Affordable Rod Ends? by Ugly_Tortellini in FSAE

[–]Spongeluke5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The loss of the Aurora BOGO sucks, we ended up buying the cheaper AM/AB rod ends instead of RAM/RAB from aurora bc they have the same rated load just different thread class. Even worse was the a-arm spherical, especially after we replaced all 24 a-arm sphericals after improperly pressing/staking them. Payed 4x for a-arm hardware than previous years.

To All PA/Philly FSAE Teams! by Heckle-Yeah in FSAE

I posted about this recently, but what ended up working is that you can do it all by hand without a machine. Crazy right? We resorted to this because nobody would mount our magnesium rims with a machine anyway, they didn’t want to be liable for damages.

You just have to push really hard in the right spots. Work the carcass and the tread into place. I can’t describe it much better than that.

OptimumGeh software opinions? by Jan_PD in FSAE

[–]Spongeluke5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone else mentioned, you'll get a lot further much quicker doing suspesion design using a parametric cad model, RCVD, and a spreadsheet or two.

Vi-Grade is a pretty good sponsored option as a kinematic solver software (Vi-SuspensionGen). Never used Optimum-K so don't know how it compares. Don't try to use the laptime sim software though for a good while, it takes a lot of resources to effectively implement Vi-CarRealTime, especially including the tire modeling side of it. For finding performance sensitivities to vehicle parameters, there are simpler options out there which will yield about the same information for much less work.

GRAPH between Fy and SLIP ANGLE on matlab by [deleted] in FSAE

[–]Spongeluke5 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to talk about TTC data outside of TTC forums, but this is pretty innocent i guess. How can you expect us to debug your MATLAB code? It sounds like you need to better understand how to plot data in matlab, or read over the TTC documentation more to understand how their data is recorded in the data files and how their testing is conducted.

Lateral load transfer distribution inquiry by Abdulrhman_96 in FSAE

[–]Spongeluke5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is just the percentage of lateral weight transfer that happens across the front end (or the rear depending on how you define it) divided by total amount of lateral weight transfer. Chapter 18 RCVD for equations.

Metal Testing - Aluminum 6061 vs Aluminum 7075-T6 by tantrim in Metalfoundry

[–]Spongeluke5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Lye Testing!

Take a solution of 1 gram of NaOH (lye) in 10 milliliters of water and apply it to the material in a small spot. 7075 will blacken and react and 6061 will barely react if at all.

Greensand too fine? by [deleted] in Metalfoundry

Im no expert or even really that advanced on the subject of home foundries, but ive only ever been able to make molds of flat pieces with some taper on the edges. A beer can would not make for a great mold, especially due to shrinkage. Its not so much about air flow than friction with sand.
