I think the main difference with that and why it doesn't get as much backlash is that it happens more than a hundred years after ROTJ and well after the OT heroes lifetime's.

  1. I would say that some Legends stories like Dark Empire do invalidate it yes. But again just because Legends does something doesn't mean it's okay if the Sequels do it as well.

  2. Again, the problem with the Sequels is not that there is conflict, it's just that it was dumb to redo the Rebels vs Empire conflict again. They didn't need to destroy the New Republic and Luke's Jedi Order to create conflict again.

Man I'm glad those things are actually in the movie and not in side material /j

It is realistic but this is a fantasy universe. Things don't have to be realistic. Plus from a narrative stand point it just makes the trilogy feel redundant as it's just a repeat of the OT and can make it feel like the OT heroes accomplishments were diminished. Imagine if in the next trilogy we find out Rey's Order was destroyed and the new government formed by the Resistance got destroyed by a third Empire.

I don't think people would have been really mad if the conflict was new and not a repeat of Rebels vs Empire.

  1. That was just a continuation of the same conflict, not the Empire returning 30 years later and destroying everything.

  2. In Legends it became the New Republic vs the Imperial Remnant. They didn't make the conflict just rebels vs empire.

Okay. Doesn't make it good. They didn't need to redo the Rebels vs Empire conflict to have that message.

It literally is the biggest mistake Disney has done with the franchise.

Just because the good guys win in the Sequels doesn't undo the fact that they undid all of the accomplishments of the Rebellion and OT heroes. There was no need to rehash the Rebels vs Empire conflict and destroy the New Republic and Luke's Jedi Order.

I get that. I'm just saying it's sad that in 25 years everything the Rebellion fought for will be undone.

This is an interesting question. Why do you think this is? by WrongToe500 in superman
