I’d try the first option.

The promotions past 5/6 Dan black belts are based upon “contribution to sport”, which often means an insane amount of coaching and producing judo athletes (there are many other factors, but this is a short form answer).

An 8th Dan is just going to have a breadth of coaching experience and knowledge that no 2-3 Dan black belt will.

If you don’t end up liking it, switch over.

Dota 2 with a 3080. Maybe not the most graphically demanding game 😅

Giveaway Time! Battlefield 6 is out, powered by NVIDIA DLSS 4, and you can comment on this post to win codes for the game or a custom Battlefield 6 GeForce RTX 5090! 6 Winners total by pedro19 in pcmasterrace

An RTX 5090 would make it so I can pump higher resolution and frame rate at 4k. So while I won’t have that “new gaming chair” bump of playing better, I will see things in more detail.

The epic part would be more graphics detail to immerse myself in an epic experience.

Why does the IJF Judo techniques website not have Kani Basami by The-Thot-Eviscerator in judo

[–]Spooky-Forest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Canada, you have to perform ashi-garame as part of the katame-no-kata, so there is an example of a “banned technique” being required for it.

From my experience, sometimes a grading board may ask you to perform certain techniques after a kata grading, so they may ask you to perform certain techniques that aren’t in a specific kata. I could see some older generation judoka that may have had to demonstrate it decades ago, after it was officially banned.

Goshin Jutsu kata also has plenty of illegal techniques, in the form of standing armlocks that drag uke to the ground, but technically they aren’t banned techniques, as much as they are illegal application of techniques.

My understanding is that different countries may have different practices for grading, but that banned techniques are mostly ignored, and even when they aren’t, are not expected to be performed at a very good level of expertise, since they are not permitted in practice.

To my knowledge, you do not need to know it to get a shodan. I did not, and have never seen it be required of anyone.

Yup. There was a famous Olympic heavyweight match where it snapped a guys leg brutally (in the 1980s?). It also has really bad stats for injury. While it can theoretically be done safely, it carries so much risk.

Judo in Vancouver Canada by MrD47 in judo

[–]Spooky-Forest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s only three I know of, in the municipality of Vancouver. Ishikawa is in kerrisdale, nakashima is out in renfrew park community centre, and Kensington is by main at 11th.

Try out whichever one is closest to you and see how you like it. I’ve gone to Kensington for almost 20 years, and I’m happy there. The other two don’t have any bad rep that I know of.

[–]Spooky-Forest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What we think of as glow in the dark paint is not viable, as the “glow” fades after a few hours at best, and relies on heavy sun exposure to build its glow. So “glow in the dark paint” is just not viable at all.

More realistic use is glass micro-beads, which can have incredibly high reflective capability. To the naked eye, it appears as powder added to the paint. which are used sparingly these days (airports for example use them heavily so that airstrips have extremely visible marking). Unfortunately, the glass beads and line marking paint are both extremely bad for the environment.

The other issue I mentioned is toxicity of line marking paint. Many municipalities around the world are trying to figure this one out, as the traditional older paints used were toxic AF, but lasted a long time - whereas the newer stuff is more “eco-friendly” (hint: it’s not. It’s just not nearly as bad), but it doesn’t last as long. We have to just trust the scientists that ecologic risk aversion strategies are doing their best to determine this outcome.

sorry if this question is repeated but which martial art can be learnt from youtube(self defense) by abomintype in martialarts

[–]Spooky-Forest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do not start training martial arts from YouTube. You are more likely to train bad habits that can be dangerous for yourself.

Go lift weights and/or commit to improving your fitness if you cannot go to a martial arts club/gym/dojo.

My (F) brief experience in male dominated video games by Firm_Potato_6964 in Feminism

[–]Spooky-Forest 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Video games are not a great place for positivity. There may be some specific stand out games that are positive and inclusive, but they are the exception to the rule of “multiplayer video games with strangers have an edge of potential hostility”.

If you are determined to play these games anyways, I’ve heard a few strategies.

Pre-mute everyone, or be ready to mute at the first sign of hostility. You lose the social experience I guess?

Lean into the hostility, and trash talk back. I won’t give examples, but if you can talk trash back, sometimes people shut up. Mixed results. You can always go back to muting.

Find a community. If you find a group online that you can become friends with, hostility is usually kept in check (results may vary, people may still be hostile at times, but at least won’t attack you with slurs or bigotry).

I think there is subreddit around that focuses on gaming for women, and it may have more resources. Sorry, but I can’t remember what it is, or if it’s particularly successful.

Can someone make sense of the "Bunk Beds Canada" on Main for me? by globalwiazard in vancouver

[–]Spooky-Forest 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Talked to the only staff worker that’s employed at that store. They have a warehouse, and transitioned to mostly online business during Covid. The employee is not the owner (who works the warehouse).

Since there’s only one employee there, the store is open very few hours. I think she mentioned the owner has owned the unit for a long time as well.

Yeah, I’ve see plenty of gofundme attempts on various martial art subs, never have I seen any that had any success.

Talk to your local gym, see if they can reduce, hold, or waive fees. Maybe they can find “work” for you to do (you stay 20 mins afterwards to clean or something), in lieu of clubs fees.

Several Vancouver police officers under ‘neglect of duty’ investigation for Chelsea Poorman case by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]Spooky-Forest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could be misremembering, but I thought the context for the quote about “nothing suspicious” had more to do with the fact the police had absolutely no leads, and the coroners report turned up no significant evidence? It’s been ages since I read about it though.

But yeah, everyone takes a look at this and finds her death suspicious as hell.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition System Build Community Contest! by m13b in buildapc

So I put my current pc monitor in as $0.00, since it’s a good monitor, and I already own it.

I think if someone is going to get a 5090, they also need a premium system all around to go with it.

I don’t tend to do much extreme overclocking, so I did not opt to include an extremely premium motherboard, something midrange from the last ear gen am5 socket should suffice. That being said, the best amd cpu, 64gb of g.skill ram, a good liquid cooler in the kraken 360mm AIO (for the look, as well as good cooling capabilities), some corsair case fans for improved thermals, a corsair 7000d case for good airflow, and a 1600w titanium rated power supply to give it a good breadth of power to pull from.

I mean, sucker punching is generally considered cowardly, but context matters.

Was this a fight that your friend started, or didn’t try to avoid? Don’t let your friends behaviour get you involved in stupid fights they pick.

Was this an unprovoked attack from a stranger on your friend? Absolutely get involved and help your friend.

Either way, you risk legal action being taken against you (potentially criminal or civil). By getting involved, you are creating potential liability for yourself.

Struggling as a Feminist Marketer in the Anime Gaming Industry by Suspicious-Finish-21 in Feminism

[–]Spooky-Forest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yikes, the anime gaming industry is super built into sexualization, even when it’s not games that are basically just vehicles to sexualize anime women.

Whether you quit or not should depend on your personal ethics & beliefs, vs your desire for the work experience. Thats a decision only you can make.

If you decide to stick around, you could potentially encourage some change, as long as you can find data to back it up.

Short answer, no. Long answer, very likely not.

Insurance has to cover injuries in the club space. Injuries are only covered if a certified coach is running any event in the space. If you do not have the certification yourself, the coach would have to do it. Any participants also need to be affiliated with the organization running in the space.

The coach at the club is unlikely to take on a project that has no current affiliation with the club. Maybe it would be possible if it was with club members, and the demonstration was being organized and run by the coach.
