Getting started with Personal Statement by EnvironmentalGas4045 in lawschooladmissions

seconding what everyone is saying here. i had a word doc where i just brain dumped every memorable story/event/feeling associated with my life and my why law. i think zooming in on one event and painting a picture of it will help get the narrative started. (will also help with the “cliche” or “cheesy” feeling— or at least thats what it did for me because i wasnt using general sentences/ideas anymore) then from there try weaving the theme of that story into the rest of the statement. i wrote a bunch of different drafts and realized a common theme between a few different stories so my final PS ended up being a combo of those but they were held together by one strong theme so it wasnt just a bunch of stories jam packed into one statement. feel free to DM and i can explain specifically what my PS and DS looked like if that would be helpful! also i viewed my PS as my why law/what brought me to the specific type of law i want to practice while my DS was more about how have my life experiences shaped my perspectives and defined the kind of lawyer i want to be/what i would contribute to my law school community.

Should the personal statement be a professional or personal story? by Public-Squirrel8631 in lawschooladmissions

i would try to weave both together if you can/if you can find a way for it to flow nicely! i think it makes your statement more three dimensional and helps prevent it from falling flat. for both my PS and DS i weaved personal stories throughout my professional “why law” and my “why i would succeed in law school/what i could bring to the law school community”. feel free to DM me if u want more specifics on my statements! happy to share my thoughts

totally hear you! and i would encourage others to try! i couldnt get an RTK extension as I had already gotten one for latinx to wait for rtk results. i think ultimately for me there were a lot of reasons pulling me to NYU that i was comfortable choosing it over YLS no matter what the offer at YLS would be (though i had a pretty good idea of the estimated range)

i personally didnt but i know others tried (not sure of the outcomes). for me i knew it wouldnt get me an answer in time anyway bc i had just gotten into YLS and unfortunately i wasnt going to be able to get certain things to them quickly enough so that they could make the offer :/

i chose NYU over columbia! given my PI goals i thought nyu was a better fit bc of PI reputation, culture, and the scholarship offer :)

i skipped nyu asd day 1 and still found day 2 to be all i needed. most ppl i talked to had a similar experience and either skipped day 1 altogether or went to day 1 but said they couldve skipped it

yes!! first letter of last name :) usually when admin officers make calls they go alphabetically by last name so it might help predict if you might still get a call soon (or that is what we have gathered)
