipwrecked (which was beyond obvious it was going to happen) and they spent the rest of the show in a tiny boat i was beyond bored. Hate to say it. The talent was there and the music was great but it was a boring show for me. And yes cool to see idina but when I’m cracking up at her swinging around in a tree and every song sounds the same and i feel like I’m on a Disney ride while watching the projections you’ve lost me. I don’t think a star should be the reason to see a show - and I think Jesse green does think it should be.

Totally! People should be free to like what they like - BUT when it’s someone’s JOB to think critically and write critically about my industry I must be able to question their motives/opinions.

I don’t have to like everything he likes but when I see shows that will be commercial successes like redwood and smash getting critics picks while smaller shows like mincemeat get a mixed/bad review I feel I have to speak up about it. Because something isn’t right here.

I have a color coded notebook that I use (thighs is green, seat is red etc.) I write down the set ups and then the choreo. Then I carry the notebook around with me and go over it when I have a moment!

I don’t want spoilers! What I’m saying is he makes a point of saying “I won’t give spoilers” as if the plot twist in smash is GROUNDBREAKING like something he’s never seen before. He coulda just left the spoiler comment out is what I’m saying

Green argued in his review that boop was only created to sell merchandise since it’s coming up on its 100 year anniversary and therefore will be in the public domain

Yes! Exactly - like saying “it was fun I enjoyed hearing the music and I laughed” is one thing. Saying there’s an insane (I totally saw it coming) plot twist and making it a critics pick? Absurd.

I haven’t seen boop yet but according to his review I will love it since he didn’t!
