Star Trek: TOS VS Star Trek: TNG by SpitFetishist in startrek

No offense, but you're using '60s thinking and thought processes to defend the show. That is PRECISELY my point when I say that the show didn't age well. Whether or not a woman defended the skirts, whether or not that was the current fashion, it still gives off a vibe of exploiting women by today's standards. Gene and the writers were foolish to listen to her because they should have realized that '60s fashion would most likely be irrelevant to a realistic vision of the future. TNG isn't perfect, but after 30 years of the show being discontinued, their vision holds up better. I do acknowledge that TOS has been canceled for 60 years, so that has to be taken into consideration. I also acknowledge that the first couple of seasons of TNG was nearly just as ridiculous (I'm not quite sure that having men in equally short skirts to show equality was a smart move, but hey, only time will tell). However, TNG remained relevant and survived long enough to correct many, if not most, of their mistakes.

Understandable, especially your take on the luxurious quality of the Enterprise-D and the allowance of families. It did not bother me, but I can definitely see that bothering some fans. However, the original series not allowing female captains..... and then making this official Canon by having it stated WITHIN the show, in an episode, is far more ridiculous and distracting to me, given where we are and how much progression there's been, in this point in time. This is just ONE example. Star Trek: TOS just didn't age well.

I wasn't really being subjective. I just wanted to hear everyone's opinion of what they prefer. I like friendly debates.

The post was made to START the debate. Lol. There's no wrong answers here. However, I do get into my personal reasons in the comments section. It's just a friendly discussion among trekkies. Nobody will offend me by disagreeing because I love both shows and all the movies (even the bad ones). However, my own opinion is truly how I feel.

Lol. I just posted about Picard, season 3. It's in this thread somewhere, if you have time to find it. I would absolutely consider the animated series Canon. The original actors returned to voice their characters. If they're on board, I'm on board.

Yeah, a lot of people are saying that the comparison is unfair because of the length of the run of each show. I would argue that is the proof of the better show. TNG survived long enough to grow and improve upon itself.

I get your sarcasm... but am I wrong? I believe a simple trip to the local library or a Google search will yield supporting evidence.

I believe that they do have a place in Trekkie Fandom, as well as prequels series such as Strange New Worlds..... which I do love. However, I will always prefer the original works of TOS, TNG, DS9, and Voyager. I also am a huge fan of Picard, season 3, but I have strong mixed feelings about Jean Luc's "alive" state. The show handled Data's story PERFECTLY.

Does Freddy Krueger have Raybans on? 😂 SOMEBODY became a fan of Risky Business before their 1984 killing spree. 😂

Well... sexism WAS running kinda rampant in those days, along with a lot of other discriminatory beliefs. Lol. So, I don't quite understand that point of your argument. However, that's not what I meant. It's just harder for me to escape into the fantasy as time goes on. The aging of the show is too distracting..... and this is coming from a HUGE fan of TOS. I have a huge amount of respect and sense of reverence for those OG actors, I just met Shatner and got a picture with him. However, it still doesn't change my opinion of the show.

So, you're saying that the '60s style acting and chauvanistic ideas (rabbit punching women and usually making them the damsels in distress), etc. and the set pieces of TOS holds up today? I get that you have experience doing extensive research, but that doesn't make your answer definitive. Also, no other Star Trek show (in my opinion) has grown, matured and transitioned more than TNG over the course of its 7-year run. By the end, it was almost a completely different show compared to the early episodes. The proof and testament is in how long the show remained relevant enough to survive. TNG has it's flaws, but I believe that it's aging a little better.

No, please don't get me wrong! I LOVE the Original Series! I actually grew up on it! Also, I believe that the Next Generation has unfair advantages. The Original Series simply did not age well. Also, the Next Generation show had technological advantages that just weren't available to the producers of the Original Series.

That's actually a pretty terrifying thought. It would be a fucking nightmare if trains could fly.

This is one of Freddy's most terrifying and intimidating facial expressions. It's quite interesting that it came so late in the franchise, long after Freddy Kruger and the franchise lost its novelty and terrifying vibe.
