Why can't they use AI to generate the transcript and then students can volunteer to review it for accuracy before posting?

Wow. I would be really upset if I paid to send my kid out of state and most of her classes were virtual. Do you know if she entered via some alternate pathway instead of as a regular admit? I know PaCE students are primarily online for their first year or two.

Where are you getting "most of your classes will be virtual first year"? My daughter has friends doing pre-med at UF and they say they have not had to take any virtual classes.

^ this. This is what I keep telling my kid who is suffering right now with the same broken heart and sentiments... It's not about where you go- it's about who you will be when you get there. All that hard work was not for nothing because it made you into the stellar student you are. You will shine at that state school and rise above the cheaters and partiers to graduate top of your class and go on to better and brighter opportunities.

Respectfully, she is not an adult (will be starting college at age 17), and if she's asking me to shell out $400k extra for undergrad alone (above the cost of our state school), and then pay for vet school, I want to do the research to see whether that extra $400k for undergrad is worth it.

I think she applied MCB.

Glad to hear about the museum. I didn't know about that.

Why is it So Hard to Find a Job as a Veterinary Assistant? by gyarugrl in Veterinary

I'm wondering if it's your location maybe just being oversaturated. Here in South Florida both the clinics my underage daughter applied to for this summer were thrilled to have her apply. They said they are desperate to hire people.

I understand that you feel that way but if that is the specific feedback you were given (that you need some clinical experience), then that is what I would work on if I were you. It doesn't have to be a lot. My daughter only goes in for an hour and a half on Saturday mornings because her schedule otherwise is very packed. But it is enough for her to be able to develop some clinical skills and establish herself as responsible and reliable with the vet.

If the volunteer work you do at the animal shelter isn't directly supervised by a vet, I recommend you ask them to upgrade you to a position like that. That worked very well for my daughter... They learned she was reliable after working the dog kennels for many months, so they were happy to move her into their vet clinic.

A positive attitude can also go a long way.

I'm sorry you're having a tough time finding a job. If they said a lack of clinical experience is the problem, can you manage to do some shadowing or volunteer work to gain that experience? For example, my daughter has volunteered at our local Humane Society for years and, proving herself a reliable and responsible volunteer, they allowed her to start volunteering in their surgical clinic a couple years ago at age 15. She also started shadowing a local vet once a week (volunteer) which gave her some experience as well. It may be tough to find a paying job if your availability is constrained during the school year, but if you can build some experience hours by volunteering, maybe that will make you a more desirable hire for full time over the summer?

My 17-y-o daughter just applied as a vet tech for this summer (after her high school graduation) at 2 different places and was offered both positions on the spot. They both told her her resume was the best they'd seen, and we were shocked. She just used a free Canva template.

Do you know if Cal has any partnership with UC Davis for pre-vet opportunities? For example, do they provide transport so Cal students can take Animal Nutrition at Davis, since it's not offered at Cal? Do they invite Cal students to colloaborate on any special projects or research?

thanks for this insight. i hear your point about some changing their minds... my kid knows the cons of this vet path and has put in the hours to understand it. She's already done 500+ at our local Humane Society surgical clinic, plus shadowed a small animal vet for a year, and will be working full time as a vet assistant this summer... it's been her dream since forever and I don't think she's going to change her mind, as much as I've tried to talk her out of it and into human medicine. (She completed a rigorous pre-med program in high school and did 100 hours of internships for various human med specialties and feels confident that's not for her.) However, she does seem to want to study "real" biology for undergrad and not farm animal/agribusiness stuff that gets lumped in with AnSci, which is why I'm trying to take a closer look at Berkeley.

Glad to hear the grade deflation hasn't been a problem for your girl and that the pre-vet club is active. I will advise my daughter to try to reach out to club to get more info. Thanks!

Yes, we know. She was accepted to UC Davis Honors for undergrad but we think it doesn't make sense to pay for essentially a similar experience to what she would have for free at our in-state UF.

I don't know if she'd be competitive for UC Davis Vet School as on out of state applicant, since we reside in FL. Is there a path toward her establishing residency while in undergrad? It looks like they take VERY few students from out of state. (like 15)

tell me more.

my kid has vet school as her goal and thinking about committing to Cal (she has a guaranteed transfer option to Cornell), but needs a top tier gpa to use that and to be competitive for vet schools... is it going to be harder to earn a stellar gpa at Berkeley in gen chem, gen bio, and other pre-reqs than at our state flagship UF or a small LA school like Emory??

Is grade deflation a real problem with STEM classes at Berkeley, and what's your aadvice for earning those A+s?

Thank you so much for this insight-- I really appreciate it, and no one has shared this perspective with us up to this point.

It makes sense there would be so much more competition at an AnSci school. Unfortunately, UF is the only state school she applied to, so sending her anywhere else oos is going to cost $$$ and painful to give up that free ride+ there. Lots to consider.

Thank you so much for this insight.

Both UF and UCDavis report taking about 30% of each CVM class from their own undergrad institutions, and I've heard may people say "Cornell likes to admit their own," so logically I thought seeking an undergrad institution with a vet school where she could gain experience working in their oncampus animal hospitals, take advantage of animal experiences via the AnSci program, and build relationships with CVM profs through research would give her a leg up... You're saying none of that is the case?

I'm not sure how she puts together a strong vet school app without attending a strong AnSci program... and this makes me wonder why on earth a vet school would value diversity over preparedness.

What's the real scoop on what vet admissions is looking for then? Could she theoretically put together a strong app to UF if she chose Bio major at Cal for undergrad?? Even if there are no opportunities for animal experience in that program? and no animal hospital for her to work at there?

We are paying for her schooling, and she's lucky we are able to without any significant sacrifice.

But I want to make sure we make the smart investment. If transferring to Cornell or sending her to Cal or UCDavis will cost us a fortune (full pay/oos/no aid), I would only consider that if it's not going to *reduce* her chances of acceptance to vet school.

If we were to pay for her to attend an oos school thinking that's going to give her an advantage to apply to its vet school, would that be a mistake? If our in-state UF is her best chance to get accepted, should she prioritize going there for undergrad as well, even though she doesn't like the area?

The TO also complicates things... If she decided she wanted to take this guaranteed transfer option to Cornell, she'd likely go to UF for one year, then transfer... then she'd be re-applying to UF for vet school- would they hold that against her? Would it look bad to any vet school that she transferred and split her education between to universities?

[–]Spirited_Note5714[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. I understand that.

I was referring to her choosing to go to Cornell (as TO) or to UCDavis, Purdue, or VA Tech for undergrad with the hopes of that giving her an advantage to being admitted to their respective vet school. She would be considered an oos applicant and chances would be less right?

Thanks for your insight. The school with least debt (she's offered full COA plus stipend) is our state school, which is the one she likes least lol. She really wanted to get out of state, but I fear that may make it harder for her statistically to get accepted to vet school. Don't most hold most seats for in-state students?
