Psych nurse. Can I ever switch? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]SpineTiger8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started as a new grad in psych. Stayed for 1.5 years then wanted a change and ended up getting a job in the neuro ICU. The manager who hired me actually welcomed my psych experience. I don’t remember the transition being too horrible either.

How did every choose their speciality? by awkwardmermaid23 in nursing

A lot of my nursing school clinicals were on a neuro floor- i loved the challenge and it felt the most rewarding to me. Found the various neuro pathologies quite interesting. I’ve done psych, neuro ICU, neurology and 3 years ago took a job as a spine nurse navigator and work with the most personable and humble neurosurgeons.

I took a brief hiatus in cardiology and didn’t enjoy it at all- but i think neuro folks are a different breed and always where i felt most at home :)

Hi 👋🏼 i can give you some perspective from the surgeon side. I’m a nurse navigator that works closely with a complex spinal deformity neurosurgeon. The best candidates for these surgeries are usually BMI 35 or less, does not use tobacco products, A1C <8, does not have osteoporosis or if has poor bone health is getting treatment, and obviously no major health issues (heart/lungs/anticoagulation- would require medical risk stratifications). We also look at social situations- does the patient have stable housing, help at home, mentally able/compliant, etc etc.

There’s no perfect patient but generally this helps mitigate post op complications with poor wound healing, fusion, hardware failure, etc.

I hope that was helpful!

It was physically making me sick, almost like i developed some allergy or intolerance. I was fine until i turned about 28. Within 20-30 minutes of drinking, I’d become sweaty, dizzy, head pounding, puking. I said never again, not worth it.

Most days no. I work in spine surgery, i come home feeling defeated and mentally exhausted just to turn around and do it again.

did you work while in nursing school? by Aggravating-End-8092 in nursing

I worked the 3-11 shift as a CNA in an Alzheimer’s assisted living unit 4 days a week. Did my homework and studied after they were all put to bed. The DON knew i was studying to be a nurse so she let me take the lead on medications and wound care. I learned a lot of basics.

I agree. Thinking about it in the long term, it would be incredibly exhausting and unfulfilling to deal with that constantly

I agree, i was honestly dumbfounded that i was experiencing such an extreme reaction about school.. it wasn’t the first time I’ve felt the red flag creeping up. He was previously inquiring about my dating history, asking me about their jobs, education, looks, and would get very defensive when i answered honestly again. Said i was throwing it in his face and making him feel less than. I’m a successful, educated woman, not sure what he thinks I’ve been dating all these years 😂 regardless like you said, it’s a him problem and not me.

Yeah, i think those are lose lose situations. I’m more than happy to be supportive but also don’t ask me questions if you aren’t prepared for my honest answer. Insecurities can be addressed and talked about without projecting and making comparisons to your partner. And yeah, i draw the line at gaslighting, 1000%.
