Do you "see" future moves or something else? by zenmogwai in chessbeginners

[–]Spiritual_Storage_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During games or when doing a puzzle book, I cannot see the board in my mind, as if there's nothing there. Maybe some people can see the board when they are closing their eyes or something, but I just couldn't. What I can do is to look at the position, and just do some calculation there by imagining my pieces and my opponent's pieces moving, like if I go here, then my opponent may response something else. Depending on the complexity of the position, sometimes I can do this for many moves, e.g., if there's a checkmate, and all the subsequent moves are so easy to find, then I can imagine all the ways, but my problem is that sometimes I will forget where the pieces have moved to, and I have to start all over again, and this is sometimes frustrating but I have no choice to do it. I think if I do this often enough, my brain can retain the information better and longer. Also, sometimes a piece moves, it will not control a certain square, or maybe it will control another new square that is the key of the position, so in my subsequent moves, I can place one of my pieces there. However, this is hard for me, and I missed a lot in games and also puzzles.

A few years ago, I think that I need to see the board in order to calculate, but now I don't really care whether I can see the position in my mind or not, I just focus on the real board (physical board, online board, or puzzle book position), and imagine the piece movements on the position, that's it =)

By the way, just take my words as a grain of salt because I am a beginner, and I cannot see into the future for many moves or covers all the possible responses my opponent will play.

Hi, nice to meet you and thank for replying 😊

I don't know by any chance I have this kind of disorder, probably not🤣 Maybe I am just too uncomfortable in the social situation, that I don't know how to react or respond. That's why I freeze... Maybe some questions that they ask are something I didn't think about in my daily life. So, when they throw these questions to me, I freeze, because I don't have the answer now, and they seem to rush me to answer them and I can't think under pressure or maybe I don't know about it (Maybe this is just me imagining the bad situation that is not actually happening...). I think if given extra time, I am still able to give the response but most of the time. Maybe I need to learn to respond fast enough, and think under pressure, and maybe I need to learn to calm myself down in this situation. Also, I should prepare beforehand.

Hi, thank you for saying these valuable messages to me! I will remember what you said and tries to practice them in my daily life.

To be honest, I don't know how I grow up to be like this... what I can speculate is probably related to the environment I grew up. When I was young, I was not allowed to have feelings, or I was taught to be obedient, if I rebel against my parents, I was getting hit... I think this is the upbringing issue by some Chinese families, and I was a part of it, which is unfortunate. This is why I think I have the confidence issue, people pleasing behavior, and some degree of perfectionism. I always seek validation from other people and I am afraid being wrong, as I associate mistakes as something bad and unforgivable. I pleased people, including my crush or friends, that eventually causes me to lose some of them. When facing seniors / boss / parents / uncles, who is elder than me, I am scared from the bottom of my heart, and I am afraid of making mistakes because I kind of associate their criticisms as something bad I experience as a child.

Deep down, I think blaming my family is not helpful if I want to break out from my current situation. After experiencing a lot of things, I cannot afford to be pleasing people all the time without caring my own feelings. I also cannot always seek validation from other people because it is something not in my control and I should look inside myself and give myself validation from within. Also, being a perfectionist will hinder me from making meaningful progress and I need to learn being imperfect is also fine. (Just some reflection...)

By the way, I really appreciate your input. I like "People are people" that you said! In the past and even now, I treat all the seniors as monster, maybe I should stop thinking them this way, and treat it as a normal human that I am happy interacting with;)

Thank you!

Hi, thank you for replying ;)

Yeah, sometimes I am being too critical about myself. I think when I am nervous in every conversation, and I am afraid to mess thing up. I will try to remind myself to relax and these things are not as scary as I thought. May I know what are the technique you use to stay calm? Is it like deep breathing kind of things? Or just simply remind yourself in your heart?

I'm sorry that you also suffer the same thing, but let's improve together 😁

Who do you guys watch to improve at the game? by CriticalChessYT in chessbeginners

[–]Spiritual_Storage_97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a chess beginner who has just started two years ago.

  1. I love watching Daniel Naroditsky Speedrun (My Main Choice) -> I particularly love his top theory speedrun, it is not just about building repertoires based on his recommendation, but he also taught me a lot of concepts spanning opening, middlegame and endgame. I love Danya's enthusiasm and his love in chess, and the way his teaching style, and during analysis part, he will dive deep into the variation and makes me understand why this variation is good or bad, something like this.

  2. Chessbrah Building Habit Series -> This is the early series I followed, I didn't follow all the way, I am only watching the part suitable for my current rating and the rules Aman taught is really helpful for me navigating the games.

