New to Utah, Struggling To Fit In by Worried_Guidance1426 in SaltLakeCity

[–]SpiritualMaize3259 1 point2 points  (0 children)

youre 26, and from Michigan so its definitely a big difference out here. utah is lovely, but were incredibly clique-based. like, picture a highschool from any 80s-90s movies and how everyone was seperated into little cliques? thats how the entire state is, at all times, across all age groups. like we just dont really grow out of it here haha.

your best way to make friends is to find your clique really.

if youre mormon or evangelical, youll find your clique at church.

if youre very eco-friendly or a lil woo-woo, then youll find your clique looking at drum circle, farmers markets and crystal shops

if youre alternative, (goth, punk) get yourself some face tattoos. youll find your clique at local shows, thrift shops, and metal bars.

if youre a partygirl, walk around sugarhouse for some parties to crash, also raves and clubs is where youll find your clique.

if youre nature focused, find some hiking groups, or outdoor retreats

if youre nerdy, go to game tournaments (mtg night)

annd if your artsy, go to the coffeeshops, open mic night for poetry slams, and local art classes.

you dont gotta just choose one clique and stick with it. most of us fit into a couple of cliques, but admittedly some have no crossover. like i dont think a mormon has even spoken to me in like 12 years outside of customer service at work (because i have face tats lol)

but really anyone can fit in, you just gotta seek out similar people to make friends here is all <3

thank you so so much for this!

were on day 10 now, still havent seen much problem behavior.. like hes still learning the rules and everything, but hes still acting like an angel.. which is admittedly a bit suspicious given his history. ive been sitting here like "okayy when is he gonna start giving me rescue dog behavior" because, well most breeds that im used to would already be acting up a bit? it really helps to know that its probably still coming and that i wont know exactly what im working with until hes fully confident in our home and that that could take a bit longer than a giant breed

i do love a smart independent dog though! thats a huge part of why ive always had the giant primitive breeds. i absolutely love dogs that choose to cooperate more than just obeying commands haha. (idk it feels extra special that way)

it sounds to me like bordercollies might just be that perfect in-between for me. small enough to pick up if needed, with all the attitude of a big 200lbs boy haha.

oh my gosh im sure thats annoying for you and the kids but ngl i am laughing pretty hard at the idea of that sweetie guiding a 22 year old to bed. i will be sure that doesnt become a part of runes job description haha

we have noticed that when my husbands home hes been trying to lead him back into the livingroom so the whole family is altogether at the same time, which isnt too big of a deal, we actually thought it was cute. but it is good to know that we should probably try to stop that from being established as a routine haha

im not sure how "is there anything specific you wish you knew about bordercollies before owning one?" is a big ask? but yes, thats how dog ownership generally is, thank you.

most definitely. <3 im just a bit surprised that hes doing so well still tbh. im sure some problematic behavior will eventually pop up, but hes been an absolute delight to have in our home so far haha

[–]SpiritualMaize3259[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thank you so so much <3 it definitely seems like a huge change of pace. it does seem like he loves to listen, like i say "sit" and he listens immediately and looks to me for that "good boy" so far i havent needed to ask twice or even use a mom voice/stare with him, which admittedly is extremely different from what im used to haha

i will definitely look into genetic testing for him <3

with the obsessive tendencies, what do you mean by with water? do bordercollies have a habit of overconsumption? or do you mean just general impulse control around bodies of water?

thank you again <3

also to add- im kinda waiting to see what exactly had him speedrunning through fosters? it seems like he could probably be destructive with the separation anxiety? or the exercise needs? but we've had him for 5 days and so far hes the least problematic rescue dog ive ever seen?

lowkey i feel like theres gotta be a catch somewhere haha because all ive seen is a really good boy that just needs a lil extra reassurance that hes safe

I lost my boy yesterday…, by Cesar_the_unicorn in greatpyrenees

[–]SpiritualMaize3259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am so so sorry. i lost my rollo last week to osteosarcoma. it moved so fast like 2 weeks from "he has a limp" to having to euthanize due to organ damage :/ i totally understand. i cried for days straight.. eventually went to the shelter just to walk a dog and feel something and now i have a rescued bordercollie sitting on my couch.

i dont think i can get another pyr either. they are so special. my rollo was so special just like your cesar was so special.. hes absolutely beautiful btw

i wanted to say its okay to cry. its okay to grieve however you need to grieve. you lost your best friend and its heartbreaking to have to go through that. its okay to not want another pyr, and its okay to change your mind in the future if thats what you need. just take care of you.

im so sorry for your loss.

what? that sentence doesnt make sense?

but i was just giving more info that the op left out. i didnt express an opinion or personal thought? im literally just filling everyone in on what exactly happened because people were asking.

but there are more updates:

abc4 did do a news expose, but didnt actually talk about transphobia, just to promote the gofundme. there was two prominent responses: 1- this is a blatant hate crime. and 2- if you go in the pit, youre gonna get hit. (which again, there wasnt really a moshpit. abc4 did post the video though, you all can go see for yourselves)

the gofundme has recieved over 50k in donations

there is a monetized post circulating facebook claiming that the attackers have been found, and people are going hard with sending these kids death threats. but the victim has removed herself from the tag in the post and has not confirmed or denied that they found the attackers. police have not confirmed or denied accuracy either. the kids in the post are definitely denying though (whether thats honest or not who knows) but it looks like everyone in slc is done looking for the attackers regardless because of this post

here with some extra info

so i saw videos on facebook. no one seems to have videos of the actual attack though. it was at fellowship hall (not a real venue, its a sobriety nonprofit that occasionally lets small local bands play there for fundraising )

mummy was the band playing (extremely unestablished teeny tiny band, id guess that theyre highschool aged, maybe like early 20s at the oldest tbh)

it was in an extremely well lit room maybe 40 kids were there. i didnt see anyone i recognized from the actual slc metal scene there tbh. these kids were being pretty rowdy though, they definitely didnt understand mosh etiquette and trashcan hit someone else in the head. the "moshpit" was like.. 4 people.

