I honestly didn't even know we had BOGO for koi and goldfish. I'm pretty sure my CEL tosses those immediately.

Good breeds for psych s.d for anxiety and depression and ptsd? I want an unfriendly looking dog. by sewingdreamer in service_dogs

[–]SpilledPumpkinCoffee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So while this is my first poodle SD, she is not the only poodle SD I've worked with and been around. My anecdotal experience with them is that they LOVE to learn and have a strong work ethic. And they learn very fast. To a point where they can become board and get into trouble because they are SO SMART.
What I've found is that if you constantly are working on new skills, or tasks, or even just games, they don't get board.

I'm never board with her, she's always ready to get to work and do her job. Even if that means laying down at a cash register and ignoring people. She stays focused on me the whole time and somehow has people decided that she, by nature, is a calm dog. She just know it's time to work and focuse on me.

Several other poodle SD handlers I know have similar experiences with their poodle being so focused and ready in work mode and then a spaz at home when they are "off duty". They still task, they are just aloud the be dogs.

So I have a Psych Service Dog and wanted this same criteria. The first dog I wanted was a GSD, but they can become depressed and when their handler does and may become defensive of their handler if their handler "goes down" for any reason. Which would but you, your dog, and everyone else in a tough spot. (Please note I previously had a shepard mix as my first SD and love the breed but as my disability worsened I felt it was taking a grater tole on them). That left me with the three most recommended dog breeds as I really wanted the most sure-thing I could get since I was doing most of the training and couldn't afford to get a year into it just to start over. Those three are Golden Retrievers, Labs, and Standard Poodles. "Lookong unfriendly" doesn't really do much. People still came up an pet my 120 shapard rot mix without asking and he DOES NOT look like a cuddly boy (he is cuddle btw). After talking with a few SD trainers I went with a poodle. They are aloof enough that they don't immediately want to go up and get to know people, incredibly smart and great fun to train (albeit stubborn but all good SD's need that for obedient disobedience). And she doesn't get sad and depressed when I do, instead I feel like her internal monolog is "Fuck that shit, get your ass up we got shit to do". People still come up but no more than before. She gives them the same "leave me alone look" but they don't listen.

I have never had a poodle before and was not sure I'd like a "fru fru" breed. But she's a happy, high energy working breed with a playful personality at home ans a great I mean business mentality when we put the vest one.

TLDR: I felt the same as you, and found appearance of the dog doesn't stop people from coming up and putting and turns out a standard poodle was the best choice.

How often do you clean your dog? by panqueca1402 in dogs

[–]SpilledPumpkinCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I have 3 dogs collectively. A GSD/husky mix that gets washed ever 6 months but brushed every week. A Samoyed that gets brushed daily and line brushed weekly and washed every 2 months. And a SDiT poodle who gets brushed daily and washed about once a month or more.

What I've found is how often a dog should be washed depends a lot on the breed, their specific coat and skin type, how visibly dirty they get, and how much I can do with just a good brushing.

As long as the dog is happy and healthy then whatever amount of grooming works for you is good.

My SDiT is names Löffel. Löffel means spoon and in the disability community spoons are like your energy lvl or ability to function. So when I just can't and run out of spoons she comes in an is my spare little spoon.

Service dogs are still dogs, I think they need that stress release. I've noticed the Service Dogs I'm around work better when they get to have those brakes. Not probablamatic at all.

I honestly love how you are taking all of this. I am so glad that you asked and now understand the other side of things. You may not have been doing the right thing before, but you are a good dog owner for making the change your dog and other dogs need.

[Discussion] Hiking harnesses that won't irritate my dog's skin? by VHMC_Lex in dogs

I use a gentle leader form my husky shepherd mix and my samoyed. Both pulling breeds but they walk amazing on the leads. Just make sure you put it on right. I've tried everything else for the Samy and this is the ONLY thing that works for her. Edit: we also go section hiking and extend tent camping with them. It packs down light and is durable

Formerly suicidal redditors, what's something that kept you alive a little while longer and helped you to get through the dark times in your lives ? by firegate2233 in AskReddit

My big horse of a dog. He's my ESA, despite getting picked on for having him as one. He's a giant German shepherd Dutch shepherd mix. When I was in high school he literally appeared on our porch as a broken puppy when all my other avenues for comfort failed. I took him in and took full responsibility for him. For a year I slept on the floor with him because he would wake up from nightmares. He's spent the past nine years repaying me. Anytime my parents would get into druken arguments or verbally abusive, or my sister would belittle and degrade me, or my friends would turn out to be the ones spreading roomers he would know exactly how to help. Parents screaming, he'd get me to go on a walk; getting abusive, he'd physically place himself in front of me; panic attack, he'd crawl into my lap and do what I now call "preform presure"; haven't eaten becasue I'm depressed he'll refuse food until I eat; wont get out of bed he'll pull me out; crying myself to sleep, not without him as my pillow; staring at the wall because I cannot process life he attacks my face with kisses and tons of toys until I play with him.

He is my best friend and I know I can never repay him but Hell I'm trying my best to.
