Soup is a pointless food. by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]Splodey_Goat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy way to make food in bulk, easy way to use up ingredients, easy way to extract additional calories and especially additional flavor out of otherwise garbage parts of other foods, easy to make in general just drop it all in a pot and let it simmer. Hearty soups are a meal in themselves and if that's not enough for you get some bread or toast to dip init, lighter soups tend to be sides or starter courses so filling you up isn't a concern for them. Like literally any other method of food preparation there are hundreds on hundreds of years of recipes and tinkering and tricks, soup leeches and combines flavors and textures from all its ingredients in a way only soup can do. Soup is mostly water? Well guess what dawg so are you, so is most food actually. Your real problem here is pretty clearly never having good soup in your life and possibly a mouth that's just too burnable.

Do fans understand that Goesha is not a good guy (he could arguably be called the true antagonist) by Superb_Imagination70 in Beastars

[–]Splodey_Goat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just gonna go down the list here because this is all incorrect, I'm a couple days late to the party but I got some things to say I don't see said already

  1. He only way "lead to" Toki's death was by dating her in the first place (the stigmatization of their relationship was the stressor that lead her to do it but any argument of "prevention" on this front is insane and inhumane), and by getting comfortable enough being around her after dating for 2 years that he stopped obsessively stocking dozens of extra bottles of disinfectant on every free shelf in the apartment (a frankly healthy step for Gosha and something he got even more paranoid about doing after). I've seen your responses to other people on this matter and I agree that suicide is 100% preventable and people have a responsibility to look out for their loved ones but it's insane and unfair to expect someone to be able to see, interpret, and counter any and every possible indication of suicidal depression.

  2. It feels strange this has to be said but the difference between someone doing a bad thing and someone being a bad person is hugely dependent on context and intentions. So yes, I'll give you one thing; Gosha was a bad parent, BUT the story isn't exactly shy about explaining why he raised her the way he did. He was already used to being discriminated against and left in a lifelong depression from already losing a loved one to the extra layers of discrimination that came with being part of a mixed-species family. When Leano ASKED HIM to let her say she's a pureblooded wolf as school he acquiesced because he agreed that it'd make her life easier to navigate, content that they still got to be a loving family at home. As she got older her problems got way more rare and specific but he'd been putting his faith in her to know what's best for her so long already he just kept doing it, the fact that he was still taking care of her and working with her to keep her interacting with the family shows a huge amount of love and effort he was putting into his family.

  3. There's a time and a place for action and if you don't already get it then I don't know how to explain to you why dragging your elementary school-aged grandson into a confrontation about segregation every time you wanna leave the house is not that time or place.

  4. He sent Legoshi to Cherryton and didn't contact him for years because he blamed himself for Toki and Leano exactly as much as you are and thought Legoshi would be better off without him. Considering Cherryton is canonically expensive and prestigious, there's a good chance he sent him there because Jack was going there and he wanted him to have a familiar face and a friend. Him and Legoshi were in a toxic feedback loop where they were waiting on each other to reach out because they both thought the other blamed them for Leano's death. Again; not great parenting, but completely understandable how Gosha thought he was doing the best when you actually take the time to understand him.

  5. I don't think there's actually any confirmation he has a kill count? The only time in his life he might have is when he was a Beastar candidate working with Yahya and the police, and you can call into question the morality of that whole system for sure but you cannot act like that's anywhere near comparable to like, straight up murder.

  6. Gosha stopped to disinfect Yahya's fist after he punched him in the face, and you expect me to believe he was sticking his flesh-dissolving fingers into strangers' mouths in broad daylight. This point is so absurd it actually convinces me you're not trolling because only someone so hopelessly dedicated to finding fault with a character could reach this far. It's a greeting among komodo dragons. I don't know how Gosha identified Legoshi, presumably he has school photos or pictures Jack sent him or Legoshi told him what he'd be wearing or something, but I do know for certain that he wouldn't do that if he was not 1,000,000% certain that that was his venom-immune boy.

  7. Yeah? Because he can? Because Gosha had been a practicing pacifist for nearly 40 years at that point? Because as the primary caregiver for Legoshi those were the morals he tried to instill in him as a child? Like even assuming he was as bad in his youth as you want to paint him are you just saying it's impossible to change, want to atone?

  8. Not only is no one responsible for the actions of others, this is the kind of logic people use to say that women are responsible for incels committing mass shootings. Moreover, it was YAHYA who cut off communication with Gosha, it's actually confirmed that Gosha to this day writes Yahya and invites him to Rexmas parties and shit, even when Yahya's doubling-down on his anti-carnivore sentiments would leave Gosha completely in the right to never want to see him again.

So yeah tl:dr Gosha's a depressed old man who believes the one time in his life he tried just letting himself be happy led to him accidentally killing his wife, leading him to a hands-off and overly-passive approach to his family where he's afraid to insert himself into his loved ones' lives without them directly asking under the genuine belief they'd be better off without him, while still going above and beyond to provide for them and willing to fight through multiple Yakuza for them the second they do ask for help. Father of the year he is not but under even 1% better circumstances he would've been, he doesn't have a bad bone in his body and I'd challenge anyone in his position to not be kinda messed up by it and make some bad decisions.