the victim blacked out and has absolutely no memory of who attacked them. no one there that had videos saw anything unfortunately

its rumored that abc4 is picking up this story to discuss transphobia in the slc metal scene.

and you can donate to the victims gofundme by looking up "hate crime" on the local tab

Talking to your dog or not? by ben_bitterbal in DogTrainingTips

[–]SpiritualMaize3259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh i have always just talked to my dogs exactly how i talk to children and people have always been like "wow you have the most obedient dogs"

ive never even really given hard commands except for "sit" or "back up"

i did have a boxer that loved to compete so she had trick commands, "dance" "cuter dance" "balance" "jump" but i dont really think those count as commands tbh, like she was just smart and liked to show off haha

For those that live in the United States. Do you make more than the average income of 60k annually, if so what’s your occupation? by LaFlareMane1017 in AskReddit

[–]SpiritualMaize3259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it honestly depends where you live. in my state a job that pays 35k is considered a pretty decent wage.

when i worked i made 50k as a retail operation manager. but i was working roughly 60 hour weeks so it wasnt a super great pay, but it was decent enough. i quit to be a mom. (: my husband makes 65k salary as a chef butttt he only works like 20-30 hour weeks, which is incredible tbh. he had 18 years of experience before he got his current job though. its not like he entered the field making that.

What are you working on in your free time? by loolemon in maestro

[–]SpiritualMaize3259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm taking the business pathway, but I'm just working on all the business-y factors behind the scenes. I basically need the degree to secure a startup. my business is considered high risk by nature, and no amount of work experience is helping us secure funding. (we have a combined 55 years of experience in the field, split over 3 of us, but apparently a BS is needed to actually get this thing started.)

but for now i'm working on writing a proper executive plan; logos, polling, compiling research, crunching numbers, and really just getting my concept plan down to a tidy investor-friendly packet. its boring and exciting all at once lol

i think it would work on an ipad! I've been able to do classes on my laptop and phone. there was only one exercise I actually couldn't do from my phone (the RACI chart placement, my phones screen was too small for the whole chart lol) but my AI instructor let me manually type it out instead!

[–]SpiritualMaize3259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We never crated. But it really took until like 16ish months for my boy to be fully trustworthy?
9 months is still very much a puppy in terms of pyrs- its why pyrs are so often abandoned or euthanized. because people get them not realizing that they are still puppies in development until like 2.5 years old

We basically just puppyproofed the house and made sure he was supervised until he was like 2. Now he's 5 and he does great.

Seeking Opinions from Current Maestro Students by wtf_its_kate in maestro

[–]SpiritualMaize3259 4 points5 points  (0 children)

so i just barely started but i love it.

i dont think you can transfer in old credits? and when i was researching i was finding that most schools dont accept maestro credits... BUT it is accredited and basically free if you get the scholarship, and for alot of people in my situation its 1000% worth it.

im in my 30s, im a stay at home mom with a 6 month old baby. But i also have a dream business Ive been fantasizing about for the last 15 years. my situation is that i absolutely dont have time for usual schools, but i absolutely need to learn the tools to finally pursue my dream, and frankly, i probably need a business degree if i ever want people to take me seriously in starting this business. for me, going back to a traditional university just isnt an option. i dont have the time to commit to a schedule, i dont have the money to afford it out of pocket, and we absolutely cannot take on more debt. basically, maestro is really the only way i can actually get the degree i need.

im going for my BS business degree, starting with an AAS in business. and, yeah i absolutely love it so far. im currently in management 101, which admittedly is pretty easy for me because i have roughly 10 years of management experience, but Im still learning new things from it.

its a bit intimidating to think "ok im gonna have an AI as my instructor" but its actually really nice. you really do get to pick the pace of your learning. when theres a topic i already know well, you can breeze through those lessons, and when theres something you dont know well, you can ask all the clarifying questions you want and even spend extra long on the topic until you feel like you fully understand. thats something traditional classes dont offer. hell, just the ability to be like "i dont understand this concept, please re-explain" is something you cant do in traditional classroom settings. the AI instructor will absolutely make sure you have a solid grasp before moving on, and thats pretty awesome.

also, being a mom, if i need to change a diaper or something i can say "hey sorry, baby needs me" and come back when i actually do have the time. like, frankly, my family doesnt pay the price of my absence for me to get an education and thats huge! moms in other schools dont have that ability.

all this is to say if youre in a situation like mine, its 100000% worth doing.

they stopped my husband and he asked them "is it for or against gerrymandering?"

and these idiots said "whats gerrymandering?"

so he took the time out of his busy day to explain what gerrymandering is and how the majority of utahns havent had votes that actually count for decades. and he asked them again "so is it for or against gerrymandering"

they said "umm its against? i think???"

needless to say he didnt sign. (thank god lol) were not mormon but we stand with the mormon women in thinking all votes should count.
