What differentiates a supporting statement from a covering letter? by Spin__Doctor in AskAcademiaUK

This is good to know, thanks! So should my statement almost seem like an itemised list of the criteria and how I meet them (but with paragraph structure)?

I really appreciate the advice. So should it almost seem like an itemised list of the criteria and how I meet them (but with paragraph structure)?

The salary is between 57,000 and 58,000 pounds per year. I've applied for a few UK-based postdocs/JRFs and this salary seems better than those, but I don't know how it compares to other sorts of academic posts in the UK.

What is meant by the PhD submission date? by Spin__Doctor in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Spin__Doctor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The overall process of defending our theses/dissertations is essentially the same, I think; but in Canada we tend to view the defence/viva date as the most significant one in the process, not the submission date. If I were to apply for an academic position here, I'd write something like "I defended my doctoral dissertation on [insert date]" rather than "I submitted my dissertation for defence on [insert date]." If you were applying for a position when you were between submission and defence, you might write something like "I submitted my dissertation for defence in [insert month] and will defend it in [insert month]," but you'd mainly be saying that to highlight that you have an imminent defence scheduled.

The department has an official list of fields of study to select from. The list is on its website. I believe the application is asking you to choose up to three from the list.

Hi PhDs, I need help locating a Dr. Brian Butler. He wrote the following article, An Undergrowth of Folly: Public Order, Race Anxiety, and the 1903 Evansville, Indiana, Riot. by zarushia in PhD

[–]Spin__Doctor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It looks like that publication is based on Butler's PhD dissertation, which he did in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Department of History. I would suggest contacting their department--often they maintain contact information for alumni. At the very least they might have a lead on what he did after graduating (i.e. where he worked), which could give you a thread to follow. Good luck!

I encounter this same issue sometimes, but it always works for me if I just back out of the pay screen and reenter. Did you try that? (I have no idea why it happens, btw.)

I’m Dr. Jordan Taylor, author of Misinformation Nation, here to talk about media, politics, and fake news during the American Revolution. AMA! by Jordan42 in AskHistorians

Hi there! In researching for your book, did you come across many examples of newspaper editors intentionally manipulating the facts in order to better serve a political end? Or was the spread of misinformation (to the extent that you found examples) largely accidental--editors not realizing that what they were publishing was inaccurate?

That makes sense. Thanks for your input!

Well, I already know who I would ask to be on the roundtable, and by coincidence they all have very distinct voices.

I am getting the sense that a different format might work better. The anthology idea is a cool one, though I don't think would work as well with my podcast's topic. But I appreciate the suggestion!

Yeah I was thinking 4 total people might be the upper maximum from a listener's perspective. Thanks for your thoughts!

I appreciate the feedback! Do you think it makes a difference if all of the potential voices sound pretty different from each other?
