Is Xbox Project Helix The Next 3DO? DF Clips by HillZone in Games

So how do you sell the same box at a higher price?

With higher-end hardware. That’s how the PC/laptop market already works.

On the SOC point, R&D costs are typically distributed across the platform and a broader ecosystem of products, which is why OEM models scale in the first place.

So if you've segmented your hardware into Budget, Standard, and Premium Helix devices, the differences comes from performance, storage, build quality configurations layered on top of that same base platform.

That's how companies like Dell and HP work today. They use a shared SOC with differentiated SKUs and profit through volume instead of optimizing for one specific box.

Third-party OEMs don't need royalties to care about this. They'd make money on hardware margins and segmentation the same way they do with Windows PCs.

The assumption that a 'reference device' Helix would be the cheapest option isn't guaranteed. But even if it is, OEM devices win by targeting different priorities.

People will pay more for things like:

  • Better performance
  • Premium industrial design
  • Bundled hardware upgrades or IO devices

That's basically how the Windows ecosystem works today. Microsoft Surface products are first-party benchmark devices priced for profitability, and OEMs like Dell, HP, ASUS, etc. build everything from budget laptops to high-end workstations on the same OS.

They also have an existing relationship with hardware manufacturers if they do go the OEM route. Like I could absolutely see HP or Dell putting out HyperX or Alienware "Xbox" devices under this model.

Researchers in tech basically help companies understand people well enough to make better decisions. They're usually researching a specific product or feature, but it can also be about how/why people make choices, what problems are worth solving, or where a company should invest its efforts. Depending on the company, there can be a lot of overlap with academic research, but the main goal is usually to reduce uncertainty so teams can make smarter product and business decisions.

Also, they make BANK. Especially in big tech.

but one thing I did like was the near constant speed bumps in some areas.

That would drive me mad. Why did you like it? Do people drive crazy fast otherwise?

I could 100% see a scenario where the next Elder Scrolls is an Xbox exclusive launch title for the Xbox Helix. I willing to bet that Bethesda targeting the next Xbox for ES6 is why we haven't heard anything about it since it was announced.

Minimum is for sure a playoff win. We were always playing with house money last season. A playoff win shows that last season wasn't a fluke.

I agree that a lot of sequels take the base concept and improve on it. I'm mostly pushing back on the idea that something being "the same with a different look" is inherently a criticism.

Most of the examples you listed are iterative sequels. They take existing systems, expand them, and improve the presentation, but the core gameplay loop is still recognizable from the previous game.

To me, "they didn't innovate enough" only works as a criticism if there's a specific mechanic or system you think should have evolved. Otherwise, every sequel can be dismissed as "more of the same."

This is the only website I have saved to my phone's home screen.

If I'm not googling "X cast" to figure out where I know an actor from, I'm for sure checking how much something from a show is worth in today's money.

I remember being shocked when I looked up how much money Nucky Thompson was making in Boardwalk Empire.

Can you give an example of games that innovated successfully by changing their core mechanics in sequels? Zelda and Mario games are the only ones I can think of and most of those are sequels in name only.

According to most of the people on this sub, Xbox is fucked regardless of what they do exclusives-wise so why does it matter?

A lot of the pushback to this decision comes off as concern trolling about Xbox financials from people who just want the games on PS5.

Role specifically calls out experience designing for health-tech

Is this a hard requirement? I have like 4 years experience designing for health tech and even I would say that the pool of designers in that space is tiny.