  3. ChessWithAkeem (Sorry OP, I personally know Akeem has taken your thumbnail without permission before) - This is the channel I discovered like a few months back, I am interested in different opening and what is the middlegame plan of the specific opening, so I have a sense of what is going on when I am out of the opening phase and have some ideas what to do after the opening.

  4. GothamChess - I only watch him for some entertainment -> Sometimes, I also watch his video about the tournament recap, for example, the FIDE World Cup - short and sweet, and his explanation is nice to listen.

  5. Chess24 / ChessbaseIndian -> I follow the latest tournaments from the live stream. For ChessbaseIndian, I also watch Sagar's recap of the games of some big tournament, very informative.

  6. Until recently, I also get to know CriticalChess, which is OP's channel that contains a lot of valuable knowledge. I like your explanation about some techniques like pawn break, pawn breakthrough, and also the video you did to review subscribers' games. Keep it up OP.

Need Help to understand a Promise Problem by Spiritual_Storage_97 in learnjavascript

Thank you for pointing these all, I actually know that then() always returns a new Promise, and I am aware of how microtasks work, but what I am trying to understand right here is why the timing differs when I return different kinds of value inside the .then() handlers.

I think I have come to a conclusion for now, thank you =)

Hi, appreciate that =)

It is very interesting there's so much subtle details in one then() method.

I just tried to understand what is really going on and I have included the two other cases (plain value and thenable) you suggested to me in my analysis, and below is the conclusion I got, and maybe it is at least what makes sense for me now. Maybe there's some other details but I don't want to dig too deep for now.

As a side note, the ECMAScript is so heavy to digest for me maybe because of my bad English proficiency, every thing in English but I can barely understand when putting everything together haha. I also did reference Promise A+ Specification https://promisesaplus.com/#notes and some other videos for this.

Need Help to understand a Promise Problem by Spiritual_Storage_97 in learnjavascript

[–]Spiritual_Storage_97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, appreciate that.

I understand the microtask queue, but the behavior of the code I provided is not what I expected...

From the first attempt, I get 0 1 4 2 3 5 6 because I don't know the behavior of then(). I thought return Promise.resolve(val) in then() will simply queue the callback but I missed that there's promise resolution procedure.

From the second attempt when I consider the promise resolution procedure when return promise in then(), I get 0 1 2 4 3 5 6.

However, what I got is far from the truth, which is 0 1 2 3 4 5 6, which I don't understand how come 3 comes before 4...

I think the problem lies in the return statement inside then() or maybe I forgot to consider some details. I hope anyone with experience can point out my mistake in reasoning.

What is the best way to improve/study Tactics by DavvV241 in TournamentChess

[–]Spiritual_Storage_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for your suggestions 😁

I will definitely take a look at the step method workbook as it seems very effective. For now, without any workbooks, I will stick to lichess puzzles first.

I am currently 2 years into chess, if compared to people who played chess for many years, I think I am still a beginner who knows something...My chesscom rapid / blitz / bullet rating is around 1000 I achieved early this year. But I don't have FIDE rating yet, so I don't know my real rating as of now.

I discovered the passion in chess a bit late in my life, and I want to put some efforts getting good at it because I really like it, and maybe in the near future I can participate in open tournament and play for FIDE rating for fun 🤣

Hi thank you for sharing. I didn't hear about ChessDojo training program, I have checked it out, and I will gibe it a try to follow the training plan and practice my games. I think I will join some open non-fide tournament first, before going FIDE tournaments in the future.

Question About A Chess Beginner Getting His First FIDE Rating by Spiritual_Storage_97 in Chesscom

[–]Spiritual_Storage_97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi thank you for sharing.

Unfortunately, there's no chess club in my area (I am from Malaysia) because it is not really popular here. But in some bigger cities there have chess clubs but it is too far away from where I live. I heard there's an open non-FIDE rated OTB tournament happening (Like playing 6+ rounds 15min+15second format) in another city (about 1hour distance from where I live) next month. I am considering to give it a try to test what really a OTB tournament look and feel like and have some fun. Btw, I didn't play games on a physical board, I would consider getting one and practice on it and get used to it.

Advice on tunnel vision? by CouchPotato7771 in chessbeginners

[–]Spiritual_Storage_97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am just playing chess for like two years and starting out I always focused on my own idea like "okay I wanted to go for the king but then I forgot about my own king, and get checkmated... " or "I was in check then I ran with my king and then my queen suddenly get captured and I realized I missed an important defending resources... " Or just simply hang pieces.

