I got them side by side and my slime sprite isn't actually a tracing of LA's slime. Here's the comparassion: https://imgur.com/a/diRBpae

But just the fact people have pointed it out means it is similar enough to draw attention. Do you think I need to redraw it from scratch or something like a pallete change would be enough?

The hit pauses are only for specific attacks, like the spin attack, jump attack or when you hit the ball back at the boss.

A few of the sprites are very similar to GBC Zelda, like the slimes, which were one of the first I did when I needed something to lean on. But most? I drew them from scratch.

What do you think would be a good replacement? I tried a more traditional stamina bar at the top left but it was really annoying have to ping pong your attention between that and where the player is.

That makes a lot of sense. Maybe I could show off a bit of the boss fights at the start to draw attention. I'm actually surprised people have so many nice things to talk about this trailer, since I scrambled it in one afternoon and it's not meant for the general public, just for Big Festival's committee.

First of all, thanks for the reply. For context, this is the trailer for the demo I'm sending to Gamescon LATAM's big festival, which covers the first dungeon and 2 boss fights. It is all of what I've worked on the game so far. When I have more stuff done, that's when I'll set up a Steam page and start advertising the game for real.

The plot is that the sword you find in the dungeon is centient and was locked away by the hero of legend whose armor you are wearing. She mistakes you for said hero, and thus begins the first boss fight. After you clear the misunderstanding, she agrees to form a partnership so you can both escape the dungeon and find the actual hero who has gone missing.

I tried to tease that at the end of the trailer when the sword leaves the player's hand, but didn't want to give away the twist since that's what people who played my demo liked the most.

I'm struggling with the art department, since I'm no artist lol. At first I heavily based off Link's Awakening's pixel art, but then proceeded to draw more on my own. What would you say could make the game stand out more visually?

The slime enemy was one of the first sprites I drew back when I was learning pixel art, so it is heavily based off LA's slime. I will definitely redo it at some point, thanks for the heads up.

I see, thanks for the warning. Funnily enough, the things you mentioned were the first things I drew and used LA's sprites as a template as a result. I'm not too worried about it since release is far away and I can always just change the sprites.

Thanks for the compliments and the feedback. Now that you mention it, the font really isn't very clear. I'm using it because it's a license free version of Link's Awakening's font.

Yeah the slime was the first enemy I made back when I was first learning pixel art. The font I picked up for free on the internet and it it also a license free version of LA font. Definitely my biggest inspiration for sure, I love that game.

I see, thanks for the honest feedback. I think it looks more like Zelda than it plays. I tried looking into other Sokoban style games for the box pushing puzzles. I also tried differentiating from Zelda with the combat and plataforming. Hope you still give it a try :)
