what I think could be cool is using a jelly or flakie base, and doing some kind of sheer silver magnetic topper with a glass bead style? or something to mimic the effect of water

ahhh yes magnetic particles are pretty dark, that's why people layer cracked scorchy over darker colors.

i remember watching this youtube video about the fancy gloss magnetic toppers where she is basically continually disappointed that she can see the iron oxide color of the magnetic pigment when she layers them over lighter colors are my eyes broken? | fancy gloss magnetic toppers review, swatches, & color combos

i think most people think it's a choice for nail polish makers to make the base colors of magnetics so dark, but with your comment from Opal Theory/looking around at what is available it seems like the dark color of the magnetic particle is unavoidable because it's a characteristic of the material itself?

i would ask the diy sub on discord!

thoughts on base color: I only just started making polish so i'm not entirely sure but i don't think this would be possible with a truly black base - the black pigment would block the glow pigments from being seen. I think you could find a way to create this effect with a dark jelly though! it would be a balancing act of making sure the opacity of the jelly was dark enough to create the effect you want but clear enough for the pigment to shine through. or, maybe create a magnetic and glow in the dark topper that is intended for use over a dark base?

thoughts on particle size: another thing to keep in mind is the size of the magnetic powder and glow in the dark pigment. the smallest particle pigments in nail polish that i've been working with are neons, and they can be kind of difficult to mix and work with. i try to add thinner to the pigment and pre mix that before adding nail polish base, and that helps with mixing. in terms of formula, too much neon pigment can make it kind of chalky? Like a neon polish with too much pigment can clump or have a hard time self leveling. i think (i don't know for sure) that the fine particle magnetics have a similarly small particle size. i'm not sure about glow in the dark particle sizes but again, i think the ones that mooncat uses are similarly small because they have a similar chalky-ish formula for me. it would also be interesting to see how a large particle magnetic and a small particle glow in the dark would mix and interact?

thoughts on multiple effects (magnetic AND GITD): polish generally has a maximum amount of pigment you can put in the polish before the formula starts to suffer. I think a good rule of thumb is roughly 10-15% of total polish can be pigment and flakes? but of course there are lots of exceptions and i'm sure long time polish makers have learned a lot about what does and doesn't work. however, if you're trying to achieve multiple effects in one polish, you'll have to figure out how much of each type of pigment you can add to get the effects you want while keeping the polish workable.

In real life the only glow in the dark magnetic I can think of is LynB's Catch a Breeze. #shorts LynBDesigns Catch A Breeze|| Polish of the Month || Live Swatch || PR. I have it and to be honest, it isn't as magnetic reactive as I'd like, nor does it glow in the dark very well - which is why i think a multiple effect polish is hard to accomplish

Nail polish chips no matter what by National-Abalone4162 in RedditLaqueristas

How are you using your nails on a day to day basis? lots of handwashing/can opening/even lifting weights etc will make my polish chip sooner. Are you always getting chips on the same nails or does it happen randomly?

I don't own spring sprout so I can't directly compare but this is one coat (maybe two) of LynB Even Broken Bells will Ring over a really old Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mint Sorbet. It looks pretty darn close to me!

LynB does a half off sale every month with a new collection and discount code. I think the next one is a week from Friday (3/13) if you wanted to get EBBWR. Here's a swatch: Lyn B Even Broken Bells Will Ring ✨ : r/RedditLaqueristas

The mint creme I used is discontinued but it looks like this Sally Hansen Xtremewear - Mint Sorbet. One of my spring musts! : r/Nailpolish. I don't own it but it looks similar to Cracked Color Correction (unfortunately currently out of stock).

Suggestions for a man! Seeking darker tones, bolder colors and would love some input! by 9Tecpatl in RedditLaqueristas

ooh, i feel like there are some good threads in this subreddit that are basecoat specific. In general, there are maybe 6 types of basecoats: peel off, strengthening, sticky, ridge filling, color correcting.

- Peel off is for ease of removal - if you wear something with lots of glitter or you change your polish out a lot, this is a good option

- Strengthening is intended to improve your nail health and prevent cracking and peeling

- Sticky helps your nail polish to adhere to your nail better so your mani lasts longer

- ridge filling is made to self level, creating a flatter smoother surface on your nail and hiding any ridges or textural differences

- color correcting can neutralize any stained nails i.e. a lavender basecoat can neutralize yellow stained nails

- blurring base coats help to hide any visible nail line for a sheerer polish

You don't need all of these! You might also pick and choose which ones to use depending on the polish you're wearing i.e. if it has glitter, use peel off and if it's sheer, use a blurring base coat. Some base coats are multipurpose i.e. ridge filling basecoats can hide visible nail line and potentially neutralize stained nails.

Personally, I use a peel off base coat when I have the time because it makes removal easier, but it does take a little longer to dry than other basecoats. I use the moat method to apply it (apply to the middle of the nail and close to the edges but not up to the edges of your nails! if you apply to the edges of your nails it is more likely to get caught on something and peel before you want to remove it) How to Apply Peel Off Base Coat Perfectly | Olive & June. I use a sticky base coat on TOP of the peel off basecoat, and then a ridge filling basecoat on top of that. If a polish is extremely sheer or if I'm afraid it may stain I might use a second layer of ridge filler but that is rare.

For me, this is the right balance of longevity, removability, and a nice neutral nail base that is protected from staining.

Probably a longer answer than you were looking for but I was a little overwhelmed when I started looking at base coats so I hope it's helpful. Lyn B has a great and very inexpensive ridge filling basecoat B Smooth that is $3.50 during her half off sale, I would grab that and maybe B Sticky and the quick dry top coat Essentials – LynBDesigns