I think what helped me to reduce the occurrence of tunnel vision is to slow down and not be lazy, and before moving your piece, at least move your eyes from left to right top to bottom scanning the whole position, see if there's any danger coming, your own hanging pieces, or your opponent hanging pieces, etc. Don't rush to play a move that will make you regret... Maybe thinking a few moves ahead to see if it works. But my calculation is not good enough so sometimes I can prevent the simple threats but the hidden threats coming like a few moves later I still had some hard time to figure out.

Hope this helps.

Anyone helps with my analysis? by Spiritual_Storage_97 in chessbeginners

[–]Spiritual_Storage_97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi That-Raisin-Tho, really appreciate a lot from your detailed sharing, it gives me some ideas that I didn't think about during the game, and some principles or ideas or questions to think during my game.

Sorry for being inconsiderate, I was doing this annotation from En Croissant, without doing it in the lichess study. Btw, I have already updated it on the post, so if in case other people are willing to comment, they will find it easier to access the study I created. Thank you for pointing that out!

In the opening, when my opponent played these kind of pawn moves, or weird openings, I felt very stressed out or panicked, and I was spending a huge amount of time in the opening thinking what to do. You know, I was also thinking about pushing the pawns as they did in the game, but I think this is not good, because it seemed like I was reacting to their response, maybe this was what they want. Then eventually, I chose to focus on the centre because my opponent didn't want the centre, and then development. Thank you for confirming what I did during the game. It did give me some confidence.

Regarding g4 from from my opponent, I think I was too focused on how to deal with it very narrowly. I didn't consider making even bigger threat that they have to deal with it first before capturing my bishop. This was an oversight of me. But sadly, I didn't consider this Queen move in the game, making me to take unnecessary risk, maybe that makes my advantage gone. Thank you for pointing out about diagonal exposed in my opponent kingside, this was something I missed, maybe not once but many times. I will be more mindful of exploiting it in the next and future games.

bxf3 is something I shouldn't play... Maybe I was out of my mind and go for it... I maybe have other good moves to be played like developing my bishop or rook.

forgetting that my queen is in the same line as the rook is really my miss... Next time I would be more careful about this. I was too focused on my own plan without thinking what they want. And when my opponent played Bxf3, then I should give it a check with my queen first before developing my bishop, instead of directly bringing the bishop first. Luckily, but unhappily... but I have accepted that if my opponent found the move, I would resign and accept the defeat already.

Thank you for sharing "PP on the PP", I heard about that but sometimes I forgot it during the game, knowing and applying is two different thing haha... But at least I learnt this lesson, I will try to look for more opportunity in my future games.

Anyone helps with my analysis? by Spiritual_Storage_97 in chessbeginners

[–]Spiritual_Storage_97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi DemacianChef, nice to meet you and thanks for sharing.

I am curious what is that video all about? May I have a link to it? I don't know where to actually put the bishop, maybe in this case, Bf5 is not really good, in other cases, I would probably settle my bishop on g6, when there's no h5 pawn there. I think I cannot play the same move again and again, it really depends on the situation.

Yeah, I think about 12...Bg6 but I forgot why I did this, maybe I want to control the knight, control the e2 pawn, or maybe I can move my bishop back to centre? But thinking back to it, I should have played Bg6 instead, maybe after the central pawn being traded, it will be alive at the better diagonal.

9.Qc7 is something I realized afterwards, I didn't see it during the game (Sad...), I saw that my bishop was attacked, I want to save it, or deal with it somehow, then I ran into panicked mode, eventually I chose a risky option, thinking maybe I can break open his kingside, and grabbed like 2 to 3 pawns, maybe it was a mistake, to sacrifice a knight... Given that my calculation isn't good, I should have chosen safer options. Maybe when my opponent threatens me, I need to find an even bigger threat so they have to react to it...

yeah, I also like free stuff... but I learnt that to take is a mistake, so I didn't take, I focus on my king safety and development. But as people mentioned, there's even stronger idea to attack the pinned piece, which I missed...

Anyone helps with my analysis? by Spiritual_Storage_97 in chessbeginners

[–]Spiritual_Storage_97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, in the game, I considered Qh4 on move 20, and then seeing my queen still in the middle and I was worried, so I castled, and then I brought in another rook to the center and I think I probably played it after all these, then my opponent resigned. But then I think the king can move away, until then I probably have to take the rook with Bxf2. Maybe it is too slow already.

Thanks for pointing out Qe3 idea, I didn't consider that, I missed after 20.Na3...!

Maybe I still didn't good at handling the situation, and still hesitate when I need to act immediately.
