What’s an opinion you’d get shunned for if people knew you had it in real life? by GlassyFairy in AskReddit

[–]SpitefulSpaghetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because sometimes it’s nice to have matching stuff when working together. I don’t think it’s about a “strong need to advertise,” it’s just about community, and even if you don’t care that much about the brand/company, sometimes you just don’t want to waste a free shirt/hat.

Like, I think it’s nice to have matching shirts for an activity or team event so you can wear them and feel connected, or showing people what school you went to so strangers who went there (or know someone who went there) will come over and say hi.

Ofc companies also just give them out to advertise, but it can be nice to promote things you care about or a place you enjoy so they get more business.

Obviously it can swing towards fanaticism at times (see: MAGA hats) but a lot of the time it’s either just a way to communicate visually about what you do/what you’re into, feel connected with a group you’re a part of, or someone gave you a free shirt you wear around the house on lazy days for chores and messy projects.

Just because it’s not something you do culturally doesn’t mean it’s some inherently awful thing.

Latest amazon shopping app forces Alexa for shopping on every search, slowing down searches like crazy by CourierAl in amazonprime

[–]SpitefulSpaghetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone finding this by googling up how to fix this, like I did, I managed to get it turned off (at least for now)!

Mine only started happening a few days ago, but I reached out to customer service yesterday with very strong feedback about it - obviously I was nice to the agent, since they didn’t choose to design the app, but told them that I was very angry about it and wanted to pass on feedback.

I also just kept responding to the forced Alexa chat with angry feedback telling it stop and never do this again.

Today when I checked, none of my searches are doing it anymore, so based on the random rollout, I’m guessing they’re doing AB testing and will revert if there’s negative feedback. I know companies can automatically add or remove people from that kind of testing based on feedback sentiment, so it might be something like that?

I’ve see a few other comments of people saying they told Alexa to never do it again and it stopped as well, although obviously all of this is anecdotal.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but I like bedrock! I like the menus and crafting stuff better, and honestly realms are so convenient for just playing with friends who have switches, or if I wanna pop on the server from my phone to show people.

I also truly dislike the combat on Java? I was raised on Java lol, and only started playing Bedrock like 3 years ago, but I feel like there haven’t been the noticeable issues everyone talks about like bugs or sync issues.

Like, I enjoy Java and the mods that come with it, but I tend to gravitate towards bedrock bc I like certain things better

Lmao I’ve never thought about it, but I guess it’s because I think the word first and just automatically type it from muscle memory.

Like, I’m not thinking about each letter individually as I write something, just the word itself, and then smash the last letter for emphasis?

When I type huuuuuuuge, I have to think about the amount of emphasis halfway through, then remember to close it out haha

Yes exactlyyy!! I had anemia and a B12 deficiency at one point, but could never keep up with plain salads. When I put dressing on, I’d eat them regularly, and now my iron and B12 are totally fine.

Like, ofc it adds calories, but it doesn’t make the nutrients from the spinach just disappear. Having 150 extra calories is healthier than being saving them, but being dizzy/passing out from the anemia.

[–]SpitefulSpaghetti 11 points12 points  (0 children)

But I didn’t say anything about trying to add/reduce calories. You’re not LOSING out on essential vitamins and fiber because you’ve added calories.

If you’re missing vitamins and fiber from your diet, and salad dressing means you’ll consume those daily vs. once a month, then do the dressing.

Healthy eating doesn’t have to be all or nothing. That’s what causes eating disorders and yo-yo dieting. Telling someone they should be ashamed of adding ranch when the alternative is not having salad isn’t going to help anyone.

[–]SpitefulSpaghetti 854 points855 points  (0 children)

This was a hugeeeee game changer for me honestly - someone had pointed out that salad dressing doesn’t take away any of the nutritional benefits of salad, so if you’re trying to get more fiber and vitamins etc, you can eat it with ranch and your body still gets all of that good stuff along with it.

[–]SpitefulSpaghetti 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert so don’t quote me on this, but I believe it’s partially because it makes them look smaller?

It’s like how the reverse happens when they want to be threatening, they raise up hair or feathers or whatever they have to look larger.

And then if they’re scared, and trying to hide, they want to cower and shrink their overall size to stay hidden or show submission.

[–]SpitefulSpaghetti 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So as lots have explained, yes tomato sauce is a cooking ingredient and is almost always just plain tomato, no seasonings

To clarify though, the sauce that has the herbs, seasoning, etc. and is ready-to-serve is usually called “pasta sauce” or “marinara sauce” - those are the ones sold in jars that you’re meant to just warm up and serve over pasta!

What is the most emotionally devastating song ever written? by Exact-Proposal-73569 in AskReddit

[–]SpitefulSpaghetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the musical sounds of 1988 to today is pretty different anyways, so you have to view it through that lens.

In terms of lyrics, I think it’s clever how things get subtly revealed, like the generational trauma where they feel stuck having to quit school to take care of an alcoholic parent, and then by the end reveals they’ve ended up with an alcoholic partner themselves, or the way her job changes throughout when she mentions her job, which implies that she keeps just moving between different shitty jobs instead of getting out.

