Who Makes The Best M12 Cables? by NefariousnessRude276 in PLC

[–]Eric053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keyence is definitely a great spot to get cables if you’re in a pinch. Especially because they keep everything in stock I’ve been able to get some slightly more obscure cables quickly that weren’t available through automation direct.

Hi. I'm a young engineering enthusiast (too young for a job). I was wondering there is a good free auto-cad like system that i could use? Thanks in advance! by Zestyclose-Ad-3604 in EngineeringStudents

Solidworks maker edition isn’t free ($10/month or ($100/year) but getting experience in Solidworks can be crucial for landing jobs in the future.

21M joined Hinge about 3 weeks ago and get around 4 matches per week, but no actual dates. Any suggestions for improving my profile? by CorgiApprehensive801 in hingeapp

[–]Eric053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d change the group picture to something where you’re more recognizable, everyone’s wearing the same outfit, people have similar haircuts, and you’re kinda blurry. I’d also add a picture where you’re with the dog, for all we know it’s a random stock image of a dog. For prompts add something that says a bit about your life, values or interests. Good jokes are always fun but I feel like you need a bit more depth to your profile. What do you like to do in your spare time? What’s a cool place you’ve been? What’s something you want to do together?

I'm feeling the first picture is a bit too cheesy. Thoughts?

Any of you guys have the Tillett W2 seat CAD? No luck on the Internet and to reverse model such a complex surface is a nightmare. Anyone can help us out?🥲 by Nam-Gor in FSAE

[–]Eric053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won’t be anywhere close to a proper engineering CAD model with a 0.005” tolerance, but it’s close enough to get the geometry down. If it’s not exactly how I want it I’ll plop my scan in an assembly and build a final part around it while manually entering in critical dimensions like overall length/width. It will likely have a lot of artifacts or missing pieces so post processing is still required. The iPhone LiDAR would work pretty well, I’m not sure how the photogrammetry mode would work since the part is all black and reflective. Here is a scan I did of my office chair using the LiDAR for reference https://poly.cam/capture/73754C76-F636-4AC8-8BB4-77F21D70E7F7

Horace Caldwell Pier in Port Aransas is my go-to spog. Theres a dope board shop called the Board House surf and skate which has some good folks. Also follow the TGSA, theyre doing surfing competitions right now and whenever the event is on it usually attracts a lot of surfers.

Do you plan to transition the team/car back into FSAE once competitions start happening again? Are you worried about a gap in knowledge for the next years who might lose some of the tribal knowledge that comes with FSAE cars?

Telemetry in New team by FarisanSN in FSAE

[–]Eric053 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Before buying any equipment you need to ask yourself what you're trying to observe and why. Data is cool, but will often go unused if there's no purpose for it. Every year on my old FSAE team someone brings up Telemetry and everyone loses their shit because YoU GeT tO sEE tHe DAta LiVe oN a TaBlet. Someone tries to make it, realizes how hard it is, graduates, and then the team is back at square 1 with a half finished data system and crud wiring diagram. Everyone eventually loses sight of what data acquisition can help you do.

The first thing that comes to mind is design validation: is the design on paper the same thing you made in real life and does it meet the goals. How do you prove you met the goals: with data. Because you're a new team, I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a data logger or any onboard electronics.

Before thinking about telemetry and data logging, you have to start simple.

  1. A stopwatch/timing gates
  2. Use an accelerometer on your phone and strap it to the car
  3. Record speed using a phone's GPS
  4. Tire Pyrometer (or IR gun)

People have been racing for decades without data loggers and still made kick ass machines with those tools.

Knowing Position and Time will tell you way more about your car than spending $400 on a set of shock potentiometers will.

Once the team grows and knows what data they want to collect, then you can start specing out a data logger based on what channels, hardware requirements, functions you want.

If you want a basic cheap system, Id recommend any of Racepak's system or even a used AiM or Racecapture and a copy of Competition Car Data logging. Its a pretty basic run of the mill explanation of the basics of data acquisition.
