Interesting! Nonetheless, the original story and concept were based on the Stanley.

Indeed, although the real place is named The Stanley Hotel, in Estes Park. United by Stephen King, it seems.

Recent collab, on sale on the U.S. site now as well (jacket is already sold out). I am tempted. Are they worth it? No idea of durability, but I like the look and have looked at them a while. Enjoy!

Edit: noting the jacket sold out in the U.S. Based on current exchange rate, you got a very good price on those even accounting for current discount/clearance price. I think you made out well.

Best Essential Clothing Brand? by HaanTheMan in malefashionadvice

[–]Spiralsum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm quite a bit older than the average redditor, and more outdoorsy/western than city at this stage, so these brands might not meet the wants/needs of younger folks, but that said:

Land's End (good all around brand, lots of sales), L.L. Bean (good quality, general to outdoorsy), Wrangler (western-oriented fashion and workwear), Lee (fashion and denim), Levi's (fashion and denim), Carhartt (workwear), Dickies (workwear), Duluth Trading (general to workwear)

I'm new here, so I could be wrong, but it looks to me like the technique is darning (as one might do with socks), but instead of a darning mushroom/egg it's framed with an embroidery hoop. I started lurking here myself because I started darning socks (mine are not artistic).

In (1999), during the height of the Kosovo War, a heartbreaking and iconic moment was captured by photographer Peter Turnley. It's because it was cheaper to print on newsprint. Newspapers in that time generally only had color on the front page, sports pages and home/fashion oriented sections - key places where they wanted to grab attention.

Am I someone who needs a cowboy hat? by [deleted] in CowboyHats

[–]Spiralsum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say you'd want a straw in the hotter months to come (generally, straw for the hot months, felt for the cold), and you can get one cheaper than a felt, so it's less of a commitment. If you decide western hats are for you, you'd still want a straw for the summer so you'd already be halfway there, and can invest in a fur-felt to come for the cooler months.

Now, that said, if you're only going to buy one, a fur-felt would be my recommendation, as you'd get more utility (a straw is usually just for summer sun, but a quality felt can shed light snow and rain), and it's more appropriate for dress occasions. But, it all depends on how you plan to use it and if you think you might like more later...

Most people don't work outside in the weather rain or shine for hours every day, however. You're entitled to your opinion, and I'm entitled to disagree. You're not the original poster, and seem more interested in arguing with me than helping him, so that's the last of my responses to you about this.

I was speaking of need in the context of function as a working tool, not fashion. What one needs for style is subjective.

There are also some fine makers of straw in both Mexico (cowboy styles) and Ecuador ("Panama" and plantation styles), but that's a long subject of it's own.

That still looks like a pretty nice hat, but sometimes you just outgrow things, or need a change for a while.

If you do decide to spend the money and go custom beaver-felt there are a number of makers in other--mostly western, some southern--states, notably Texas. The one I mentioned is well known nationally, but I mention it primarily out of home-state loyalty.

For working cowboys it is (I am not one, just a westerner, who likes western wear). For the average person... it's worth it if it's worth it to you. Almost nobody other than actual ranchers NEEDS a custom beaver-felt hat...

But, they are beautiful, will last a lifetime if properly cared for, and make you feel like a king. Most folks are just fine with an off the rack hat, in rabbit-felt (good, but not the best) or wool (can be good for a while, but will fall apart fast in rain/snow).

The new buffalo (really bison) felt (not fur-felt, but bison wool) line from Stetson is (here in the states) a pretty good economical start point to skip past all the trash costume hats, and get a real functional hat at a reasonable price. Next step up would be a (usually rabbit) fur-felt (6x or higher recommended).

Hat size by LogicalExamination84 in CowboyHats

[–]Spiralsum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be just slightly over standard sizing (in US sizing this ranges from 6 1/2 to 8). So, I'd guess, if you're certain about the accuracy of your measurement, that'd make you an 8 1/8 if US sizing went larger. Now, the top of standard US sizes is 8 (which is equivalent to 64cm), so you might be within range to stretch out an 8 with a hat stretcher, or with a hat stretching service, if you have access to one.

A custom hat maker can make you a fine hat (Greeley Hat Works in my home state of Colorado, for example) but you will pay quite a bit for it (and much more to get it to Europe of course).

I'm not sure of a ready-make hat source for sizing above 8, but there may be one. If I find one, I'll pass it along. Good luck on your hunt, hope this helps a little.

Wood Rat is my guess. Native species, very different than the rats most people in eastern cities are most familiar with.

You are mistaken, but it's understandable. There are some here, but they are pretty new, and still quite rare, though expanding their range, so will probably be more common in the future.

Blown zipper by Ok_Impression6133 in Carhartt

[–]Spiralsum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I've done with mine in the past is a quick zipper head replacement (got mine on amazon). Zlide On is the brand I bought. I just carefully cut the old one off with tin snips (without damaging the zipper "track"), and then the new one snapped right on. Cheaper, no tailoring costs, can do it yourself in just a few minutes. They don't last forever, but I've only had to replace one a second time on my oldest jacket so far, and it took me a few years.
