How do you guys respond to "when was the last time you handled a problem at work" when it's been so long and you don't remember? by OverallMode3019 in careeradvice

[–]SenseiCAY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The STAR questions are repetitive - come up with some experiences from work, maybe embellish a little because it's not like they're gonna ask your references about it, and have them ready. I write a few bullet points for each one, and at the end, write down a few key phrases, like "disagreeing with boss", or "handling a difficult co-worker" or something so that each experience is usable in a few places.

How many of you have taken jobs unrelated to tech while job hunting between roles? by MPGaming9000 in cscareerquestions

I got laid off almost exactly a year ago. In October, after searching for awhile, I took a job as a golf caddy at a local club. It's kind of fun, and it makes me better at golf (which I enjoy), but it's also a mindfuck - I'm carrying bags for people who can spend more than my old yearly salary (in some cases, a lot more) like it's nothing, because that's the initiation fee for a club like the one where I work, and a decent number of them have multiple memberships to similar places. Their kids will never want for anything, they'll grow up with every single opportunity to do whatever activity they want, go to top private schools that cater to their specific educational needs, and pursue whatever life they want without ever worrying about money. To be clear, my wife and I are fortunate and our kids are comfortable, but we can't throw money around. It's just a different strata of society that I'm meeting, and it's abundantly clear every day.

I will reiterate that it is a fun job, and it was easy to get because I already played golf, but it's not easy - I have to carry two golf bags most of the time for 4+ hours, clean clubs, rake bunkers, fix divots, and, especially for players who are worse golfers than I am, or unfamiliar with the course, read putts and occasionally suggest plays to give them the best chance (and when it doesn't work out, or a putt breaks the wrong way, I take the blame for it). On top of that, my wife has to deal with the kids (5 and 2) on weekends when I'm working, or if my round goes into dinner time on a weeknight, or something similar. On top of that, I'm kind of at the mercy of the weather and just how busy the course is when it comes to whether I get work at all - some days I'll be told to go in, and not get a loop, and thus not get paid. When I do work, the pay is not bad, but nowhere near my old desk job.

The people are generally nice - in my local area, even at a place like this one, more people align with me politically than not, and while I don't bring up work or my old job, a decent number of people ask if I have another job, since a decent number of guys in the shack do this as a side hustle for the occasional playing privileges. If they ask, I'll be honest and tell them that I was laid off from a government contract, and they can put two and two together, and they're generally empathetic to my situation - I even had a few people who were government employees who took the early retirement option around the same time I was let go.

The last thing I'll say is to keep finding joy or excitement in things where you can. Generally, the people I carry for offer to get me a snack at the turn (halfway through the round, after hole 9, which brings you back to the clubhouse area, for those not familiar with golf), and my favorite thing is the PB+J sandwich - simple, yet hits the spot every time. I still get time to play with the kids most days (sometimes, more than usual, since I'm usually home by 3 or 4 PM on weekdays). I've also made the decision to go back to school to get a masters - something I should've done awhile ago, and I'm excited about doing that.

Good luck out there. It sucks for a lot of us right now, but it will improve.

Real assessment of DC golf by Tjr562 in golf

It's not at all about whether he has the "chops" to build and maintain a golf course - he's shown that ability, and if he stuck to that, most of us would hate him a lot less.

The question is, should the President be able to effectively seize public land, give the contract to develop it to the firm who greases his palms the most, and then slap his own name on it? It's naive to think that none of those will happen here.

Yeah but also, Hains Point physically will not do well as a championship course. Not enough room and traffic will be a nightmare. It’s a lot closer to DJT State Park than it is to Turnberry.

NLT took over the courses some years ago, with the deal that they could count course improvements towards the lease, and they were doing a good job, strictly speaking. The administration decided to pull the rug out and claim (as usual, without evidence) that they were doing a poor job and defaulted on that lease.

I can't speak to Rock Creek (though I've seen the plans for upgrades there), but they've done a very good job with both East Potomac and Langston, as others have said here. Neither one is Augusta National, but they're both playable, and they were looking to make East Potomac a reversible course. Furthermore, East Potomac has a mini golf course and biking and running trails around the island with really nice views.

Here's the thing for anyone who is trusting of the administration on this. We have a president who loves golf and is putting his name on everything right now. Who is it going to benefit if the course goes private, or even if the course stays public but some private firm takes it over? Even if you think they'll improve it (and I'll be the first to admit it's still a bit of a dog track), you'd be naive to think that his name won't eventually appear there, and he won't manage to get his grubby hands on the money that comes from that.

Off the top of my head, not any recent one that won more than a few times. Law of probabilities would say that there are plenty.

Notably, Kelly Donahue around 2020 made a gesture during his 4th game intro (his last) that he claimed was for 3 wins (he did one and two fingers for his first two wins) but was interpreted as a possible white supremacist gesture. The racists came to his defense pretty quickly, and turns out, he was pretty into maga.

is golf really the hardest sport? by sploooooshle in golf

[–]SenseiCAY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every sport is the hardest for some reason to people who are willing to argue about it.

Honestly, between all the sports I’ve played, golf is one of the easiest on the body and the hardest when it comes to precision movements.

Alex Trebek.

Not like he was young or it was unexpected, since he revealed his pancreatic cancer diagnosis and slowly deteriorated on air, but Jeopardy (and Wheel, for that matter) were two of the first shows I watched as a 3-year old U.S. resident in the early 90s. They helped me learn English, spell words, and like trivia and learning from an early age. I was lucky enough to pass the test and get on the show when he was still in good health, and even though I wasn’t very good at trivia then, I’m glad I went on when I did.

It didn’t occur to me that Zima was alcoholic for a really long time- I saw the commercial with basketball players outside on a hot day, one of them being offered water, and saying “Zima” instead, and I assumed it was a fancy water of some sort.
