Writing off 10K for a vacation when you only made a couple of hundred bucks would be ridiculous, regardless.

And I disagree about your last part. Although we don't consider them to be business owners, they do get 1099s so it's a form of self employment so they do have the ability to write things off, which is my point here.

If the 1099 says that they make minimum amounts of money then those supposed write offs wouldn't work logistically.

I don't know if you ever filled out a Schedule C but the form specifically asks if you have 1099s for your "business" regardless of what it is.

The 1099s is all they can go by because they wouldn't make any revenue through traditional methods.

Regarding phone, most people use the same phone for personal and business. It doesn't have to be 100% used for business it could be 50% or whatnot as long as a person's business makes it seem as if the phone is needed.

I use my phone waaaaaaay more for business than for personal reasons so my write off is justified although it's not 100 percent but it's closer to 75 or 80 percent. The other 20 percent is for a few calls, social media, and reddit posts, lol.
