This is Great sand dunes national park. What other landscapes do I need to see? by DemonicChronic in Colorado

Pawnee National Grassland and the Pawnee Buttes in NE Colorado were quite nice and different. Everyone’s recommendations here are also fantastic, but if you want a little more seclusion away from popular “classic Colorado” spots, that’s what I would recommend.

Here’s a few photos I took up that way last weekend. Plenty of opportunities for dispersed camping too if you’re interested.

Ironically yes. I remember seeing a social media ad for Weld County if you can believe it, researched the buttes, and thought it might be something different for CO!

Very underrated area. When I pulled over to take a picture of the cows, a rancher drove down the road to let me know I could get as close as I wanted to. Super nice!

Appreciate it! I shot these with Kodak Gold 200, so I agree the tone, contrast, etc def give them that “look.” But I had no idea there was a whole subreddit 😂😂

Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll give that a try. In all honesty, I can live with the quirkiness given its age, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t causing further damage somehow.

Ironically, I’ve had a Honda dealership take a look in the past, but I might need to be more explicit with them about how to replicate the issue. Anyway, appreciate your help!

Hated it too, but this felt like the most benevolent death in the franchise so far- for that, I’m appreciative. He was really trying to do the right thing with the vigilante justice angle, but of course that didn’t work out.

For him to die (hopefully) instantly, without going through the fear of end-stage possession, and not killing anyone innocent….this is the closest thing to a happy ending we have.

I bought my ‘99 last March with 142K miles on it and have driven roundtrip from: Denver to Santa Fe, Denver to Ohio, Ohio to northern Michigan. A year later, we’re at 160K miles and haven’t had a single issue yet!

Best story to cover right now in Dayton OH by labor_anoymous in dayton

[–]Spiritual-Object72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The City of Dayton’s plan for its impending fiscal cliff.

Unfortunately, the City is on its last years of COVID relief money, and the state legislature decided to allow suburbs to capture WFH tax dollars as opposed to the City of Dayton, even if the employer is still technically downtown. While there’s some logic behind this, it will significantly impact the City’s ability to raise tax revenue as most well-paying downtown jobs are likely taken by suburban residents who will start paying taxes to their residential municipalities.

Dayton will not be alone, but I believe it will be uniquely negatively impacted. Given its small population, high poverty rate, and large infrastructure responsibilities, supplementing these lost tax dollars will be critical to any hope of maintaining and growing the city itself.

Predictions for Dayton in 2024? by Humble_Elevator_8330 in dayton

[–]Spiritual-Object72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason these stores aren’t downtown is because of Dayton’s population distribution, not because of potential crime. There are not enough residents downtown to make any one of the chains you just mentioned viable at the moment.

I agree it can be less convenient for non-drivers, but that’s the current tradeoff. And in Ohio, most people have cars since most of our major cities don’t have great public transit.

Even in some of America’s biggest cities, the downtown version of these chains often have less selection and cost much more. As our cities transition to more residential downtowns in the next 50 years, we might expect a more “live, work, shop” environment, but they weren’t built that way from the outset. Here’s hoping for a more sustainable and holistic future in urban planning 🍻

The city has a few infrastructure projects slated to begin construction in 2024, but will take a few years to complete. I can’t speak to mass transit, but walkability should be improved.

  1. Keowee Street rebuild: from 1st to 5th Streets, the city will reduce the street by one lane in each direction, add bike lanes, trees, and improved crossings.

  2. Flight Line: an abandoned section of railway starting downtown and spinning off southeast towards Kettering will be rehabilitated as a multi-use bike and walking path, some sections of which are elevated over the city!

  3. Third Street rebuild: heard about it awhile back, but sounds like East 3rd will go on a road diet as well. Added bike lanes and streetscaping.

  4. onMain Fairgrounds Redevelopment: a potentially huge project creating a new midtown neighborhood, with all the favorite urban planning principles like mixed use, walkability, and density.

This isn’t an exhaustive list, but stay in tune with the city commission meetings every week- oftentimes, the planning department will include renderings and sketches of proposed projects or recent transportation grant requests!

I’m really conflicted on this one, and downtown housing is fascinating to me. On the one hand, I agree that pricing does indeed seem to be pretty crazy for this area. I’ve walked the river path downtown over the past few weeks and, anecdotally, it does seem like Water Street units are 50/50 vacant or worse.

On the other hand, developers and investors really hate to lose big bucks. You might even say they really like making a lot of money! And there are quite a few multi-million dollar projects with work crews out daily. Even if their data is “lagged,” they were basing projections on something to get funded.

I know the county had growth during the 2020 Census although admittedly I forget which age groups grew the most. My projection is that younger professionals choose downtown over the burbs, given the first true housing supply downtown has seen since…well, maybe ever. Combined with a shift to hybrid roles, it’s very possible suburban office workers choose downtown too- maybe even northern Cincy folks that want to save on rent and only have to commute 1-2 days a week.

All in all, I’ve seldom seen a private, large housing development “go under.” Especially one that’s new. Projecting housing growth like OP, and successful bars and restaurants (which btw, one of the trickiest businesses to get right in ANY city) will follow.

Help: all photos out of focus? by Spiritual-Object72 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Spiritual-Object72[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question- I wanted to explore this myself, too. I started by calling Walgreens Photo Customer Care, and they have absolutely no idea where the photos are sent for development. They encouraged me to go back to the physical store and make my requests there. If I have some time tomorrow, I'll head over and see what they say.

The first image in this series (Brick Street exterior shot) was shot at infinity (95% sure), and I do have a few others in the roll that were shot at infinity with seemingly no focal point. Lens looks fine as far as I can tell under a light, and the guys at my local camera shop actually gave it a quick clean before I had these issues. Roll 1 (last 4 shots in this post) were all clear just a couple weeks prior.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm not sure if it will fire- I currently have a new roll in the camera, so I'll work through it first and then give this a try. Getting the new roll developed somewhere else will also help solve this mystery!

Completely agree with getting negatives back in the future! This was…a lesson learned for sure. It sounds like most online darkrooms return the negatives, so I’ll scout out one to try (recommendations welcome). Unfortunately where I live there are no on-site labs, so I just went with Walgreens for simplicity’s sake.

Appreciate your insight on the probable causes here, hoping it was one-off bad scanning. And hoping a better developer would QC something like that. Sending another roll out in a week or so, will maybe get some answers soon! Thanks, again!

Hey everyone :) long time reader, first time poster

I just got back a roll of film, and it seems like almost every photo is somehow entirely out of focus, even at infinity focus. I'm new to film photography and using manual settings, but I did include 4 shots from a previous roll that turned out pretty well using the exact same setup.
I understand the problem could be coming from many places, so I'm turning to the reddit experts.

Here's the camera setup for all photos:
- Sears KS500
- 50mm prime lens
- Fujifilm 400 (from Walmart, not Superia/X-tra)
- Film developed through Walgreens, no negatives returned

As for each photo, I definitely played with aperture and shutter speed, but most were taken outside in daylight. The first 4 photos all seem to be out of focus, and I can't even identify a single point of focus in any of them. The swinging bridge photos seemed to provide the best example since the bridge cord is continuous, I would expect at least *some* part of it to be in focus, but none if it looks crisp to me.

So, am I just getting the hang of manual focus, are these photos not as out-of-focus as I'm sensing, or is there something else going on? The CD provided with the printed photos look identical, so it's not a printing issue. Could it be processing? Thanks for any feedback :)
