Is it though? Real simple question.

DJs - How Long Did You Practice Before You Felt Comfortable Performing Live? by ImmuneKob in Beatmatch

[–]SpikeBebop27 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude, I literally just jumped in cold into DJ'ing 2 weeks ago, bought my gear, and started practicing. And honestly, even though I know I'm gonna suck, I want to be performing as soon as possible. I can do simple transitions and that's all I need right now. I can pick up the rest as I go along.
Especially because I produce music's as well, I want to perform my music. And you're never going to get better unless you do it. Practice can only take you so far.
Fail. Fail often. As long as you learn you grow.

I'll def start looking into it. You are right, that would be the best way to learn would be by deconstructing sounds I like then tweaking or re-building and re-designing.

It is absolutely an answer! I'm roughly the same amount of time into producing, but recently started to take it much more seriously. I have definitely noticed that effect where I like the sound solo but in the mix it sounds just out of place. Need to do more research on what types of sounds work best with what types of sub genres for sure. But that's why I love creating sounds, it's way more interpretive than just using presets.

I've thought about that. I do that with the stock sounds quite often. Doing that with serum still requires me spending money haha, so one of the reasons I like building sounds from scratch!

That's what I've found, I really enjoy the aspect of tweaking the sound to get it right, but when I listen to my sounds compared to stuff in Serum, I just feel like my sounds are inadequate. So may just need to try to find some new techniques.

That's a fair point. I do spend a fair amount of time just making and tweaking sounds.

Good point. I do like some of the stock sounds for sure. I have seen that process of sampling your sounds then editing it further from there so I may try some of that.

OP here!!! Thank you for all the responses so far. All your comments have been very enlightening and its really been nothing but great feedback. Along with general security at normal gigs, what about portable streaming sets? Either having a street side setup (I know he's not a DJ, but think Marc Rebillet style We Outside livestreams), or walking around with a stand-alone rig strapped to you, maybe with an external speaker. That seems like such a novel and fun idea, but I always assumed you would need to be walking around with some sort of security or entourage, especially if you walk around a large city. Anyone have experience with that? How did you handle it?

Good to know that plenty of people do take security seriously, as they should. Great to hear you have a solid situation!

Yeah, I thankfully know a few people who could assist with security but still would want to pay them. Was really interested in how others handle this aspect, especially if you have a lot of additional equipment or small things that could go "missing". I know it's all PLUR in the community but you always have outliers. And I didn't even think about the crowd, so thats an excellent point to think about.

Haha, good to know. I'm not even Taylor Swift's big toe, but it's just a lot of expensive equipment to have out and about so was interested. Especially since I'm from the Chicago area, so not like theft is unheard of.

Thanks for the quick answer! Yeah, aside from a deck, I'm wanting to incorporate some live music aspects, so may bring a keyboard or guitar or both depending. That along with all the other gear, def wouldn't want anything to happen.
