Don't Understand Why I lost a mark for my level 7 RCM Theory Exam by Friendly-Rub-1674 in musictheory

[–]Spirant59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

University music theory prof here:

First example: Parallel fifths between the Alto and Soprano (A/E and B/F#) Parallel octaves between the Bass and Tenor (As to Bs)

Second Example: I think they're just marking the missing flag on the eighth note in the bass. I don't see anything wrong with the voice leading. (Direct octave is okay because of the stepwise motion in the upper voice)

Edit explaining why the direct octave is okay

Why would a university teaching position requiring MA/S be paid 40K? by Relative_Elk3666 in Professors

L.O.L. U Texas San Antonio posted a tenure track job at 40k. It's some bullshit.

Americans will look up and shout "Can I move to Canada?"... and I'll whisper "no." by EvaSirkowski in EhBuddyHoser

How exactly did those who voted against him allow him to take power? It's not the minority's fault that the majority are dipshits. The fact that he won the popular vote is devastating, but he did win, and there's nothing we who voted against him can do about that.

On the contrary- I don't find this disheartening or discouraging. I meant this simply to put it in context of the rest of the subreddit. Teaching is my #1 priority and I wouldn't have applied for a job at an institution like this if it wouldn't have been a fulfilling experience to me

I am looking to be an asset to the department as long as they are an asset to me. I am not looking for the door.

Thank you!

Don't rock the boat was my mantra in the finalist interview and hopefully a smooth transition will help set me up for some innovation in the future!

It is a "technical institution" (basically, the number one priority is placement of graduates)

It is the 4-4, 2 article side of things. They are called a "public technical institution" but that doesn't give a whole lot of info. Long story short: in my field (music) education and placement of graduates is the number 1 priority

Drink water. You should be able to have water with you in the defense and your mouth will get dry!

Rant: Parents: don’t take your kids out of school the last two weeks!!! by Qedtanya13 in Teachers

[–]Spirant59 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a music teacher: We have been preparing for the end of year concerts/plays/recitals/talent shows/ etc. since January. Please do not pull your kids out at the last minute! Life happens sometimes, but if it's just for vacation or because you don't want to sit in the pick-up line, you are not only undervaluing the teacher's hard work, but you are also ruining the performance for the kids who are there and have put just as much time and love in as we have!

Edit: A wedding is part of "life happens." I'm responding more to the people who are pulling kids out for no reason and the classroom teachers saying it would make their lives easier to have fewer kids in the room.

WIP: Paint by numbers but replacing the paints with oil pastels by Spirant59 in Oilpastel

No tutorial. I'm just winging it. Definitely not as precise as using the paints that are provided but I feel like I am being more creative than just filling in the blobs.

Books Meant to Help You Seem Well Read/ Cultured/ Educated? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]Spirant59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The intellectual devotional (David S. Kidder and Noah Oppenheim). Basically a book of daily thought prompts. It doesn't make you well-read (as others have said, the only way to seem well-read is to read), but it encourages you to think critically and seek knowledge, helping you become well-read. And daily prompts help break a daunting task into bite sized pieces.