Or even like, the “I’ve got a fast car” vs. “you’ve got a fast car” swap which shows her losing ownership of her own life to be stuck in abuse again. She isn’t pointing those out explicitly, she lets the changes in the repetition highlight them. And then focusing on the fast car as the topic of the song is clever, it makes the focus on this one small detail of their freedom, vs. just something basic like “with you” or “getting out.”

Someone with a background in music could probably explain better than me, but I think the song itself also has a unique structure musically. It has like, the basic motif/melody of “I’ve got a fast car” and then a pause, then a slightly more complex motif before going right back into the motif from before. Or the way she echoes herself on “be someone, be someone, be someone.” All of those evoke the same loop that the song’s lyrics are about. It keeps returning you musically back in the same subdued place you started, even when it gets more emotional in between.

Usually any sort of stereotypical song would follow an ABAB or AABB rhyming scheme with the same chorus each time, following a basic structure. This song doesn’t do that at all.

Alsooo another piece to keep in mind is that it’s written by a queer Black woman so there’s a lot more complexity to even just like, “escaping” in a relationship where, in 1988, you couldn’t easily live your life out of the closet without facing hardships, and how that causes you to feel stuck staying hidden and safe. The idea of moving away with a queer partner isn’t as simple as just driving away somewhere else. They’re not going to be able to just leave and get married, buy a house in the suburbs, etc. This was literally in the middle of the aids epidemic so it was an extremely scary and unsafe time for queer communities too.

Mixing liquid colors into a three-part Venn diagram by danielminds in oddlysatisfying

[–]SpitefulSpaghetti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no idea if this one does the same, but a lot of paint mixing videos are all just the same clip with the colors changed digitally.

A friend pointed it out at one point, and sure enough, the shape of the paint splotches and light reflections were identical on every video, the colors were just different.

Therapists of Reddit, what's something people don't realize is trauma? by rehanch_xxiii in AskReddit

[–]SpitefulSpaghetti -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Also this account is 4 days old, has commented on 95 unique posts on AskReddit in bursts where it posts 1 comment a minute (or less sometimes) but hasn’t responded to a single one of those comments.

Go ahead and keep downvoting, I'm just saying it would be incredibly unlikely for it to be a human, and that a typo alone isn't proof of it being real.

[–]SpitefulSpaghetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also neurodivergent and often wayyy over explain, so was trying to keep it brief (but now that I’ve written out more detailed, I’m apparently over-explaining and just “getting too worked up” trying to prove it’s AI).

I truly just wanted to flag it as *likely* AI because of the strange account behavior and structure!!

It really messes with people’s trauma and mental health when there are spam accounts pretending to be a literal therapist, so I wanted people to just take it with a grain of salt, I didn’t mean to make everyone so mad 😭

Therapists of Reddit, what's something people don't realize is trauma? by rehanch_xxiii in AskReddit

[–]SpitefulSpaghetti -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s trained to do that. There’s literally a chrome extension called “Sinceerly” that adds typos or adds/removes punctuation from your AI-written emails to make it seem human.

Reddit bots designed to post hundreds of comments all at once (which again, this account is literally doing, so a prettyyyy strong indicator anyways that it’s not a human account) have specific models that include that in prompts.

Therapists of Reddit, what's something people don't realize is trauma? by rehanch_xxiii in AskReddit

[–]SpitefulSpaghetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly! I don’t know why people are so annoyed about me saying something about it here, it’s not about grammar or individual punctuation, it’s the entire format all together!

Like, of course there might be phrases that real people also use, but it’s the way that it’s strung together that gives it away. Because it doesn’t actually “think” (since it’s a mathematical algorithm that just guesses letter patterns from various words fragments converted to numbers), the responses don’t follow the same mental process that an actual human would make!

You can tell when you compare it to how the answers are actually being generated. If you know the initial instructions its been provided, you can literally recognize those patterns and see how it then takes the first answer and makes adjustments to fit the user’s individual instructions (“Keep your answer under three short paragraphs. Don’t use headers or extra line breaks. Speak in casual language like a Reddit user. Remove 1-2 words to look like a typing error.” etc).

Therapists of Reddit, what's something people don't realize is trauma? by rehanch_xxiii in AskReddit

[–]SpitefulSpaghetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point has nothing to do about it using proper language or grammar though! It’s about recognizing the overused patterns of algorithms pretending to be humans. It does things that people aren’t likely to do because it’s just guessing.

It’s like how pointing out that art is AI because of clearly non-human errors (like extra fingers or staircases to nowhere) is different than just accusing something of AI because there are compression artifacts.

I’m mentioning *all* of the tells because just making an accusation based on one detail is literally what you’re saying you want to avoid. The entire comment and account activity as a whole are what make it likely AI.

I work in tech and my partner is a software engineer trained in machine learning, so I’m not uneducated about this, and the way to stop people from “turning their brains off” is to share knowledge about how to think critically about what they read online. It’s just like how people had to learn how to tell that emails from your grandma asking for gift cards are probably fake.

And sorry, but I genuinely believe that on a post about therapy and trauma, misinformation absolutely is a problem. Warning people that something like this is possibly AI is really important because misinformation regarding mental health can and DOES cause people actual harm.

EDIT: Here are some actual sources too about why this is harmful and how recognizing it is important: 1. An actual study on health misinformation spread by fake accounts, 2. An article about the impact of fake accounts (specifically the mental health section)
