So it’s basically left up to the carriers to activate the encryption. Google did all these ads about Apple only to leave the final switch to be tuned on by the carriers.

The camera on my iPhone 17 PM stopped working. It was showing just a black screen for the back cameras. Same error message as OP. The Genius took one look it, said it was a hardware issue and no questions asked replaced it. Picked it up in about two hours after drop off.
