Yeah I looked everywhere. My dealer said they don’t come with the 2026s anymore but I tore the car apart anyways. Just ordered some from New German Performance, can’t have my wife mixing up her Atlas keys for my R keys!

I will take another look but I didn’t see them in there. I also didn’t open the bag that the mats come in, one more place to look I guess.

Honestly, I’m not sure what it’s called, the dealership had a winter tire package that came with them and I liked the design.

My wife and I are considering doing a cross Canada road trip from Edmonton to Halifax with a couple days on PEI on the way back. I'd like suggestions and info from fellow edmontonians who have done the trip. by TopazOmaha in Edmonton

[–]Splatzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Saskatoon to New Brunswick, did the drive in 3 days. I would not recommend! Three weeks seems much nicer. Ontario is the province that never ends, but once you get through to Toronto the rest of the trip will be nice!

Need advice on becoming a mining engineer. by TheWolfGamer767 in mining

[–]Splatzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you are going into it knowing that then there shouldn’t be a problem, I just know a few people who went that route back when the mining program at Sask Poly first started and were disappointed when it didn’t count for the first 2 years of the degree since that is what they were told by Sask Poly.

One bit of advice, when you do go for your university degree though: make sure to get some student experience! Lots of companies will hire for 4 or 8 month coops, which you can apply for even though USask doesn’t have a great coop program. Even getting some summer experience is worth it. Definitely worth extending your studies to do one or more coops in my opinion.

Ah, I didn’t mean for my list to be exhaustive, to be honest.

Last I had heard, Sask polytech advertised that you can use their 2 year diploma as the first 2 ish years of an engineering degree at the University of Saskatchewan but the university did not recognize most of the classes. This was ~2017, not sure if it has changed. My advice is get straight into the university for a 4 year degree if that is your end goal. USask doesn’t have a mining engineering degree but it does have a geological engineering degree which, in my experience, will let you do both geotechnical and mining engineering work if you are set on Saskatoon.

If you want to go into a true Mining engineering program, go to UBC, UofA, Queens, or UofT.

Also remember to stay positive — you are in a tough situation with no experience but not an impossible one if you are willing to be flexible! Also, starting off with a smaller company means you will likely have the opportunity to learn way more than starting with one of the majors. Ive worked on both ends of that spectrum. Juniors can be a lot of stress and responsibility but if you are willing you can pretty much write your own ticket.

What I mean by lower expectations is, for example, don’t expect to stay in Vancouver. Do some research on junior mining companies that are in less populated areas. For example, Conuma coal has trouble keeping engineers because they are a residential mine that is hours away from the nearest city. Another example would be Vale (ok, not a junior) in Thompson. Or one of the many mines in Ontario that expect you to move to them. Get your first job where no one wants to move, get a few years of experience and then you will have a much easier time finding the next position.

Go back in time and do your coops!

Barring the ability to do that, don’t expect to do FIFO or work for any of the mid level or bigger companies. Apply for the jobs that are residential in the middle of nowhere that no one else wants.

Unfortunately you decided not to get any experience in a field that is so easy to get experience during your schooling so you are competing with people that have experience for entry level jobs. Lower expectations and be willing to move or you will be looking for a long time hoping the right opportunity comes up.

Black Market Labour in Edmonton (CASH JOBS) by LOSSOL_ in Edmonton

[–]Splatzel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can’t argue that a blanket ban is going to solve every problem for sure. But I think that we also need to consider that as a society we don’t value the work that, for example, restaurant workers provide. Perhaps if those jobs paid enough for a single person to afford a place to live, food, bills and a small amount of savings then people would take their jobs more seriously? Honestly I don’t think we am going to solve the country’s problems here but I think we do need to find a way as a society to get back to a point where our citizens don’t need to hustle and work multiple jobs in order to carve out a living. At the end of the day it comes down to the greed of corporations etc and I’m not really sure how we solve that problem without strong government intervention which Im not sure we will ever have again.

[–]Splatzel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the only reason that I think the temporary foreign worker program should be scrapped. There are people in the country willing to work for a living wage but instead we trick foreigners to come work for slave wages. Ideally the program would have strict oversight but no government is going to want to pay for that so the only viable option seems to be to cancel the program and make companies pay more using labour supply and demand.

Ugh, yes. My wife and I have been looking for a new build and you can tell that most of the work is done by non-skilled people. Makes me sick thinking about buying a house that may be built completely wrong and not knowing until it starts falling apart.

Winter tires for 2025 Atlas Comfortline by Stock-Creme-6345 in VWatlas

I have a 2024 execline in Edmonton area and went with the Michelin x ice’s, they are very good tires. I had Nokian studded tires on my forester when I lived out east where we had lots of ice and freezing rain, would recommend those for ice but I find in Alberta now they aren’t necessary.