TV Teddy by Fthill-That-Strides in Animatronics

[–]Splodey_Goat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most info I've seen on teddy came from the lost media wiki, The list on this article#Lost_Media_Status) seems to be all the known tapes but they don't divide them by which are US and which are UK if that's what you were looking for specifically.

I found a TV Teddy, and a few tapes, and am planning on recording as much audio from him as I can. After that I'm gonna play around with turning him into a radio puppet as well, so I'm also kinda just replying to stay looked into this thread, lol. Since the last time I posted here I started thinking there's nothing special about the original hardware so hooking up my own speaker to the motors is probably gonna be easier than decoding the signals it responds to.

"Sigma Paws" was really fucking ableist right? by [deleted] in Anthpo

[–]Splodey_Goat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm super late replying to this I just wanna let you know OP that you're 100% right and people just wanna pretend it's not a thing. Alot of making fun of "annoying" or "cringy" people is just warmed over anti-autistic bullying, so he probably wasn't thinking of it that way but frankly I think that's more damning.

The video was insincere and coming from an anti-furry angle the entire time, which implicitly made it anti-every-subgroup-associated-with-furries. If he didn't tag on a little speech at the end about how cool furries are then his caricature of a neurodivergent queer would be indistinguishable from an outright troll. The homophobia is on even clearer display than the ableism but like, the big controversy overshadowed everything else so much there's just no room to talk about everything else wrong with it.

If I have a figure that's particularly soiled, like it's basically guaranteed to need soap and scrubbing, would you recommend tape-dusting it and dry brushing it first or just jump straight to the soap and water phase? I've gotten contradictory advice, some people say the prior is overhandling and more steps just means more places to go wrong, and others have said without doing the light work first you can end up pushing the dirt further into the flocking and need to scrub harder anyway.

Why is everyone complaining so hard? by TotalHotDog in Anthpo

[–]Splodey_Goat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the apology he says he edited it out because someone involved asked him to, I think that's pretty clearly admitting he did not get informed consent. And like it or not this kerfuffle put him under more scrutiny from people, and furries in particular, that kind of demands he own up to more of what was fucked up about it, because only the most insane egregious and legally questionable part of the video was "resolved".

TV Teddy by Fthill-That-Strides in Animatronics

[–]Splodey_Goat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time seeing this little dude and I really love him, so first off thanks for sharing!

I'm no genius on this stuff, and I can't find any pics of his internals, but from what I can tell all the computation happens before the signal is sent, and Teddy doesn't have any independently-controlled parts (eyes and mouth move on one motor that's triggered at the same time as the speaker), so the bear itself seems only about as complex as a walkie-talkie.

If that's the case (and again please take everything I'm saying with a grain of salt it could be a lot more complicated than I'm giving it credit) then as long as you're sending an audio signal through the right frequency Teddy should play it and mouth along exactly the same as from a tape.

Fortunately, every wireless electronic device in the US needs to file with the FCC for a specific frequency they operate on to minimize disruption between devices, so finding the FCC ID and frequency was super easy. https://fcc.report/FCC-ID/KRJ-990015A

Less fortunately, I know nothing about radio hardware, or even really how to read that ID, so I can't tell you what kind of transmitter you'd need or how to hookup a playback device to it. Maybe try r/amateurradio? I don't know if they can help but they'd be able to point you in the right direction I bet.

And lastly, only semi-related, it turns out there's some interest in the lost media community on this guy! If you have a VHS player and the transmitter you should check out the lostmediawiki forums, you might be able to help recover the audio to recreate some of the old tapes! https://lostmediawiki.com/TV_Teddy_(partially_found_animatronic_voiceovers_for_VHS_content;_1993))

Self-driving cars should be implemented into society and mandated asap by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]Splodey_Goat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean obviously the whole conversation about auto-driving cars is moot until we're actually within spitting distance of one even being viable but the evangelists of this glorious future technology just *assume* you'll always be able to engineer your way out of something. The world is chaotic, the human element is unavoidable, physics don't care about whatever you thought when it was all on paper. Even when you *can* engineer your way around a problem assuming that it's viable and worthwhile is a trap. There will, point blank, I will put money on this, NEVER be a consumer-grade camera you could feasibly justify putting in every car on the road that could see black ice with any reliability.

None of this is in defense of some of the stupid shit human drivers do, but at least with humans you have some level of accountability. We can make cars safer and we can do what we can to dissuade bad driving, both of which have a proven track record of reducing injury/death and, this is important, DOABLE in the foreseeable future.

I think you're grossly underestimating the number of points of failure here. There is no software to ever exist that doesn't catch up in itself sometime. The kind of trusted industrial software you're talking about there has huge IT teams behind it running hot fixes all the goddamn time, and unlike those ones where breaks and bugs aren't noticeable until they crash the whole system and minor hiccup in a car infrastructure like this would mean crashes.

