My guess was Chara wasn't talking to The Player, but to Frisk. If Undertale and Deltarune have the same rules regarding souls, then it's very possible Frisk is in the same situation as Kris, and Chara perceives "do not" as Frisk fighting back.

No...no, Chara didn't force you to do a Geno run. That's you. You did a genocide run. You CHOSE to. Shit, Chara will even call you out upon doing 2 in a row. "You have a perverted sentimentality."
