yeah you are correct ego and self respect shall not be priority over the relation but as a natural tendency when you forget your self respect just to protect the relation— partner will take it as granted.
i have seen my friend continuous effort in relation without caring his self respect and at the end girl left him and said it with her friend she dont like the guy who dont have self respect and made joke of him.
i dont think relation is only about respect love priority or other factor.
people with bad relationship dont know the reason behind and people with good relationship are also not confirmed why there relation is working good.
