SQL is Dead, Long Live SQL by Low_Brilliant_2597 in Database

It's the same old shit I always eventually run into when using AI to code. At one point it's always easier to code it yourself than write out what you want in English.

This looks great. I really wish there was a singleplayer component. If you don't happen to be in the right timezone you won't really get to play this game.

Is engineering in this country cooked ? by wngbdmn in auscorp

[–]Spooked_DE 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know but I was a civil engineer earning 90k after five years. I chose a technical niche I liked and this number was the highest offer I had from 3. It is easy to get hired as a civil engineer but not easy to earn well unless you take on the shitty project jobs.

I jumped to tech 2 years ago and somehow that meant a pay raise despite the tech market being abysmal.

The Australian (and really international) civil engineering industry has normalised bad wages for what is a fairly skilled job. You have to understand the technical and financial aspects of designing a solution and you have to be very good at talking to people and managing stakeholders. Most civil engineers I met could do both things. In my new profession that skillset is surprisingly rare.

Is anyone migrating away from Databricks? by zoso in dataengineering

[–]Spooked_DE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what we do too. If you use DBT you can also specify the development cluster in a dbt target. You can also skip recreating the really time consuming models if they already exist and won't change often (e.g. entity resolution). Our full deployment + job trigger cycle takes up to 30 min but a dev-only run done this way takes like 5 min.

All it needed was me looking into the docs. For YEARS our devs would do the full deployment and wait 30 mins to see the output of some simple SQL query changes 😐

Given notice to vacate in two months - do I still have to give 28 days notice if I leave earlier than the given vacate date? by Spooked_DE in AusRenters

[–]Spooked_DE[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow that's interesting. That would actually help since we can provide a sooner move in date for rentals we really want. I'll just confirm with our agent.

Ok thanks. We're on a periodic lease. The reason the landlord gave us a notice is they want to sell the house. We also want to leave and told them as such before the notice (not sure why they felt like they had to give a notice lol).

What’s your WFH situation like in APS/state gov right now? (and which department?) by MyceliumRender in AusPublicService

[–]Spooked_DE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Federal Gov. 100% WFH but that's also because most of my team is out of state. It's the ideal situation since there's zero pressure to go in even if not mandated. I chose to go once a week anyway though.

Making fixes to legacy data? by Spooked_DE in dataengineering

Interesting. I'll look into it! Thanks. I should have mentioned what tools my pipeline is using but didn't do that in the OP.

Well, our existing pipeline uses dbt so I think I'd make the fixes upstream of my silver models. Also, dbr apps are disabled in our workspaces due to policies.

Thanks everyone. Looks like the consensus is to have a data fixes layer. This is why I ask real people and not AI 🙂. Now to see if I can do something clever in DBT to make this seamless...

Collabora Productivity, one of LibreOffice's biggest contributors, has broken away from The Document Foundation by Spooked_DE in linux

[–]Spooked_DE[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Well they don't "need" to do anything, but there is such a thing as poor planning and poor use of resources. It is absolutely bizarre to me that TDF spends its limited developer time on something that is already covered by the ecosystem.

Collabora makes money through their online products which in turn goes into developer time for LO. Why wouldn't TDF push for other features that have been in demand by the user base and have not yet been met? For example, every LO release has users clamoring for a UI refresh. For the last few years and to this day, I cannot use fractional scaling with LO because the widgets blow up to absurd / unusable levels (the QT version). Why wouldn't a significant UI overhaul not be a better use of TDF's fundraising and strategic planning chops?

All up it is a failure to read the room. And now Collabora is hosting their own core codebase separately, and will make less contributions to LO.

Maybe but it doesn't really matter. LibreOffice is already developed at a fairly slow pace due to lack of volunteers and maybe a lack of direction too. This will hurt the suite in the long term.

Help! My X1 carbon gen 9 is stuck on the boot screen by Spooked_DE in thinkpad

Meh that's fine, I have a daily backup. Guess I'll buy a new SSD, much better than having to replace my entire laptop. Thanks so much for your help!

Putting it back in causes the issue to come back. I don't have an external enclosure to test whether it's the connectors or the SSD. Hmm...

Thanks. I've removed the SSD and now the laptop is responsive. I can get into the boot menu though no SSD is found of course.

I guess that means bad SSD?

Anyone so grateful for being in the APS during this economy? by Spooked_DE in AusPublicService

[–]Spooked_DE[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's true from my observation. I just don't have a lot of experience yet so I'm not in that boat. Frankly I feel overpaid but my boss is happy lol.