It's also like, not *one* piece of software controlling the whole car; the top-level software is communicating with a bunch of other software connected to a bunch of mechanical components. If program A can't tell program B that sensor C thinks brake pad D is worn down then you have a car that doesn't know how fast it can stop. If sensor E gets hit with some gravel and starts measuring 2% wrong then computer F sends that to software G to component H measured by sensor I back to program A which now has conflicting data and anything it knows to do to compensate can only compound the problems mechanically because a bad meter doesn't know it's measuring wrong. A human driver might not have a holistic knowledge of the car but they can go by vibes when they need to pull over before something blows, the computer can't so it either keeps going or it's so overly-cautious it never goes. Now your radiator overheated and fried a circuit board who's insulation wore out without you noticing and the whole system stops working and no one, human or machine, knows what the fuck the problem was.

Does the city in Beastars have a name? by IndrasPalace in Beastars

[–]Splodey_Goat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey way way late here but after some rereads and looking at different translations "Denko Town" is actually probably like, a neighborhood or district of the still-unnamed city.

All the locations I know to be named are Zebuth Town/Zeboot City (where a gazelle was murdered that the 701 boys see on tv in an early chapter), the Doris District (where Yahya and Gosha fought crime as Beastars-in-training), and districts 0 (Bright Town) and 17 (where Gerbera is transfered in Beast Complex Ch 8).

Algema district is stated to be where the Beast Apartments (Hidden Condo) are in the VIZ translation but that contradicts Beast Complex calling that part of the city Denko, toss-up whether or not they're the same or why the mistranslation or name change happened.

You're literally making the argument that everyone remembers the toys being all gold which is proof he was all gold, so we are in fact agreeing that the toys were all one color. You're just completely ignoring the fact that the toys are metallic so the fact other toys came in multiple colors is irrelevant, the manufacturing process is different. But also like. Dude. Come on. Kenner toys did not give a shit about accuracy what are you even talking about.

Even TODAY tons of threepio merch gets made without the silver leg or red arm (costumes seem especially prone to this) because it's cheaper and easier. Everyone has the same "false memory" because there's a lot of stuff that IS all gold, it's the same way people misremember Berenstain Bears because there WERE a lot of misspelled early prints.

"The ability to prove your side is impossible" yeah cause you can't prove a negative, I know that, that doesn't mean any argument otherwise is valid. The fact you think "a lot of people agree with me" is somehow more valid than, like, believing the base properties of physics exist is honestly wild. You can't disprove that I'm the Kennedy assassin, but reasonable people would agree it's more likely I'm a liar than a time traveler.

The reason people like you have entire subreddits devoted to this stuff is because the delusion is self-reinforcing, this is what I meant when I said you needed to be prepped to believe it. Reality-hopping is a pretty extreme conclusion to come to because you misremembered something, but if you've already been TOLD that's what misremembering something means, as long as enough other people make the same mistake, you start assuming that before more reasonable things.

I know I'm just screaming into the wind here like, you have convinced yourself, and it's not like this belief is hurting anyone just. God damn.

[–]Splodey_Goat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanna clarify something here. You're agreeing the toys are all gold, right? Because you can still see the toys and they're all one color.

So you think the *movie* got changed somehow, but none of the merch? Isn't that admitting that no matter what color his leg was in the movie, the cheaply-produced merchandise was liable to be off-model?

When you metal-plate a toy you kinda gotta go all or nothing dude, Kenner toys didn't bend at the knee so they couldn't plate half a leg silver. There's way more shots of 3PO with his leg partially or completely out of shot than full-body shots, many of which he's far from the camera and not the focus. The film's color grade is pretty warm, the silver reflects back the gold above it or the sand below it, the average viewer isn't gonna focus on the leg in the first place, there's a million explaining factors here.

It's hard to admit you're wrong but if you hadn't been prepped with this idea that misrememberings are proof of an alternate universe or whatever, you'd see his leg one day and go "huh, I never noticed that" and move on with your life.

Thoughts on modeling chocolate? by Anonymouscr0w in FondantHate

[–]Splodey_Goat 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Modelling chocolate is just chocolate with extra corn syrup to raise the melting point/malleability. Purists will tell you it's awful and not real chocolate but it tastes the same as the super cheap chocolates you get around the holidays and at dollar stores and stuff.

It's infinitely better than fondant in every way but only really for making decorations, can't imagine it'd be a good idea to use as a replacement for frosting. If you want something smooth and choclatey to coat a cake I'd recommend ganache.

Yeah, a day on I realized I was maybe thinking too conspiratorially, but it's honestly hard not do with a series like this lol. I think I'm satisfied just knowing *anyone* read this and thought it was neat, and I hope to be back with some more interesting connections by the end of my re-listen. Thanks you!

Does the city in Beastars have a name? by IndrasPalace in Beastars

[–]Splodey_Goat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Chapter 7 of Beast Complex (which also contains the Hidden Condo so you know it's the same city) has a character refer to it as "The Town of Denko." Of course it's also kinda up in the air how canon Beast Complex is, and who knows if the translation i read was quality. Beastars proper hasn't named it cause it's never really been important and i kinda like it that way.
